Ive done 4 2ZZ timing chain cover gaskets and all my customers have reported no more oil leaks. this is 100% the location of the leak. thats how confident i am.

Yes that's the IAC valve, where your two small coolant hoses go. I recognised it straight away coz I just split apart my whole throttle body this weekend and cleaned everything out for first time. I also hated those coolant hose clamps, struggled a bit to get my pliers in the space from above as they were angled away. Didn't realise I could have maybe gone up from underneath lol. My first thought was to change them out for worm drive clamps as well but I only had one in my toolbox. Will have to keep an eye on them in case they start leaking now I've disturbed them. Thanks for showing this video, I've been doing oil changes for years but now teaching myself some more advanced maintenance, need to tackle some oil leaks on my 1ZZ-FE. I'll start with tensioner o-ring and valve cover gaskets. Wouldn't have a clue how to remove an engine but I'm getting more confident and videos like yours help make it all seem less daunting if that's what I have to do. Cheers again.

Thanks for this video it really helped me out. I had the same mysterious oil leak and I checked out KZread for info and your vids came up. So I took my 1999/2000 Celica to the repair shop two weeks ago and told them I wanted the timing cover gasket replaced. They replaced the gasket, crankshaft seal and water pump. The car has not leaked any oil since.

I get you on the torque specs. Just put in the bolts to the power steering pump on my 2zz and didn’t torque any of them. The timing cover raised itself up on the right side closer to the radiator side. When I installed the water pump it resolved the gap. Correct Torque and tight tight both work.

I've been watching your stuff a little out of order. lol- in this one you still have hope for the ebay radiator! at least now i know where not to get one, so thanks for that! also, at this point in time, you were not against using the screw type hose clamps. I'm now skeptical about them thanks to your newer vids... like, I'll still use them, just carefully. thanks for your contribution to helping us with diy projects!

lol yea I didn't notice that but actually funny story, that clamp just kept leaking ATF, I finally changed the hose and clamp to an OEM spring clamp and it fixed my leak. check my latest track preparation video for proof hahaha

Thank you. I was wondering where all the oil was coming from. I got oil everywhere. Even on the hood I guess from the belt throwing it everywhere. I do have a question if you could help me out. I got a 2001 celica gts. Whenever I am stopped then start to accelerate my oil light flashes. It also did over heat the other day too. I cleaned the oil screen inside the oil pan it had some of the old oil pan gasket inside. So I remade the oil pan gasket. New filter. New oil. Yet the oil light is still coming on. What I'm thinking now is that maybe it's the oil pump? So I was going to replace it but I can't find any videos on how to replace it. Can it be done with the engine still in the car? I asked a shop how much it would be and the said $700 and it would take 2 weeks. I only got $100 and my job is delivery so I haven't been working due to my car acting up. Any help is appreciated if you see this. Thank you.

It's not from the power steering pump being over tightened. It's the 3 way joint of the block/head/timing cover that is a natural seem where they all meet. A bead of ThreeBond 1184 laid in those seems (bottom end girddle too) before installing the cover/gasket will seal it for as long as that engine remains running. All Toyota engines leak from this spot...super common. Coming from a Toyota Shop Foreman & MDT. Done many...

@@2zzlowBut it looks like you’re in a full shop with a lift? Do you have to take the engine out to do this job? I’ve put in a new head on my 87’ BMW E30 but I think my girls friends car (2000 Celica) has this issue. So I think I can do this as long as the engine doesn’t have to come out. Oil all over the serpentine belt area and dripping. But doesn’t overheat. How did you diagnose this? Thanks for your reply and this video really helped. Thanks.

I need you as a neighbor lol. My 06 XRS is seeping like mad from the chain cover. Did the tensioner and valve cover a year ago which slowed things down but it's no doubt the cover at this point 120k. Never took my ride to a shop, always done my own work but that's a tight spot to be working in without pulling it and i just don't have the patience.

I’ve been trying to pick up a small sand blaster from harbor freight tools but at that point when I was putting my 2zz back together, I just wanted the damn thing running. The black XRS was my daily for the longest until my pressure plate broke. Video on that coming soon

I had a leak too. Got the tensioner O ring, timing chain gasket and main seal done while they had it apart. No issues now.

Yeah, once you've been doing it for a while you get the feel for it, spark plugs are so common when you've been wrenching for a while that you don't really need to torque them to spec. Drain plugs are another one. Damn, I have that leak also, I really didnt want to do all the seals with the engine in the car. I guess I have no choice, do you know if all the seals are the same for all the 2zz's? I was thinking of just ordering on line, all those part numbers you showed. I don't feel like getting bent over at my local stealership. What sealant did you use? Is it the toyota stuff? Can you help out with the part number. I'm running a ebay aluminum 2 core radiator now have over a year with it still running good, If it hasn't leaked yet I dont think it will leak or bust anytime soon. How was the fitmant with yours? I've got to say the one i got was a shitty fitment i had to bend some tabs and cut some stuff to get it to fit, I guess because its about twice as thick as the OEM rad, it was annoying to install but seems to run well.

Been changing spark plugs since I’ve owned a car for family members and friends with no issues ever coming back to me but the troll squad online just likes to call out the little flaws in someone’s video when they can’t even make one themselves. Pretty sure all the gaskets for the 2zz are the same and they don’t change by year or the vehicle it was in. The Toyota packing seal is a must, you can pick it up online for $10. The all aluminum radiator that I bought had lots of fitment issues. I had to cut a piece from my cars radiator support to properly fit the radiator nicely. Then the stock fans had issues bolting up to it. The radiator being much bigger made my stock fans closer to the intake manifold. Not sure if that’s going to affect it on the long run.

