Huge fan of this film. One of the best comedies to come out of the 80’s, imo. A couple fun facts: Paula Abdul was the choreographer for the dance sequence when the African princess is introduced. Arsenio Hall and Abdul met on set and he ended up appearing in one of her first videos (Straight Up) as they had a short relationship together and still remain friends. On another note regarding the princesses introduction, the lady who pushes through the crowd to actually introduce her was actually a popular female impersonator named Bill Gordan. He passed in 2018 unfortunately. Lastly, you obviously knew that James Earl Jones went on to play Mufasa. The Queen, Madge Sinclair, is also Sarabi, in The Lion King, making the 2 of them King And Queen in 2 films.

Glad y’all enjoyed it. Coming to America is one of my all time favorites.

Jheri curls were BIG in the 80's. folks with a jheri curl needed products to keep their hair from drying out and it basically got on everything, lol. John Amos was also famous for his role as the father, James Evans in the show Good Times. And I could be wrong, but I think the Kunta Kinte quip was a nod to the mini series, Roots which John Amos was also in.

This is a staple in 80's Black households. "Soul Glow" was a spoof of Jerri Curls (which looked greasy). The preacher was a caricature of Black Pastors (not just Al Sharpton. That cadence is very common in African American Southern Churches (especially Southern Baptists). Because it was the 80's that singer Randy Watson was dressed flamboyantly, not like Little Richard... Think "Prince". The Queen was also the voice of Simba's mother in The Lion King. I'm glad you enjoyed this, oh... and you can skip the second one.

One of Eddie's finest films, and he made a ton of bangers in the 80's!

I'm so glad you picked up the parallel in circumstances between arranged marriages of the royal family and the "royal" American businessman family being the same for the two characters.. so many do not pick that up! 😉👍

What I like about this film, is while Royal family lives in luxury and pamper themselves, people of Zamunda really love the royal family. There are no many body guards. Its a fantasy but its nice fantasy. A turly good royal family that looks after their people. Also the many roles Arsenio and Eddie had did lead up Nutty Professor and its fun sequel.

I'm so glad you already saw Trading Places (1984) so that you got the joke about the two homeless guys. Madge Sinclair had been the first female Federation starship captain to ever appear in Star Trek, in 1986's The Voyage Home. She later appeared on The Next Generation as the mother of the Enterprise's chief engineer (played by LeVar Burton, who was young Kunta Kinte in Roots). She also played the wife of John Amos (the older Kunta Kinte) in Roots. ****I'd LOVE to see you react to the original ROOTS!!!**** It starred John Amos, LeVar Burton, Lou Gossett Jr., Ben Vereen, Leslie Uggams, Ed Asner, Lorne Greene, Robert Reed, Sandy Duncan, Chuck Connors, Vic Morrow, Burl Ives, and Madge Sinclair.

Eric LaSalle was in ER, not Gray's Anatomy. I am surprised Jen didn't connect Soul Glo with Jheri Curl which was huge in the late 80's.

There's 2 notable moments in Trading Places where Eddie breaks the 4th wall by looking into the camera. And 2 in this film. Eric LaSalle does it as well as Dottie the poodle. Both movies directed by John Landis.

The movie your mom is trying to think of in the opening is “Sgt. Peoper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”. It starred Peter Frampton and the Bee Gees. It’s a movie based off of the Beatles album of the same name. Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Billy Preston, Earth Wind & Fire, and Steve Martin all sing in it too. EW&F singing “Got to Get You Back in my Life” and Robin Gibbs singing “Oh Darling” are incredible. A lot of people don’t like it, but it’s a fun watch.

Glad that you and your mom liked the film. Me and my friends have been quoting this movie ever since it came out. I've probably seen it 100 times now.. LOL The line that Amos said: "I'm a put my foot up your royal ass" was ad-libbed by him. The original line as written didn't work for John and after he said it, Eddie and the whole crew busted out laughing. That's when the director John Landis knew it worked.

