Reminds me of when my family all found out. I originally had discovered the community myself, and I tend to want to tell others about stuff I learn or things I'm doing. So I ended up basically showing my mother some art and fursuiters and stuff, and she thought it was all cute. Fast forward to about a month ago, I was sort of grumbling under my breath in the car with my whole family there, I said something about "hotel in pittsburgh" (since I needed to book a hotel for AC of course), and they all sprang up and started asking what I'm going to Pittsburgh for. Great, I'm in the spotlight. I just said I was going to a convention called Anthrocon. My brothers had heard of it and thought it was pretty funny that I was interested in a bunch of people in animal costumes running around and all that, but weren't judgmental, and my father and rest of company were all sort of curious, since they'd never heard of it before. Just like you said though, take it casual. I just answered all their questions to the best of my knowledge and ability, even when my one brother (who loves to mess with me on this kind of stuff) brought out the old "Will there be any yiffing?". Fuck him for that, haha, but it was all in good fun. (not at the time though, I had to try and act casual when my parents directly asked, "What's yiffing?" Not an easy task.) A little extension on the explanation part, one of my bestest of friends had heard the wrong sorts of things about the community, and when he discovered me (through screensharing and an FA tab) was audibly confused/concerned to a degree. Rather than trying to do the explaining everything tactic, I went for the picture approach. I showed some of the art I'd commissioned, and he quickly realized that it's not all about *that*. I actually think he found it somewhat cute too, but didn't want to admit it.

awesome video. I told my parents and holy cow I was so nervous about it I tried to be casual about it but I got a little crazy at some places but they took their time to listen and try to understand why I was interested in this fandom and they really where accepting about it they even gave me suggestions on some things which I found weird XD but now it's all good except my father who likes to annoy me with furry puns such as "did you have a pawsome day?" lol

Your parents sound awesome and a lot like mine. They thought it'd be funny to buy me a big fox body pillow for Christmas... Granted, it did have me in stitches for a solid minute, so I guess it was funny. Good advice! The most important thing is to be calm and collective about it, like, don't make it such a huge deal or freak out because the body language would come off strong to others and they'll see it as an actual inflicting issue. If you're chill chances are others will be chill. Not a lot of people would understand it.

Thank you. Seriously, I'm fucking tired of people just handwaving this when I know "coming out" really has hurt some people before. Not everyone has awesome parents or awesome friends who are cool about this sort of thing, but it can still hurt to keep it in.

Oh for sure. This whole situation can be incredibly damaging under the wrong circumstances. That's why I hope this video can also help you furs feel out if "coming out" will hurt or not. Cause if it's gonna hurt, it's not worth it. It'll hurt to keep it in, but a lot less than if it comes out.

One of my favorite quick explanations of what a furry is, is " People who like cute, fluffy things that talk." Obviously that's not ALL anthropomorphic animals, but it's a damn good portion.

I was a little nervous about telling my dad but he didn't seem to care. I told some of my friends I 'm a furry heck lots of friends I have are furries. What I really appreciate is to chat with popufurs but not because their popular but their respect and what they do. Love this Video great job on it

Coming out of the kennle

This video is AWESOME! In terms of telling my parents, luckily, both my parents are totally fine with it! I told them pretty much as soon as I became part of the fandom, which wasn't that long ago, but my mo was all like "oh, yeah. That's cute!" and my dad didn't mind either. Once I told them what it was about, I think it made since to them because I LOVE ANIMALS and have all my life. Being casual is how I told my mom I was a KZreadr. Goes out to lunch, nice day, hanging out, being chill: "Hey Mom you remember how you used to think I was making a bomb in my room when I was 20? And then I told you I was playtesting games?" Well, I was also making KZread videos." / "Really?" succeeded by a bunch of curious questions and really supportive comments. It was a cool conversation. I'd tell her I'm a furry too but it just doesn't seem necessary unless I start going to cons, but I can easily cover that up with oh yeah "The Field (Work) requested my help"

My grandmother was the first to know I had an interest in the fandom, she didn't realy understood but she didn't seemed against it. She only recommended me to wait until I bought my house before investing in a suit, which at the time was great advice. The real problem is, she told it to my father (which saw the CSI episode), which then told it to my brother before I could ever tell him. So, one night, I ended up at a supper with the family of my sister in law where that point came up in the conversation. I believe my brother said something in the line of "it's not like this bitch thing you want to do during your freetime". At that point, I had all the attention faced toward me and I was in a position where I was forced to explain what the fandom was all about with the limited experience I had with it. It could have ruined the night, I did felt a bit embarassed, but I was lucky enough that they took some form of interest in what I had to say and we later carried on with other topics.

