Summary :- The Dalai Lama said that the fist teaching of Buddhism is about what disturbs the mind, and what removes those disturbances. The basic nature of the mind is luminous (bright) awareness. Negative, disturbing emotions are like stains or defilements (dirtiness) that covers this clear light mind awareness. These destructive emotions are temporary and don't belong here naturally, therefore, they can be overcome. The teaching of the Buddha is like climbing a mountain, starting with the basic teachings, and goes through the turning of the wheels up to the highest yoga Tantra. Things exist, but they don't exist the way they appear to us. If you scrutinise objects, you may see that things do not exist objectively (externally to the mind, really). Attachment and anger etc are just based on ideas of an external stimulus. Things are only reflections of the mind itself. From many years of experience, I can say that things are empty of any objective existence. Things merely exist nominally (in name only, virtually) by way of conventional (agreement, custom) designation (name, description). Things exist, but not as distinct and separate from the consciousness or cognition (perceiving, knowing) of them. Things exist as one nature with the cognition and there is nothing outside. They just appear to us because of some imprint manifesting (revealing itself) for us. Therefore the 'NON-DUALITY of the Subject and the Object' is taught. So the teaching of 'EMPTINESS' has to counteract (oppose) our ignorant grasping at independent existence. Your consciousness, for example, is dependent nature. It is devoid of objective and subjective duality, therefore it is perfect nature. Starting with ignorance and ending with aging, all processes that arise from dependent origination, we accept to be like a dream and an illusion. From emptiness, empty phenomena arise, for example joy, karma and the sound of a drum. Propensities (inclinations, tendencies) are the cause of karma, afflictions, the conventional and ignorance. When free from propensities, the mind is happy. A happy mind is tranquil. A tranquil mind is not confused. To have no confusion is to understand truth. By understanding the truth, you attain freedom. Freedom is described as limitless, singleness and ultimate truth. As the supreme awakening mind, it is also described as emptiness. Without the view of emptiness, you will not be able to overcome grasping at existence. You need this understanding of emptiness, together with altruism (selfless kindness) to overcome all the defilements [that obscure the clear light mind of liberation.] 46:33 minutes. ---------------------------------------------- I am unable to complete this summary. In my opinion, the translated videos should not be translated live. No translator can listen to such a profound talk, AND convert it to English, AND speak the translation, AND emphasise the words meaningfully, all at the same time, live. This live format feels a bit frenzied or frantic, making it difficult to follow. Could the translator (who is excellent) just sit down for 2 days and record the words in a calm, thoughtful way. What was said was good and profound. I respect and thank the Dalai Lama and the translator very much indeed.

I read your summary. I'm a few days late. I agree with your assessment on the translation. I am finding it hard to follow what is being said. I'd like to hear it being translated a lot more smoothly.

Bruce Roberts I think this is HHTDL personal translator, or one of them. He would be a Buddhist scholar as well as his Legal for diplomacy within his LIVE UPDATES. HHTDL refrains from speaking to us in English on such Political 'aggregates' for example .. HHTDL Legal knows what he can and cant say publicly To refer to your statement ''The Dalai Lama needs to explain briefly what terms like 'aggregates', or 'dependent origination' etc are instead of assuming everyone knows what they mean'' HH does not assume !!! These terms will be the next BUZZWORDS in Business i bet just like the term 'Mindfulness' ! @@emmamock7695 The word 'Aggregates' is not political. Aggregates are the senses and thinking, basically. English speaking people usually think it means crushed stone for making concrete. The word was used without explanation, so almost no one knew what he was talking about, including you, it seems. In my summary on the 'Day 1' video, I wrote the definition of it. The word 'mindfulness' is self explanatory, and was first presented with an explanation of what it meant. It is unfortunate you feel that way about the UK. I understand your very clever joke there. Lol. My comment under my summary was meant as constructive feedback. But I felt frustrated when I wrote it, and I can see that it is lacking in the respect that the interpreter and Dalai Lama deserve. So I apologise, and will edit or remove it.

I really appreciated your comment Bruce. I think when people see videos like this, over an hour long, it can sometimes be hard for them to want to listen to all of what the HHTDL says but his insights have really impacted my understanding of mindfulness and Buddhism as I am a solitary practioner and have no community to learn alongside.