Yes, later at the Awareness Rally, Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall each play 3 characters in the scene. First Arsenio Hall is shown onstage playing Reverend Brown, who then introduces Randy Watson, the lead singer of Sexual Chocolate (played by Eddie Murphy). In the audience, Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall also play Akeem and Semmi, and also their barbershop characters Clarence and Morris, who get into an argument when Morris puts a fried chicken bone into the money collection basket. In total, both Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall each played 4 characters in the movie.

Actually, in the very first barbershop scene, Eddie Murphy plays 2 characters, barber Clarence, who standing behind a young Cuba Gooding Jr giving him a fake haircut (notice that Clarence is just clipping the air with his scissors and not even touching the curly wig on Cuba Gooding Jr). Eddie also plays Saul, the elderly Jewish guy talking about Muhammad Ali. Arsenio Hall plays Morris the barber who always sits down eating. Clint Smith plays the 3rd barber who was playing checkers with Saul.

If you haven’t seen Eddie Murphy’s first movie 48 Hrs, you should check it out. Him and Nick Nolte play well off each other, and it’s way more serious. Definitely more of a crime/action movie. Eddie holds his own as a dramatic actor and the comedy is still spliced in to let his true character peak through. Good movie. Well done on C2A. Huge fan.👍

Eddie Murphy is a talent and genius. From SNL, Stand up, movies and the multiple characters!

I love that you both recognize so many of the actors in this film. Normally people watching this for the first time don't know who John Amos is but you recognized him, Vondie Curtis-Hall and Garcelle Beauvais. This is my favorite movie of all time and I quote it all the time! There are a few big names behind the scenes for this film, too. I'm sure some folks in the comments have mentioned one or two already.

Eddie Murphy also played multiple roles in the Nutty Professor movies (nearly the whole Klump family). They are hilarious!

The scene where John Amos(Cleo McDowell) trips and falls from running back and forth wasn't planned. He got back up still in character. Great actor.

I live in LA and here that same haircut Hakeem got would probably costs $25 in a black barbershop here. Your average “basic” haircut in LA now costs $45 on the cheap at a black barbershop. Minus tip. If you wear your hair short it gets really expensive. And to be honest, you can’t blame barbers, because real estate is expensive here. Both to pay rent for a barbershop and to live.

Fun fact: The Queen is also Simba's mother in the Lion King

It's always nice to see someone who gets the Trading Places reference.

Harlem Nights is a must watch starring Eddie Murphy, Richard Pryor, Danny Aiello, Red Foxx, Jasmine Guy.

Mike Meyers played different characters within each movie, but this was much better, in my opinion.

The "McDowell's" restaurant is actually a Wendy's. A couple of employees from the McDonald's up the streeet heard about the commotion and threatened to sue. Director John Landis got permission from the head office at McDonald's, but others weren't told.

The guy Eddie Murphy's old jewish character is based off of is the make up artists father -in-law. If you look closely in the barbershop scene when Eddie is getting a haircut, 11:40, the director used the father-in-law as a stand in double for the scene. You can see how close it was to the actual model. It was so god, they did a test and had Eddie go around talking to the people around the lot and even fooled the head of the studio and some of the other execs who weren't to sure about Eddie doing the character...

FYI.. the director of the movie was John Landis, who did the Blues Brothers and 48 Hours. He and Eddie did have a good relationship until this film was made. A lot of things happened, but from reports they had a physical altercation during filming. It's amazing how well the movie turned out.

That McDowell's was actually a Wendy's for many years (the location is on Queens Blvd), and on occasion or two they transformed it into the McDowell's on anniversary's for this movie. But that restaurant has long since been shut down. As a lifelong New Yorker who grew up in Queens/Manhattan, well it just makes this movie all the funnier. I even by chance happen to know a couple of (actor) extras who just happened to be spotted in this movie.