Oof... having family tell other family can often lead to bad things because they usually don't present it in the right way. At least, in your case, it looks like it ended pretty neutral. As a side note, your grandmother was spot on about suits. I might address this topic in the future, but fursuits should come almost last in terms of monetary priority and certainly much lower than a house.

In that regard, it's great you finally told everyone. You finally have an interest you can point to and say, "yup, I like that!" It's unfortunate that your brother and father reacted that way, but maybe in time they'll come around! Like I said in my video, I had a few friends who were turned off by it and thought it was just a fetish. But after a few of my stories about awesome times at conventions or some of the drawings it's inspired me to make, all of them eventually came around to at least being neutral about it. People can be stubborn and stuck up in their ways, but they can also surprise you with their flexibility. In time, maybe your father and brother will surprise you! :D

When I told my mom, I had made my fursona sketch and I literally just went up to her and showed her my sketch and said "can I make this costume/cosplay sometime in the future???-puppy dog eyes-" then she asks me what it was then I showed her a bunch of pictures and explained it to her. She said maybe I could. And right now I'm literally getting ready for a comic con and my mom saw two fur-suitors(?) yesterday and looked at me and said "you know what? We can start on your fur suit for the con next year. And I might just make something like it." -squeals slightly- I'm so excited!!! X3

Last night I admitted to myself that I like the furry fandom. As I see it it's no different from being an anime fan so yeah..

I was nervous telling my parents that I was a furry my mom asked me why I spent so much money. At first I didn't wanna tell her but she just insisted that I tell her and my stepfather. At that point I started crying but finally I was able to calm down and explain to them what a furry is and I told them that there's an adult part of the fandom which I'm not interested in. Then after explaining about the fandom they were very supportive about me being a furry. My grandma got nervous when I told her but then after I explained to her about the furry fandom she became very supportive. As of now nobody else in my family knows that I'm a furry.

I am so happy, I found one of my friends at school and we met through her tail. lol She actually didn't know what a furry was but I asked her "Are you a furry?" long story short she thought I was crazy, but I started to explain and she was really interested and now we are both saving for a suit, we make art together, and we have been planning a road trip to go to a con together. I have very understanding parents and friends, and my mom loves crafts so making tail and even my suit that I made was fun to her. Almost all my friends are furries and the ones that aren't support me and the fandom I wish everyone great luck on finding friends like mine, ones that will last a lifetime.

This is great advice. Making big deals out of a hobby is the best thing to make people worry about it, and perceive it as your obsession. imho

I almost had to use your "I got caught" advice today. Had I watched this video before my parents almost saw my KZread history I would've felt more comfortable with the idea of telling them that I'm a furry.

i legit told my mom that i was a furry when i was about 9 years old. They honestly don't really mind that much. they just think of it in the same way as any other fandom i'm in to. such as anime and stuff like that. so they were pretty chill about it and they still are!

Coming out as a furry? I had a friend come out to me as bi. Last man in the world I'd have expected, too. I decided it might help if I were honest that I was a furry. He just laughed. "Do you think I couldn't tell?" He never brought it up, he's known, yet never treated me differently. Telling him wasn't necessary. It's not generally necessary. We had a chuckle over it all, but if he suspected it, others have too. It shouldn't change the groundwork of a friendship.

I've told my friends I'm a furry and they don't really care. Except for one my friends. One time when I was trying to draw a dutchie my friend told me it was ugly. I have Frankie x, a furry KZreadr and my favorite fursuiter, as my wallpaper and she tried to make me change it. I try to hide it from her now but she has stopped being so rude when I hide it. She's been my friend since kindergarten. It makes me sad that she doesn't like my hobbies and the things that I enjoy.

In my experience, it's often a good idea to drop friends like that. If they're not supportive (and honestly pretty manipulative) then they're not friends...

