squ34ky2 the funny thing is that that's how they portray how other people hear "I'm a Christian" in movies like God's Not Dead 1& 2, God's Club, and other Christian Flix. I highly recommend God Awful Movies podcast. Very funny stuff.

That line at 5:36 is just sheer ignorance. She's implying that EVERY non-Christian that has ever existed has/is been incapable of being a decent human being. I doubt any rational person will miss this show when it gets cut.

@@nowandforever117 You're kind of missing the point. 1) Generally speaking the roles are never reversed. The overwhelming majority of the African-American community identifies as Christian and spiritual. Being an atheist (at least and out atheist) puts you in a small minority. 2) Atheists wouldn't care if their children were religious or not because there is no creed of atheism (as there is with religion). We recognize that religion should be a personal choice, something that you are pressured or brainwashed into. So imagining an atheist being upset with their kid dating a person who is religious makes no sense. 3) The outrage has more to do with the fact that this isn't a fictional or isolated occurrence. It's actually something that happens in the black community and it's how people generally view atheists. Coming out as an atheist is worse than coming out as gay because at least if you're gay they can just pretend that god will forgive you and not talk about it. But if you're an atheist, you're viewed as "evil" and without morals and all this bullshit. It's more of a reason to be disowned. And that's why it's horrifying that this goes on.

Well at least the atheist was portrayed honestly, he was a real person not a cartoon-ish mockery of atheists. He even made good points about the drug dealer and bank robber. Although it kept atheists "on the outs" at the end, it was a step in the right direction in terms of our misperception. As one commenter said, he's a well dressed successful and loving man whose only "fault" is atheism, so atheists come out looking pretty good in this. Not great, but still: a step in the right direction.

Yeah. I mean I the line of "oh you saw some horrible and that is why you are an atheist" made me think this was going to end in the family accepting him. Instead it was the group seeking justification for not believing in a higher power. Same with "why did you listen to the music" with "I like it" somehow being an oddity.

@@fenwickism The guy did hide his atheism from her and went to church with her, sung the songs etc...the woman thought he was a Christian, very duplicitious in deed. The man should have told her right from the start so it could have ended right there. The guy was gutless. I'm suprised that many atheists can't see how that a devout Christian and a strong atheist can't be successfully married unless one side weakens their resolve. One side is going to have to weaken for the marriage to work. This is why Christians say as Scripture does that the Christian should not be yolked together with unbelievers but rather marry "in the Lord" (another Christian). Both sides have totally different worldviews and tension will build up.

It's a tv show about religion ... people only found this... broadened it.... and didn't know that there.are parts where the woman questioned the way they lived

The only thing that could make it worse, is being on BET.

It's funny how this shows tries to portray religious people as the good guys when in actuality they look like the most negative, close-minded, judgmental people You managed to make it seem like dude dodged a massive bullet. Well done 😂👏🏽

I understand it is very difficult to be gay or an atheist/agnostic in the Black community because of the strong cultural/social influence of the Black church. For example, a majority of African Americans voted for Proposition 8 (opposing same-sex marriage) in California. The man in this snippet was very courageous to "come out" to his fiance's family, and it cost him a relationship. My heart goes out to Black atheists/agnostics.

This is why a lot of black non-believers will not come out. The majority of African Americans are very closed minded when it comes to their religion and their believes. I understand, I was raised that way also. But real love and understanding comes from us not some god. The young lady asked him, "How do you love someone if you don't love Jesus". And would ask how do you love Jesus and judge your fellow human beings that way?

For the Christian the epitome of love is from God, and Christ is the supreme example of love and sacrifice, and service. Since an atheist doesn't believe in God they wouldn't understand when St.Paul says "love your wives as Christ loved his Church and gave his life for her". The atheist isn't capable of that kind of self sacrifice and love. The woman's statement in the light of Scripture makes perfect sense for a Christian: If you don't love and reject Jesus who is the epitome of all goodness and sacrifice, love, service and self giving etc to his people, who was tortured and hung on the tree for the love and redemption of others...if you can't understand that how can you possibly love others in that manner? Only through Christ can that come. You used the verse about judging incorrectly...in the context of the passage Jesus was castigating the Pharasies and scribes for their hypocritical behavior. They told the people to do so many burdensome things but never did them themselves, yet they judged others for not doing them. Jesus says "first take the beam out of your own eye before you seek to take it from your brother's eye." Jesus himself said to them "judge righteous judgement". Judging isn't a sin but it is if you are hypocritical and doing the same things.

