This may be one of the most common issues I see with us humans and our dogs.
For some reason, allowing dogs and kids absolutely unlimited free rein and no boundaries is extremely popular right now.
It seems that anyone who says something to the extent of enforcing boundaries is automatically tossed into: “oh you punish your dogs all the time, you don’t believe in rewarding them”-one extreme or the other.
You’re either “pain-based or reward-based”.
But that’s simply not accurate. And it’s harming more human-dog relationships than it seems to be helping.
Behaviors and states of being have to have some sort of outline or they will melt into a pile of frantic mush.
Giving your dog boundaries (and fairly training them) are some of the most beneficial things you can do for them. And the kindest.
I can’t tell you how many people say their dog listens to one person in a relationship, but not the other. And 100% of the time, the person they listen to the LEAST is the person that babies them and doesn’t enforce boundaries the most.
100% of the time.
It is the person who thinks they are being kinder and more gentle. This is harming them and doing the opposite of your intention.
This does NOT mean you should go overboard and punish them left and right. This simply means that you should mean what you say and follow through with the dogs first language: tactile/physical/timing.
If you actually do this (combined with training them and reinforcing the things they do well), you will begin to see a more relaxed and happy dog who pushes your boundaries less and less.