My mom's super cool and understanding! She would take me to anime cons and loves to see other fursuits. She gets mad if I go to a furcon and don't send her pics. She thinks my suit is creepy (Made by fleecerot) but she does think most other suits are cute and neat. My coworkers are more creeped out

Everyone except for my dad likes the furry fandom. I'm not counting my mom because she doesn't really know what it is so she doesn't have an opinion on it. My friend is making me a fursuit head and I'm overly excited over it because I might be getting it soon. A few months ago I went over to her house to hang out and she let me see the progress on him so I got to try him on and I haven't smiled so much in my life because I just really loved it even though it wasn't finished. I took a picture of it because I wanted to show my mom and then decided that even though they hated it, I will show my brothers and sister. When I showed it to my sister she said "That is so weird and disgusting. How do you think Brother #1 will think of this?" That brought me down because I really love this fandom and I am excited for my fursuit and when I want to share it with my sister all she can think was how others will feel about me having it and not how I feel about getting it. I showed my dad and he loved it and was interested in it because he loves art so I think that's why he liked it. I ended up showing my brothers anyway and they didn't say anything but they just gave me a "what the hell is wrong with you" look. But I'm fine now, I let all of that just go into the back of my head. I express my love for the furry fandom by drawing pictures of my fursonas and hanging up on my wall. I finally came out to my siblings and I did it like this- "I'm a furry okay." And then I explained it- they still don't like it but they just don't say anything anymore whenever they catch me drawing or watching furry stuff :D

Interesting and well presented video! As a parent myself and as a furry, I'd actually be stoked if my kids (who are 3 now) developed an interest in furry, and I'd want to know about it (I realize it's likely for this never to happen and that's cool too) Honestly, if you are under 18 and a furry and you are worried about your parents kicking you out because of a hobby, 1) I can't believe that it's legal for them to do that (inform me if I'm wrong) 2) I feel for the parent that would hate a hobby so much to basically disown their child, and I feel for the kid is that situation.

That's great that you support if your kids have this interest or not! The best thing a parent can do is support their children in whatever path their life takes. Hopefully your kids turn out fluffy tho. Nothing bonds my parents and I like a shared interest! For disowning/kicking a kid out, if they're under 18, it's not legal (at least not where I live), but that doesn't mean they can't make the child's life a living hell. As as for that severe of a reaction, I've seen things like this happen to friends. One of my friends told me his parents refused to talk to him for a couple months and stopped driving him to his activities because he bought a camera and said he thought of taking up professional photography in the future. Some people have a very clear, defined path for what their child will do and who they'll be, and the second that child steps out of line, they either rip them back or cut their losses. It's really tragic and I wish people like that would just not have kids, but it's the way the world works...

You're a very wise samanda! All excellent excellent points :D I've not told anyone directly since I dicovered I was a furry, I've just being going about my day, and oh look now I have a new hobby. So posts from furry pages have been appearing on my Facebook timeline 'cause I've liked a thing or commented on another thing, or I've started talking openly to my artist friends that I've started drawing anthro art now and I have a refsheet and by the way can you commission me some art? etc etc. The only real moment of awkwardness was when my mum popped round for a visit and noticed I had Aberguine up in a tab on KZread. I explained it was a hobby just like anything else really, she thought it was a bit weird, but that was the end of it. Just play it by ear :P

Exactly. If you just treat it like it's no big deal, people assume it's no big deal. I had the same thing happen with my brother tho. Came home for a holiday with my suit and left the head out on my desk. He walks in one day, started a sentence, noticed the head, stopped, walked backwards out, took a deeeeeeeep breath, then walked back in and asked me what the heck that was. I just said it was an animal costume I wear to conventions. He asked if it was like that cosplay stuff? And I said, basically yeah. And that was the end of it. Nice and casual. No big deal :)

I love the presentation of this one! And, you're right, cool, calm and collected is definitely the key to letting people know about furries. There's no furries around where I live so I have the monopoly on explaining about them. I'm always very casual about it and have found that people are mostly interested and want to learn more. You're right about it being a hobby, too. These people should not be made to feel ashamed of what they like to do in their spare time. I'm a big fan of Medieval history and spend a lot of time making chainmaille Jewellery. And I think that dressing up in a fursuit and going to a convention and dancing, etc, is no different than putting on a medieval costume, going to RenFairs and taking part in the reenactments. It's all just in fun.