Ah! But it IS a good portrayal of atheists! A kind, reasonable, loving dude who was just honest about his beliefs was cast out of an otherwise loving relationship for ideas he wasn't attempting to push on anyone. Sounds like being an atheist to me.

I'm not really supprised by the story line & I think the guy is better off without her. From what you can see they're in love, he treats her well, gets on with her family (up until that point), is well dressed & presents himself well & has a good career. Doesnt lie cheat or smack her around, yet the second he mentions he's an athiest, all of a sudden they all go on the attack & he's now 'evil' & worth less than a drug dealer & a bank robber because they believe in god Its one of the reasons why I'd be wary to date someone of any religion as an atheist & coming from a black christian family a lot of the stereotypes shown here are true Despite what people of faith seem to think atheist are not evil & you dont need a belief in god to be a good person or live a good life. If its more important to you what lable a person wears christian, muslim etc rather than the actual person then thats definitely someone I wouldnt want to be with, that hypocritical bs righteous attitude that I'm better than you cause I have a faith.

Well...."deny" implies that you're in denial. Obviously there's nothing to be in denial about because there's no empirical justification to believe a god exists. I deny the claim "a god or gods exist" I don't "deny" that "God" exists because he doesn't seem to.

As an atheist, this has actually happened to me. Now that I watch this and look back on my own personal experience, I can easily tell that if they were going to be that cruel and ignorant, then that girl and her family wouldn't be for me anyway and I'm now better off without them. Also the atheist character is very unbelievable, inaccurate, and underdeveloped. Tisk tisk.

That's hard. I wouldn't say, that an incident like this was totally beyond my realm of possibilities, but you'll hardly come into a situation like this, here in Germany. It's just, that even people who call themselves religious or christian don't pray before dinner anymore. According to various polls made here, around 1965, about on third of the population said grace before a meal, wo thirds knew this from their childhood. About 17% did it occasionally. In 2012, only 9% did it, and only 43% knew this from their childhood. So, it's not only, if people believe in a religion, but how people live religion in everyday life. Funny thing is, that we even have a kind of "substitute" for praying before dinner, some people use in their families with little children. They just say "Vielen Dank für Speis' und Trank!" ("Many thanks for meal and drink!"), and some grab their hands when doing this. I think, things like these tell you a lot about how much religiosity is engrained in culture.

And yea as soon as she brought into question about me being a good man or not because of my belief I would have left her ass. Omfg that episode was so disgusting! I can't believe the amount of prejudice this show is promoting. The actors should be ashamed of themselves for even being willing to show that garbage on tv.

This is all SO wrong.

Can I ask the black audience why most blacks are religious? I don't mean that in offensive way, I'm legitimately curious. In exodus it instructs you how to own and best your slaves yet the black community tries to justify it by saying it was indentured servitude. I'm really confused.

Black Religiousity has it's roots in Africa. Religion is one of the few things that were able to travel when names and nationalities were lost. But more than that the church gave hope to slaves. They saw in Jesus someone who was wrongfully enslaved like they were and with his salvation could be their own. Thirdly the church was used as an organizational tool for the black community. It was a central station of organization pre-emancipation and it's been vital since emancipation. The church was one of the few institutions that gave the black community a pathway to respectability. You couldn't be a Doctor or a Lawyer but you could be a faithful servant of our lord and savior.

Do you think, that the civil rights movement is also still a factor for religiosity in black communities? After all, the most prominent figures in the 60s were directly linked to religion, and they propagated religious belief, along with civil rights. From what I can gather, protest was often organised by using church as a vehicle.

***** most definitely. My more complete answer got javascript erased. But basically yes. In the 60s one of the strategies was to show that the black people were respectable folks. Jesus loving folks just like ya'll. And the church was one of the most effective ways to show that they were respectable. So to see preachers and deacons getting water hosed and dogs sic'd on them was a powerful message because these were the mandingo wild monsters they feared, they were civilized Jesus loving men and women just like anyone else in the suburb.

SuperWolfkin I understand. With prominent figures in history, it's obvious, I think. But what about the other way round, when religion uses a secular topic, such as civil rights claims, in order to promote a certain religion, church or denomination? How does this affect society today, and maybe 50 years ago? Imho, you do see this in groups like the Nation of Islam, promoting the empowerment of black people, or a stance against drugs, to draw people into their organisation.

This is way more realistic than the obligatory Christian movies where the atheist is an evil dude. Also shows what it's like being an atheist in the Bible belt. Oklahomastan over here. Literally had a girl write me off for being an atheist.

