During December 2021 This project appeared online from Doctor Volt:
create.arduino.cc/projecthub/...
It showed a almost full C64 kernel running on the tiny 8bit microcontoller including keyboard in and video out... The C64 was a 64kb machine whist the nano has just 2kb of RAM... There is noway this can work sourly? Lets Find Out.
A bit thanks to Dr Vol for this amazing project, He is noway endorsed or associated with us, but please show your support and visit his channel: / @doctorvolt

If I am not mistaken the Nano came out around 2008 or so? Although the ucontroller itself is much older. So technically bit more than 10 years.

This is very interesting… something that I might be able to do…. but I guest.. I’ll wait until the next video… thanks…

Many Thanks, yeah just need to get it working properly then we might be on to something, defiantly worth trying out !

I saw another video about c64 emulation on an arduino, very cool. I hope this can evolve even further! The more solutions there are to use a c64 the better! Maybe a microcontroller based c64 would be really cool. There are things like the colour maximite after all!

Well, I have plans if I can get it up and running! Looking at the documentation think we're going to hit some real limitations, so colours out for starters, it cant run C64 software, has no audio, I/0 support etc etc I think its cool and worth doing, but its not going to replace a real C64 or say an FPGA or Emulation method.

@@WiFiSheep That is definitely true. I think that it would be possible maybe on a different microcontroller platform or with some added components, but I do like the concept, very cool demo and even though you didn't get it 100% working in this video, it's still impressive that you managed with what you had!

Really interested to see what this can run, I know it will be small simple programs but I wonder how far this could go

I will do! But it may be a week or two, due to sponsors being off for Chinese New Year, etc

Can c64 run on an Arduino Uno?

  • @WiFiSheep

Yes it can as it’s the same cpu ( atmega 328p) and pinout as the Nano , but as shown it’s barely useable !

Ok .... yes .... i saw the video ...... i run all commodore machines and other retromachines with my raspberry pi0.... its good enought to run them .... arduino is too slow , the only thing is the tvout project with it ....

Excellent use of memory but that's the most worst circuit schematic I have ever seen! There are plenty of free circuit design tools available so there is no excuse for such a poor schematic. I had to guess which wires were connected and which were gnd or 5v 🤔 That 1K ressitor from 5V to composite out is not even needed and causes the nano to sink current through the diode!