Have a similar leak on my 02 Celica // 2zz. Searching the internet left me with the notion that it was most likely the timing chain tensioner. But after seeing this, most likely the timing cover. Never pulled an engine before, my question is, can this job be done without pulling the engine? Can I jack up the engine via the oil pan safely with enough room to do this myself? Or am I better off taking this to a mechanic. Many thanks in advance.

Ive read online that people have done this with the engine inside the car. You just need to move the engine up and down to clear some of the longer bolts that would hit the frame.

question: removing the timing tension out and the cover would compromise the timing sequence with out touching the chain ?

na, just dont rotate the crank at all and you should be fine.

I have coolant getting into my oil, but compression on each cylinder is great. Is there a chance that coolant is leaking through that water pump gasket and into the timing chain cover?

You can crack something i assume. It doesn't need to be super tight. If you've worked on cars before you kinda get the hang as to what is tight.

Bro my oil light started to blink & then my engine started to sound like one of those prize wheels that u spin & my engine cut off😐 then I poured oil in it & it started to leak from the oil filter which was odd cuz I did a oil change like 2 weeks ago not even 200 miles on that oil & ik I hand tightened the oil filter on well. Anyways I towed the car home & I was afraid it might’ve been something worse. Thanks for the video!

it most likely sounds like the car was ran dry due to a loose oil filter but that's just my theory

00' Celica: Yup i have a leak around the steering pump. It's very hard to see where it is seeping from. Steering pump? Tensioner o ring? I cleaned it up really good and i can see it trickle down the steering pump housing.

@@tonflo1 I used Honda bond for my timing cover, valve cover and my sump. I smeared it on instead of beading it when installing the sump and now I have a tiny leak, gonna pull it off, clean it up and put a little extra. I have no leaks from the timing cover or valve cover gasket which is a good sign :)

Man, how hard would this be to do? Guys at the toyota dealership tell me I have a leak from the timing chain cover but I really don't trust those guys to work on my car. I have changed a clutch in a c60 myself before and was wondering if this is at the level.

If I can do it you can do it. I only have harbor freight tools and a small drive way in my back yard porch. It’s just requires a days worth of your time and patience

I have got a 2001 celica gts with absolutely no oil leaking or burning yet and I would like to keep it that way. can you suggest me how to take care of it? I just bought it 6 months ago and it's my first car.

Just keep an eye on things, if you ever notice a leak use UV dye and light etc. If its not broken, dont mess with it. It will eventually leak as seals degrade but until then i'd just keep up on oil changes, power steering fluid (read manual, it doesnt use normal PSF), trans fluid and engine coolant. Should be good after that. If this is a daily driver that you rely on for work, it is most wise to keep it stock and maintained. Its an older car, modding it to get unnoticeable gains is just going to eat up your finances. 02 GTS here, 260k mi, fun to work on and performs great still.

@@RajGadhiya Cool, sounds like you lucked out getting one stock, less worry about bad diy mods and such from prev owner. If you have a manual trans, the only mod that is actually noticeable and fun on a daily basis would be installing a short throw shifter. B&M Racing short throw is one of the tried and true ones out there, a couple others. Last bit of advice use search engine and run searches on newcelica.org forums, tons of great info to be found there, my username there is BobSaget feel free to hit me up anytime. Cheers

Btw, I disconnect those IACV coolant lines from the tb and loop them together. Only needed for the northern states.

Different block, iacv coolant lines aren’t necessary honestly. My 3mz swapped Celica has them looped

@@2zzlow the throttle plate is steel while the tb is aluminum. So in arctic like conditions, the tb can technically seize the throttle plate. So the coolant lines help thaw it out. But yeah, I have them looped on my 1NZFE and 2AR FXE

How much does it cost to have the timing cover fix? I thought it was the timing chain tensioner where the leak was. Someone also mentioned to change the pcv valve. I need to find the leak on my 2000 Toyota celica gts

100% it’s on the timing chain cover gasket. Every 2zz goes through this. I e already fixed 5 of these. Whatever a shop charges for the hour and parts. Idk

that i know of the Tensioner and some of the motor mount bolts will be an issue but can be removed by moving the engine up or down with a jack.

I have a leak but it's not so bad that it needs oil all the time. Only leaks when driving. Added AT 205 reseal, hopefully it fixes it.

Once you make it bullet proof it safe to run xrs close to red line it was built for that right

I'm losing about a quart of oil every 4k miles, maybe it's leaking? I hope it's not burning, I don't see any smoke coming from the exhaust. And I don't see any leaks on the ground. So maybe it is being slushed around the engine bay because I do see dirty black spots around my ac compressor and right cv axle.. Maybe that's what causes my serpentine belt to squeak sometimes in the morning.

Anyone complaining about the lack of torque wrench on spark plugs is a moron. Bring the plug snug, turn 1/8-1/4 further to engage the crush washer ;-)

How much leak is too much? My 05xrs leaks about a quart every 1000 miles or so. It has 240k miles and runs great. Just leaks oil

Do it mate its easy. This engine if is healthy go over 300k with good maintenance. You have 240k on original engine without issues and repairs?

@@DimoS... I bought this car new in may 2005. All I've ever done is basic maintenance. Nothing major. I did replace the clutch at around 180k miles. It's been leaking for a few years now. Just seems to be getting a little worse lately.