I absolutely got Eddie Haskell vibes from him! 😂 Saw this in the theater, and as soon as he started addressing the Queen, I immediately thought of Leave it to Beaver.

Obviously do what you want and what the majority of your subscribers want, everyone has different tastes as well, but while I love this first movie, have watched it numerous times over the years, I couldn't personally make it past 30-40 minutes of the more recent sequel. I didn't like it at all. Of course there's no way you'll know if it's for you or not other than checking it for yourself at some point. Glad you checked this one out and both enjoyed it.

I think its fun watching tonsee how many different characters Eddie and Arsenio play in the movie. Seems like ten at least.😂

Great reaction to a really great classic movie by Eddie Murphy. Unfortunately the sequel wasn't that great.

Still a great movie. I haven't seen part two yet, but from what I've read, it has mixed reactions, I would definitely check it out down the road, if nothing more than for nostalgia. I didn't catch the whole reaction, but in case it wasn't mentioned, the soul glow fella was Eriq La Salle, who went on to have a very good career on ER.

It's worth watching. The original is so iconic that the sequel does pale in comparison, but it's got a great "The gang is back together" vibe that makes it enjoyable.

@@dr.burtgummerfan439 That's what I'd be more interested in, is everyone back together or at least most of them. I certainly wouldn't expect it to live up the original, even if the movie is half as good, I'd still love it. I grew up in the 80's, so watching Eddie Murphy during his best years and to see Arsenio Hall hit it big for a brief time was great, in addition to having James Earl Jones in there. A friend of mine told me the same exact thing though, that it's good, just not as good, which is fine.

The Gibb brothers movie was called Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band a musical featuring the Beatles late sixties songs. It was a Hugh flop and hated by all four members of the Beatles.

The old guys in the barber shop are played by Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall in prosthetics

Speaking of black panther the costume designer for this movie was the custom designer for black and the color purple starring Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah a Steven Spielberg film

Not sure if you're a Star Wars fan or not, but I watched one reaction video that identified a call back to the movie & put up a side by side.....when the King was in McDowell's talking to Mr. McDowell and told him not to call Akeem, that he would deal with him himself.... apparently Darth Vader had a similar scene. I love watching people catch stuff like that. I watch reactions to this movie JUST to see people recognize the Dukes🤣😂🤣😂 it is never not amazing seeing people see that...I love it.

In so glad you two saw trading places first. It's always best to watch Eddie Murphy movies in order. He does a few more "crossover" jokes. You should watch Harlem Nights and then Life.. both Eddie Murphy movies as well. BOOMERANG is also a good one to watch. Eddie Murphy also plays a ton of characters in the Nutty professor.

I love love love this movie. The sequel was fun as long as you don't expect lighting in a bottle twice...if that makes any sense.☺

The first COMING TO AMERICA is genius. I love those jerry curl commercials. Sexual Chocolate is also a good example of something so terrible it’s actually ‘good and terrible’. However the 2nd COMING TO AMERICA, sucks. An obvious cash grab with no heart. It’s just terrible. And not in a good way. Oh by the way, if you’re not familiar with jerry curls you missed out on the 80s experience. 😂 The hair products went drip, drip, drip all day long. Ruined shirt collars and everything else. If you wanted to keep the hairstyle which had to stay moist and not have your pillows destroyed you had to wear a shower cap. All I could hear was crinkle, crinkle, all night. And my pillows were still ruined. It was like 80s fashion, dance, music, etc. Fun at the time, but embarrassing and hard to understand the appeal in hindsight.

Coming to America is a masterpiece!!! I usually say to give a movie a chance, but unfortunately the sequel is awful. If you want to see James Earl Jones in another great movie, I recommend Conan The Barbarian(1982) If you haven't seen it already.

critics and fans didn't really like the second one but i liked it so if you do it i will watch it if you don't do it i will understand i hope you do the second one
