Kristen, I love your videos and your decor advice. I especially love that you keep them relatively short and get right to the point. Many miss that and just babble on. I love incorporating your ideas especially scale and balance. Thanks and keep those videos coming!

The same height point was so unknown. Now I can never be the same !

Like others here I’ve seen a lot of “common design mistakes” videos and they tend to repeat themselves (my rug’s too small, got it) but there are some genuinely original and slightly mind-blowing points in this one. I’ll make sure to vary the height of the objects in my living room and not expose the back of my sofa. Wouldn’t have thought of that. Thanks Kristen!

I always get paint samples but a painted room doesn't always look like what you'd expect from painting a small amount of a wall with the sample.

Painting tip- No way you can tell what the color is going to look like on a mustard or hot pink wall as the background. Also, to understand the true color of the paint, you need to prime the wall first if it is a dark wall like mustard or hot pink.

Helpful info, Kristen! As a non-decorator, I've recently been exploring a possibility I don't often hear about: custom area rugs. We have a budget friendly carpet shop that will create an area rug in any size - select something from their in-stock rolls of carpet, then they send it to be bound on the edges. This is a great way to go if you don't want wall-to-wall but want a large area covered. My living room rug is 11-1/2' x 18', so it goes under all the furniture. I have a small odd-shaped bedroom that I ordered a custom carpet for in an L shape.

I’ve seen so many decorating videos and this is the first time I’ve heard about paint samples first, levels, and decorating backs of sofas. Thanks!!

I buy white poster board from Dollar Tree and get samples of prospective paint colors. I always paint TWO coats on a quarter of the poster board for each color to get a true shade then place my large samples in various locations to observe them next to different elements in my home and at different lighting levels and different lighting types. I rarely make mistakes with this method.

I loved this video! I feel like videos like this are usually a bunch of stuff I’ve heard a million times, but this one had things I wasn’t sure about, like how big rugs should be. (How did you know I’ve been considering getting a rug for under our table, but didn’t know how big it should be??) I’d LOVE to see more educational videos like this!

When we first moved into our home, I drove the poor paint guy at Ace nuts! I ended up with, over a few weeks, eighteen little cans of Benjamin Moore paint. The colors I eventually chose are still, nine years later, working for me. Main color (lr, dr, halls, kitchen) is Beach Glass (warm/blue grey/turquoise, depending on the light of day). The main bedroom is Hidden Sanctuary (a beautiful soft mauve). Main bathroom “Dusk to Dawn”, a muted medium shade of lavender gray.

We're decorating a new home and I havent made most of these mistakes yet. I picked a color pallette before the house was finished and ordered neutral couches. After moving into our home, I've been so surprised. Our home has changed the color pallette slightly. I thought I would be using grays, blues and white. It turns out that our home wants, grays, browns and greens. We still use blue as an accent but it's much less and a much darker blue. So weird. I'm not a lover of the color green but it looks so good and when I've paired it with navy and green, it makes me happy. Moral of the story, dont plan a new home totally before moving in. It might look too deliberate and not quite right. Wait and let the lighting in your home and the feel of the rooms help you. You'll know when you know and when you do, the rooms unfold beautifully.

Another hidden storage item I rely on is a storage ottoman. I have several in my house.

We found a really homey, country painting of a farm and farm house. I used it as inspiration for the colors in our house! Our couch is a warm green, we have soft blue flowers, the kitchen has large muted yellow bowls on the counter... it has helped me to stay on track without having everything too matchy -matchy. I was going for homey and peaceful, colorful but not overly colorful. Feels like home!

We moved into our new house in December, two weeks before a three-month lockdown. The walls were covered in wood chip wallpaper and painted so badly with the cheapest white paint I've ever seen, so there was no way I would wait until I could pick up sample pots. I ended up just looking at Instagram pictures of the paint I liked the look of online and ordered. Thankfully the colours ended up being exactly what I wanted, but the stress of spending nearly 300 euro on paints you've never actually seen in person was insane 😂

I'm just here because i want to upgrade my houses in the Sims^^ Also, great video, walked away with a lot of cool tips, thank you!!

