    Seeing him interact with a non native speaker discussing learning French really made me appreciate Hugo as a teacher. He doesn’t interrupt him or correct him but rather guides him in the right direction and is very patient with him finding the right way to express himself and at the same time is there at the right time to help with finding the right word or expression but always allows Damon to try first. Anyone who gets Hugo as a teacher in real life or any prof that teaches with so much patience and is generally interested in letting their “student” (not the case here but if it were) express themselves is very very lucky!

    Even better, he fixes the "mistakes" on the French subtitles. I quote-unquoted the word mistake because Damon speaks absolute perfect French and I wish I spoke it half as good as him as he gets his message across which is the most important part of language learning, but it's also cool that Hugo makes the proper translation.

What I really like about Damon is that he's an American in Paris. You have some other YTers saying how much they love Europe and how much more European they feel and about the culture and blah blah being all pretentious (coughnathanieldrew) but Damon appreciates Europe for what it is, and is realsitic about living here like all the administration stuff but at his core he doesn't pretend to be someone else, someone that isn't an American in Paris

    I agree on what you said about Damon, he clearly sees the good and bad of each city but deals with it and still enjoys it for what is! But I don't see Nathaniel as pretentious at all, to me he seems just as enthusiastic about life in Europe as Damon is, and about traveling in general as a way of discovering yourself. Maybe Nathaniel can seem pretentious because he shows a more serious and introverted side in his videos though, while Damon is more open about his life. There's more than meets the eye when it comes to what people share online :)

  • @sv-bd5em

    @sv-bd5em

    It has little to do with introversion. It’s his general pretentiousness and superiority complex. He acts like he’s sf deep but then again he still goes to like Osteria Francescana because it’s an exclusive place. If he’s so into mindfulness and deeper meanings why should he care about things society assigns a lot of value to? He’s peddling some faux deep stuff and acting like he’s the first one to think about the meaning of life. In the video he did with Damon he basically admits to putting on a mask for his KZread audience and his insincerity is palpable. Feel free to like him but not everyone has to so you don’t have to provide me with reasons why I might dislike him such as his “introversion” - I just don’t find him genuine, sorry. Captain Sinbad did a parody of him and I think it’s pretty accurate.

  • @yuzan3607

    Nathaniel is only a second generation American, it makes sense that he's not as American as you'd like him to be, he probably feel more connected to European culture than to American culture, since Argentina is closer to European culture than America is.

    7:31 It's been my experience that French people say, "Tu parles très bien" to people who don't speak well. They say it to encourage a person. They don't say, "Tu parles bien" to people who speak fluently because it's a given that person speaks French. This is why it makes me uncomfortable when people tell me that I speak well because it really means that I don't.

Bravo ! 🙏👍👏

    Omg i can't believe this ;-; this is the crossover i didn't know I need Also as an intermediate french learner, it's super motivating to hear Damon speak! I started watching his videos way before I even began learning French, and I remember not being able to understand a thing in his French-speaking videos. And then when I finally started to learn French, I found it too difficult to keep up with him even with subtitles, mostly because my listening skills were still really bad. And now, one year and a half later, I can actually understand everything he said (albeit with the help of the subtitles)! I haven't listened to much French content except for Hugo's podcasts for the past few months, and he speaks quite slowly and clearly, so I wasn't expecting to be able to follow any kind of organic speech that isn't slowed down for learners like me. It was a lovely surprise and quite a magical moment, when I realised I actually understood what was being said. And just in time, too, because I felt like I was about to hit a slump in my studies. So thank you, Damon, for being such an inspiration, and Hugo, for being such an amazing teacher, and for creating the awesome content that you put out!

    @@Ivenyyy Bonjour ! I am a french student. I am just curious….If you are a native speaker, can you tell me how good Damon’s french really is ? I am at a B 1 level in French and I understand most of this conversation. I feel Damon is very communicative….but not that far from my level….and he has been living in France for 10 years ! So I just want an opinion from a French native. I would hope that after living in France for 10 years, I would be pretty much at a native level.

    @@vaidyaga Bonsoir ! Yes French is my mother tongue. And if you're not far from damon's level well you must almost be fluent. He does very few grammatical and syntaxical mistakes ( he does though ) but his pronunciation still gives him away, he's got a huge American accent and sometimes does pronunciation mistake ( for ex "immerZion" instead of "immerSion" ). But still I would say he's fluent and has a C1 level ( when it comes to casual French, I don't know how he does with classical/complicated French ) he can express his thoughts clearly with no latency and has no difficulties switching subjects. Apart from pronunciation and little mistakes, he's very good. I don't know if you know about Paul taylor, he's British and has been living in France for ten years . His French is so good that if I didn't know he was a foreigner, I wouldn't be able to tell. Good luck learning French btw ! ^^

Question de goût.