I like how he wasn't an atheist due to trauma, but he also phrases things weird. Like when the father asks him if the disagreement was over his religion or theirs, he said "both", which an atheist wouldn't say because atheism isn't a religion. Another thing he wouldn't have said is that he "denies" the existence of god. This is the kind of stuff that tells you it was written by a christian, since christians love to rationalize atheism as a state of denial, or a religion of its own. Other than that though, it was far from the worse depictioon of an atheist I've seen, which makes it all the more jarring when they act as if the bigotry toward him is justified.

Family sits down to have a nice meal with daughter's new boyfriend. Boyfriend casually and honestly professes his atheism. Family freaks the fuck out, including daughter. Father turns immediately hostile, tells daughter to shut the fuck up, berates boyfriend that he was initially cordial towards, then proceeds to get up and leave, simply because he cannot stand to be in the presence of an atheist. Boyfriend attempts to reconile with daughter, but daughter becomes outraged at boyfriend for his atheism, accuses him of being unable to distinguish truth from lie and being unable to love anyone at all, simply because of his atheism. Daughter storms out. Pathologically overbearing father levies platitudes about love at daughter, but is unabashedly relieved when daughter values faith above love. End episode. Outstanding television! Worthy of a multitude of Emmys! African American, be proud!

So many Christians ignore this or have never really read the bible (especially in the older languages) it's ridiculous. They cherry pick scripture to justify hatred. OR they pretend to love the "soul" more than the human to justify abuse. Even worse, they tend to hate or have little regard for Hebrews, Muslims and Catholics even though those groups arguably follow the principles in the holy books than many Western Christians

I told my grandma once that I was an Atheist when I was maybe 13, and she shrugged it off. I helped her get to and from church since then, and occasionally stayed with her if she needed more help. I started writing about Atheism more openly, and she heard me express my Atheism again. For about a year, she kept saying, "But you went to church!" She still doesn't understand that I went because I love her and wanted to help her, not because of any other reason. It's frustrating.

In actually like the clip. it depicts a real- like scenario, the atheist is calm, collected, and reasonable and he discriminated against by a group of bigots.

Not sure what offended me more. The anti atheism or stale acting.

I've watched this multiple times. But I CAN'T decide if the show is pointing out the hypocrisy of the family or standing for it

As a devote gilded atheist, I can say that this video is a pretty accurate depiction on what it's like to deal with the unenlightened. As the euphoric black gentleman eloquently put it "It was a decision based on science, reason, and logic." Unfortunately, all of these qualities are foreign to your average fundies. Who are fueled purely on emotion, irrationality, hatred, and fairytales. The sooner this fictional mythology is a thing of the past, the sooner we can progress as a society.

I’m agnostic. And I use to post on my fb my beliefs but my family was asking me questions. I no longer discuss it anywhere if they can see or hear it.I just keep it to myself.

the guy did nothing wrong, he did not hide his religion from her because he has no religion. An Athieist is simply someone who has NO religion and does not have a belief system. How can she blame him from hiding his belief system when he does not have one?

Religious people tend to think, that atheism was just another belief, not the lack of it. Of cause, nobody wants to be dishonest to other people, and if you don't share the same beliefs or religion, that surely is a big thing. The situation depicted in this video was a little weird, I think. I don't know, how you guys see it, but when you invite a friend to meet your family, you were certainly been dating for some time, and if you're not "super-catholic", you've probably been a little bit more intimate with a person, than just holding hands, and after all this time you withhold what you believe? Nah...that's a bit fishy.

Keith David’s voice is so iconic that I immediately recognized him 😂 I’ve always loved his roles so it surprised the hell out of me to see him in this. Probably the only thing I’ve seen him in so far that has sucked…..

This show only had one season of 6 episodes. I think we can all see why.

I lowkey hate that he replied as "both" when talking about which religion. Atheism isn't a religion, it's just the lack of belief in a higher power. It's a bit nuanced in this case, but I definitely wouldn't have said that.

In trying to make the atheist the bad guy they've actually succeeded in doing the opposite. He seemed like a nice, reasonable guy and the family seemed like a bunch of closed-minded bigots. I'm really surprised that they portrayed the atheist realistically instead of as a stereotype, but, now I see why the stereotypes exist in the first place: without stereotyping it exposes the raw intolerance of hating another normal human being simply for what he doesn't believe.

