That wound likely isn't from a predator.. that's right where the yolk would be attached, and it was still absorbing if the duckling wasn't ready to hatch. Sad to see.. he probably won't make it.. but when you don't know what to do, do your best.

IF this is a "premee" this baby wouldn't have abdorbed the yolk sack. Therefore there was no predation. His abdomen absorbs the yolk while hatching or just before. A True preme wouldnt have absorbed it and it would look just like this. (Was a Wild life rehabber specializing in birds) also 10 years of chickens, flock of 50.

There was no predation here if it is a preme. A preme wouldn't have absorbed its yolk yet. What happens is some how the egg was not ready and his fam probably trampled him as he was a few days behind hatch of the rest. The egg cracks, yolk isnt absorbed so with all the commotion it naturally comes out as it never was inside him. It was still alive because there wasn't a preditor.

She said the egg was open and the yolk most likely rated by predators. And she also said the duckling has a wound. I'd have the same hypothesis given the belly wound.

@@Faiththegray ma'am I absolutely heard everything she said and obviously knew the egg was open. It absolutely don't mean that there had been any predation. I did say that if the egg had been trampled ( by fellow nest mates... Even mom) that it would look just like this. I've seen my chickens do it to the eggs that hadn't hatched after 3 days ( mom waits 3 days to leave nest to ensure other eggs ( late hatchers) that may be a day or two younger to hatch. Only one egg. Can be laid per day.) What happens with all the hatches babies and mom moving about, an egg that's not due to hatch gets trampled cracked ECT then since preme hadn't absorbed the yolk, in all the ruckus the yolk sack gets septated. Have you ever seen a wet, freshly hatched chick just out of the egg? While they're wet ( if you'd never experienced it before) you may think something looks off or wrong. You can actually see the yolk sack. Even during a normal hatch the yolk sack can be pulled on and separated from chick. It can get caught on something . The abdominal area can continue to close off. BUT this is exactly what it will look like. A wound. There is no actual wound from predation. Just where the yolk had been pulled away from the abdomen. I've seen this many times over the years and recognized it immediately. I heard every thing she said and I absolutely disagree. To a novice bird owner or a very new volunteer wild life rehabber it might appear to have been predation. Had it been predation that bird would be in something's belly. JS It makes perfect sense that you'd both have the same hypothesis, if you haven't raised birds long, and not been around several clutches of hatchlings. It's just one of those things. Experience.

@@Faiththegrayok, so I went back and watched the video again, frame by frame, stopping on the baby's "wound".... That is the umbilical stump. Looks like the umbilicus separated to close to the abdomen. This can happen while chick vigorously kicks at the shell trying to get out. There's gonna be a. Bloody stump in this case. I also stopped on the broken egg shells. The group inside looks almost like scrambled eggs. Lol that's just afterbirth. That yolk sack is inside the baby. This is why the baby looks like a whole NEW BIRD the next morning. Lol If miss mousetails would ever need to ask questions or need help figuring out what to do in certain situations wether if it's wild life birds or other I'd be more than happy to help. It takes a while to learn everything you need to know. So hit me up if you should have any questions about all things birds. Thanks🙂
