From 1942 - 1944 my grandfather had to build bunkers on Guernsey Jernsey, Alderney and Sark as a Wehrmacht prisoner. He had been arrested as an opposition Wehrmacht officer. After that he was taken prisoner of war by the British because at the very end of the war the prisoners were also forced to fight for the Nazis. He always told me about the beauty of the islands and how they had to catch abalone and crabs to survive. Greetings from Germany

another great video showing how small scale local fishing will always be more sustainable than large scale. he fishes the same patch again and again and puts back what he doesnt need. we need more of this and less factory ships.

I finally got round to watching this for a second time. A seriously informative video! The biggest green sand eel I ever saw was caught by a young girl feathering for mackerel of the north coast of Scotland. It measured 18 inches long! I later read in the observers book of fishes that the British record was about that size. Amazing to see a boat that size well enough laid out to be worked single handed! Thank you, Jay, for this first rate documentary.

That was great video with a difference, nice to see the other side of the net so to speak, and nice to see that commercial fisherman fish sustainably by taking what they need and putting back what they don’t, even if the gulls do grab a meal. Also nice to see the gulls eating what they should be eating and not raiding bins. Would love to see more of this content.

By-catch, is usually dead. Trawling has ruined the balance of nature. Why do you think the sea birds have dwindled, or moved inland? So many wild creatures rely on Sand eels. WE don't even eat them. They are for animal feed, or ground up to make fertiliser.

50 years ago I went out with Brian Petit and caught exactly that! Ray, sole, greens and reds. Back to the harbour, and into large couges then on the moorings in the pool, into many small couges that were given for Brian to fill. Any leftovers went in the market on the stall to sell.

Nice video mate. Having worked in the Australian Prawn Fishing Industry I found your info relevant and interesting, especially as a greenie on the boat. I did wonder how many times the skipper thought, "I wish he'd put that f***ing camera down and give me a hand!" Nah, just kiddin. Bit of info. I spent 3 years fishing for prawns in Australia's north. Some stats. Longest time at sea was 3 months, with a 10 hour break in Darwin for an unload. I ventured from Townsville in Northern Queensland to a couple hundred miles South of Cape Leuwin, which is way south of Perth, Western Australia. We spents months in teh Kimberleys, fishing. The sights were amazing. The heat was hot and the freezer was cold. Mostly we would unload to a mother ship. Boat was 86', say around 25m. Freezers ran at minus 32C and could carry 30 tonnes of frozen prawns. We did 21 days of "24 houring", whereas the nets would come up every 4 hours, 24 hours a day. 2 hours to clear the catch and 2 hours to sleep and or work, repairing nets, equipment etc. It was relesntless. Longest sleep in those 21 days was 2 hours, yes, longest lseep in 21 days was 2 hours! To get the job, I hung around the wharf in Darwin, asking if any boats needed a "Tucker Deckie." A "Tucker Deckie" is someone that works for NO wage, taking only "tucker" ie., Food for payment. At the end of your fuel trip, usually 28 days, you either get dumped on the wharf, or you are offered a job, or get a recommendation for a job from the Skipper. The Tucker Deckie system sorts out if you like the life at sea, (work like dogs, eat like kings) you learn to splice ropes, mend nets amongst a slew of other skills. You also work out if you get sea sick and can work in a confined area with a small group (5-7 ppl) without going troppo. So guys, get that tourist/work visa and head on over. The most amazing 3 years work I have ever did.

Now seeing this has changed mymind a little on trawling. The image that springs to mind is the giant mega trawlers with a huge crew and a bigger net. I'm happy with the idea that smaller fisherman can do this kind of trawling sustainably. However I'd like all large scale trawling to stop in the UK. I wish we could just implement more sustainable practices. I want the seas of old to return. Pre 1980, when the fish were huge and and angler could gaurantee a catch each time they go fishing. I heard greenpeace are sinking giant boulders to catch up and destroy trawler nets. Which while I think "great idea for stopping the mega trawlers", would be pretty devastating for the guy you took the trip out with in this video. Is there any good long term solution?

Thats probably the best trawler fishing i have ever seen, and he only takes what he needs and does his best to keep everything alive. I always really disliked trawler fishing since the only ocean fishing i can do is in the adriatic sea which is the most overfished ocean on our planet and thats because of unsutainable trawler fishing and net fishing in general. But that dude is doing it the right way, even tho he only trawls for bait, what he does is 100% sustainable, he has suprisingly little bycatch and just keeps what he needs, what a legend 😄
