    Heh, listening to this gave me a story concept as I was thinking over some of the lore that I knew. An imperial citizen on a world freshly annexed by the Tau, a lowly tailor, is disgusted by his people's willingness to forsake the empreror and the Imperium and fashions himself a Commissar uniform and leads the citizenry to revolt. He's barely a soldier, but learns quickly from what he sees, and is able to use what limited oratory to inflame the dying faith in the Emperor in the people so that the Tau have to beat back the gue'la who are threatening the peace. This launches years of guerrilla tactics, terrorist action, and finally the Imperial Guard arrive to retake the world from the Tau. Our Tailor is now a seasoned veteran but a pale imitation of a true commissar, and that is made all-too clear when he encounters actual guardsmen who take him very seriously, and he is directed toward a Lord Commissar. Our tailor does not lie, and in a private room confesses to what he thinks is a treasonous act, imitating an imperial officer. The commissar grills him, and has several of his guerrillas interrogated to get the measure of our tailor. The Lord Commissar is impressed a mere tailor managed to inspire civilians to action, is pleased with his zeal, and that he has not embarrassed the title of Commissar but he keeps these thoughts private. Instead, he tells the tailor that if he wishes forgiveness, he must earn it by finishing what he started. He is to keep up his role as Commissar with a company of soldiers to retake the city. After several weeks, our tailor manages to do the impossible. He does take the city, though at the cost of losing an arm to the guns of Tau fire warriors. He did not flinch, or flee, having seen the Lord Commissar's face whenever fear approached him. IF he had tarnished the role the Lord Commissar had imposed upon him, our tailor knew what would happen. He would be slowly tortured to death. He knew he wasn't expected to take the city, merely make a dent in its defenses. yet, he lived and the city was in the hands of the Imperium. The tailor expected it to be over, he returned to the Lord Commissar and offered his cap and laspistol, expecting admonishment and oaths to never play an imperial officer ever again. Instead, the Lord Commissar grinned and told him that he was to be made governor of the city and to oversee reconstruction and training of new PDF troops as a 'junior officer Commissar.' This was his punishment. through the tailor's many actions he had gained the respect of the men, and played the part well. However now if our tailor ever was to slack in the role he had so brazenly adopted, he would be executed and replaced. Let this be a lesson to those who would impersonate the role of a Commissar: duty ends on your termination.

    @@user_name_redacted I picked a tailor simply for the angle that this would-be commissar would come from as humble a source as I could imagine but you're right. And yes, I imagine an Inquisitor would be called in to judge the quality of the imposter's soul before dropping the bomb on him that he gets to live. However he'd undoubtedly get pushed to the Lord Commissar first and nearly piss himself from fear.

It'd be great to see a character who previously mocked him, staring in disbelief as the tailor is riding on the back of a tank/horse/running (idk) with a ceremonial sword in one hand, civilian slug gun in the other, charging an army of technologically advanced tau with a group of ragtag troops behind him lol

    My favorite Is Commisar Caiphas Cain. Love that series. Graduated bottom of his class except marksmanship. He was slightly cowardly and a CYA personality. All his acts of CYA and cowardice turns into unbridled bravery. He is considered on the imperial GOAT, but he knows he doesn’t deserve it. Great read and I recommend this series.

    Nonsense son, hold you head high, wipe your tears, the emperor watches you, allow him to protect you, let your prayers be heard by him an no more. Pick up your weapon and aim straight, they will feel my line before we give way. We are humans and you are a man. Don’t let that be less to their fowl gazes. Hold the line and never waver, for into the hell we march, but I hold no fear but happiness, for there may be an enemy in this battle or the battles to come that may vanquish me. But I will not let them or you break our line. Run hide, you can’t leave this planet, not without defeating yourself. Now son, soldier, child of the emperor. Stand fast, equip your bayonet, and.... now.... Charge!!!

    Cain suffers from Imposter Syndrome. He knows how afraid he always is when he carries out his heroics. He knows that he fights so hard, not for the glory of the Emperor, but just to stay alive another second; and because commisars are supposed to be without fear, he concludes that he is a coward. As Amberley points out, Cain is his own harshest critic.

    One of the major turning points in 40k was when Commissars started preaching the Imperial Creed to their charges rather than the Imperial Truth. Space Marines can afford to be aloof. The Guard don’t have that luxury. It’ll be interesting to see what happens with Yarrick and the other IG characters. 200 years have now passed in the 40k timeline and they can’t all be let off due to warpfuckery.

    You have very good points on both issues. There are characters in codices that have been dead for a long old while *cough cough Tyco* but it does strike me as odd. I can only hope that they will either bring in fresh blood or pass this off with Chem rejuves instead. Warp twaddle for every issue is not great. Its lazy.

    Really dig your videos, you put....the best way I can say it is this; some other channels can give me the facts, you give the facts & you put emotion into the reading. It makes it more immersive, I guess. On leadership, this style will make people do a job, but they will not do it gladly, and they will probably start plotting on how they can rid themselves of a Tyrant. I have found in my career that you can get people to do things better, and on time if you can get them to love you. One way to do that is basically; give out the job assignment, then NEVER bother them for the entire night. That and guilt trips, my Father was a Master of those. Make your people love you, make therm want to kill themselves if you say "you disappoint me". In that fashion, they'll conquer all in your name. P.S. ~ Starting at 22:52 where the Commissar shit-talks some servant of Chaos.....that speech was beautiful. The Commissar who said that knows how to inspire. Listening to it, I wanted to grab a plasma gun, give a war-cry and charge forward.

  • @baldermort

    @baldermort

    Aye, but the situation would have required the response old Rikard gave. You start hard and gain authority - then inspire later. When a unit runs again and again, you either disband it - or you take drastic action. But that is the grimdark. Leadership like that is not effective in the medium to long term, I totally agree. Better to get them to love you. Then tey do what you want without you even needing to ask. :) Thanks for listening, brother. :)

    @@baldermort it was. Made by fantasy flight games, before GW let their license expire with them. They made a bunch of 40k RPGs. One for the inquisition, another for deathwatch, a rogue trader one and if your feeling heretical, one that let's you be a servant of chaos, either a cultist or traitor astartes. Only war is for the imperial guard. It was very crunchy, but left enough room for roleplay. We went hard mode with it and made a penal regiment. Made our group feel like the A team though.
