Both are more like Wolf 3D, still pretty impressive for the C64

Grey looks pretty cool. The other version might have looked better with different colours and a better sprite for the gun. I do like it that theres still people out there who are keeping these systems alive.

Never understood why they don't just flicker a bunch of vectors. Throw it on a passive matrix LCD screen and the blur would hide how limited it really is.

6502 doesn't have multiple or divide instructions. Only add or subtract. It's incredibly complex to perform any complex 3D math on such CPU. On top of that, line drawing wasn't fast enough due to the weird graphics memory layout. Basically, you can afford 20-40 lines on screen and FPS drops below 10.

@@yooyo3d Thanks for a great explanation. I'm even more impressed with the 3d engines that managed to work under these limits. That said, some version of the Doom RPG seems very doable? Whether limiting animation to walls only, under careful level design, or going full Sentinel and seeing how detailed 1-3fps allows. But I realize that neither one of these options are what people want from Doom on the C64.

There are a few on the Spectrum - there's even a recent full 3d 'Quake' game as well. Not as tricky as on the C64, although still amazing.