You are real good at this, Kristen! You know what you are talking about. You know to bring interesting visuals into it. You know how to convey your knowledge in an engaging way. You even know when to stop. You give valuable content in a fun way. If ever I needed an interior designer (and could afford one...) I'd be hiring you.

Great content! I have watched so many of your videos, but I still learnt more from this one. One of my mistakes as been holding onto loads of mismatched furniture which has been handed down to us. Not particularly family heirlooms that are special and you can work with either. Sometimes you just have to let these things go!

On one of your other videos, you went into further detail about groupings, like groups of three. I knew that you should have groups of three, but it just didn’t look right...BUT...you went into more detail! Thank you! Now I know what to do. (I’m trying to condense this, so it may not be coming out clear.) I put three items on my shelf...it wasn’t exciting! Then as you were talking it all made sense! I can put a few things together as one group, then move on to the second group. Wow! It doesn’t look boring and bare! Thank you! You are truly the best!!! John 3:16❤️

We have a nautical theme with blues and beiges with white trim throughout our home. Trying to pare down unnecessary chochkis so it’s more simplified.. loved your tips

Mamas, THANK YOU SO MUCH! I’m normally decent at decorating, but a lot has changed at my parents and I couldn’t understand what it is that was going on. There was no cohesion or common thread, this has made things so much easier.

Most helpful advice was to place different height furniture or objects. Thanks!

When I was painting my kitchen I bought 5 different paint samples and everybody was like ‚it’s just white paint...’ and I was like ‚no it’s not! They’re all different and I can’t decide which one I want’ 😂 finally I’ve got the best one. My brother bought the one he liked in the store and quess what it was awful on the wall so it made me buy those samples and do it right way haha 😂🙈 thanks Kristen, I’ve never been so picky with white paint until I watched your videos 🤣🤣🤣

Yes to samples, However, remember to block previous bold colors already on your walls because they affect the new paint colors. So, primer is a must to cover spots before you try your samples.

Kristen, you're awesome. Such great ideas and advice. I wish I had the first tip about a year ago when we bought our home. We went to Lowes only knowing we wanted green in our bedroom. Not an accent wall, ALL. GREEN. Anyway, we loved the Sherwin Williams color Prickly Pear in the store and bought a whole gallon right then. Fast forward several months and we have a bit of paint regret. It turned out the store lighting made this green seem more muted than it was. On our walls at home with regular home lighting, it's very much more yellow-based than it appeared at the store. Next time we'll take some samples!

I love using my living room rug as a reminder of my color palette.

Maybe it isn't "kosher" but I like an eclectic approach for home design. In my case, I've got a contemporary base in the large pieces like my sofa and TV cabinet, but I've added drapes suggestive of India, a console suggestive of Indonesia, a Japanese screen, a Mission bookcase, and lots of woven rattan. When I do-over my bedroom, though, I'll go for solid Japandi.

Love those tall baskets behind the white sofa!

Watched the entire video without a blink. Top quality advice. Literally went through painting the wall and not liking it afterwards. Had to repaint it and learned my lesson the hard way. Oh my, the paint color thing! I picked out 3 different gallons of "grey" paint without paint samples and put them on the walls. It turns out they were all just blue, the undertones were that heavy. What a disappointment! I used 2 of them in rooms other than the original intended rooms so they don't go to waste, and just sucked it up and left the paint in the 3rd room. Sooooo...I guess I have a cohesive theme of blue in my home, lol. I did finally choose the perfect greys for the 2 original rooms by wisening up and using paint samples 👍

This is only the second video I have seen bur perhaps you could make a video on interior design tips for renters. We don't alway get to control all aspects of the living space so I think many people would find it helpful.

I’m painting my house interior right now. Yes we watched a few samples and lived with them for as well or so. It made a difference. The one I wanted in the store is not what we picked! Definitely makes a big difference.