It seems like they were going one way with this scene and then decided to totally switch course at the 1:24 mark. The boyfriend is depicted as intelligent, successful, and extremely respectful - the kind of guy anyone should be happy to welcome into their family. It's incredibly sad that, despite this, his family has completely disowned him, all because of the stupid little fact that he views the world a bit differently than they do. It, at least, seems that the audience is supposed to feel sympathy for him and rightfully so. Keith David is a great actor, and there could've been such a powerful message conveyed if he, the overbearing and conservative - but loving, father figure, who we know wants what's best for his daughter, saw the good in the boyfriend and accepted him. For added effect, the biases of the family could be shown, with wise old Bill setting everyone straight and resolving the situation. Instead, ignorance triumphs, with even the girlfriend having a fit over the whole ordeal! I'm honestly baffled.

This is so incredibly sad. Choosing religion over love. *shakes head* One's religion does NOT determine the kind of person they are. Their choices and their actions do.

I am from Europe,a white guy, I think people misunderstood the basic message of the show,imo it was not pro-religious or to attack atheists(black or white) but the opposite to show how intolerant or simply crazy ordinary people who are religious can be.Or it is simply left up to us to decide what is right or wrong.If it was pro religious inteligent remark about drug dealer wouldn't be allowed in the script and the guy would have been described as different character not the one who is so calm,deliberate,nicely dressed,well manered etc.He appear to be perfectly normal guy here.I'm atheist too and have gone thru a similar situation while being present on my cousin's confirmation (chrism) event and after party.Big table,full of "ordinary" people,when asked by some family woman if I have been confirmated too and when was that I said I haven't been at all which surprised the attendants.When asked "oh no and why are you not??" I said I'm atheist. And then...just like in this video,embarrasing silence around the table which lasted a little bit until someone decides to break it lol. After that no further questions have been pointed to me lol.

What I find interesting is that they didn't strawman the Atheist, nor did they depict him as the ugly Atheist. Makes me wonder if the writer's intent was to point out the intolerance and ignorance of the family.

I see your point, and it's plausible. I guess we'd have to talk to the writers and directors to find their true intent. But the show's target audience were primarily African Americans and sometimes, even other African Americans can challenge cultural norms of their own race. This could be one of those times, because quite honestly, the brother didn't seem to have his priorities straight (talking about praying to God that he doesn't get pulled over for drinking and driving), the dad was an asshole, and the sister was very aloof.

I " came out" as an atheist to my family a few years back. At first they were mad and very upset. I told them plainly , atheism isn't " dis- belief" it's " un - belief" which can easily be fixed with empirical proof. After thinking about my position they lost their anger..

The way he was treated was like saying he was Jewish in front of a catholic family, or coming out gay in front of a super conservative Christian family. Every Sunday church sermon message is to Help and Love one another NOT JUDGE one another. When I go, I don't get judged if I miss 2 Sunday's, the pastor asks if I'm ok? I was scheduled to work!How can you go to church and are told to spread the love of God but look across your Perkins Breakfast table and judge those who didn't go but to stick your nose up and tip the waitress with a church card.....

It is really hard being a black atheist. Everyone will run away from you. You better just keep it to yourself.

I can tell you from my experience, even in less religious societies, you have to be cautious, who you tell, you're an atheist. Though you won't be a complete pariah or outcast, you still will have disadvantages and will experience hatred towards you. People literally can't afford to come out as an atheist, because it often takes a certain amount of wealth and social status, in order to be more independent from other people. Religious people often claim to unconditionally love their neighbor and even love their enemy, but in reality they mostoften act differently - especially when people don't subscribe to their idea of religion as the only source for morality and justice. They often see this as a direct attack on their personality, and they act accordingly. I think we, as atheists, will always have the problem, that we don't want to lie to people, or somehow betray them, by not telling, how we think, but at the same time we need to protect ourselves to be part of society. That's the moral dilemma, we're all in, I think, and it gets worse, the less money you have in your pocket. In German, there's a saying by famous German poet Goethe, which is hard to translate, but I try: "He, who has science and art, already has religion. He, who does not possess them, haveth religion" I guess, that this was meant elitarian - that the better off and better educated elites have no need for religion, whereas the "riffraff", the "plebs" needs religion, and it's shoven down their throat. But it also works the other way round, that in the lower classes, you simply have no choice, but to at least pretend religiosity, in order to live a decent life. I hate it to guts, but that's how it works, I guess.

Sad but true. I wish I had kept my mouth shut. From my experiences Christians flip like Dr. Jekyll when they find out you aren't religious. And a lot of the times these so called good Christians don't know what committed relationship is but they love to look down on you.

The best way is to not get involved with someone who's religious when it's friends or relationships. If it's your family, then it's definitely legitimate to keep it to yourself.

And you know everyone of those actors has in their real lives encountered the same irrational rejection based on their skin color. The irony.