I'm actually really well-inforned from this. The way how I was found out was my sketchbook being left open while a friend came over. He just said, "You draw furries?". My exact reaction was just a shrug. xD But all that aside, I really like the quality of this video. *insta-subscribes*

That's how a ton of my friends have found out. I just was casually doodling something furry or was watching a furry KZreadr. Usually goes similar to yours. "Huh, furry?" "Yup" "Hmm. Ok"

So inspiring, maybe someday I'll have the courage to do this

one thing I normally do is just not tell them and if they find out then they find out, for example I had a pair of cat ear headphones and she said "you're such a furry" because I was whering them, I was just like "well I am" and she was like "really?" then I explained it to her a little more, she was a little weirded out, but she's fine with it

Really good advice. I live in a house with four other guys - all students - and its becoming difficult to hide. A lot of what you said applies to me. What if they don't get it ya know? What if they steal my phone or see my PC or something. I'm always minimising tabs before they open my room door and I always break a sweat when they want me to search something on KZread. But yeah your advice on being casual about it, I'm gonna give it a go. If the opportunity arises and they start to pry I'll tell 'em straight. Thanks man, appreciate it.

Frenzy That is an intense situation... I feel the same for some stuff (searches on yt, or minimizing the browser), but still living in my parent's house it's not hard to hide that stuff. I encourage you to "come out"; maybe you could "study" a way to describe your hobby if you get the occasion, so you'll be more prone to do it in a casual way without creeping anyone. Good luck! (also, I'm expecting a continuation of this story, if you could write here the turnout, if anything happens, it would be really nice) :)

Thanks for understanding buddy! It is a pretty intense situation. There have been opportunities to bring it up or just simply let them see what I'm drawing but I'm far too scared to do it right now. Its not that I'm ashamed, I think I keep it secret for me rather than anyone else. But if I ever do tell them I'll post what happens. They're nice people but I think that they will see me very differently after I explain it. Thanks again! :)

The golden rule to tell anyone *ALMOST* everything is always be casual, i tell my parents that i smoked marihuana and they take it very well in that moment,and now i have my own plant :), I love my parents.

I generally agree with your thoughts about how to bring up the subject but my parents (mom) hates and likes the furry aspect of me. Hates that I go out in public and likes the general art of the fandom so I get mixed emotions from her and yes i'm old enough to be on my own. Anyway these ate really good videos keep it up.

Yeah... These things can often be muddled up and difficult. That's why I'm hoping we can get some good discussions going here to fill in the gaps between my general scenarios and explanations.

I have used some of these tips like at my birthday party my friend brought up a person and she was like " (insert name here) is probably a furry Hahaha." And I replied with " I'm a furry." And she then said "Oh." And the topic didn't come up again.

It sure is nervous af for me. XD Im not sure if my family knows about me being a furry but it did scared me back when my father did a surprise room visit in 5am and found out that I was drawing instead of sleeping (I was actually rushing for an entry of art challenge). The morning they tried to find where I stashed my drawings, and they said that my drawings are pretty nice, that had flattened me of course. Not sure how they thought, but Im still trying to figure out here XD

I told some of my friends that I was a furry and they seemed alright with it. This one guy that isnt really my friend but he is a friend of a friend and he found out that I was a furry because I was working on a video project and it have a picture of my fursona's face on it. He walked up to me and was like "is that a furry? Why is there a furry?" I just said that it was one and he asked me if i was one. I said maybe at first but a few minutes later he asked again and i said yes. Thankfuly my friend was there to help me out as well.

Well, depends on how they frame it, but assuming that it's semi-neutral to not so good, you just keep going with your life. If someone brings it up, just casually comment on it like the non-issue it is. However, if you think it's going to make you a target of abuse or bullying and the reveal wasn't too public, the best course of action might be to deny it. Safety is number one here so avoiding that danger is key.

I've only told my best friends that I'm a furry (which is 3 people, 1 of them is now a furry called Regan and I've just made his fursuit ^^) and I've not been discovered YET. My family also knows I'm a furry and they don't really care at all. The only way I can get discovered is by my youtube which I'm a bit nervous about. Can anyone give me some tips? Should I delete my Unboxing video so they can't see my face? I also noticed that another one of my 3 friends is following a furry account on instagram, and I had no idea. I asked them if they liked furries and they told me they are alright. If someone in my school finds out and roomers spread, what will happen? Please give me some help and thank you everyone for your time reading that!

+MoonLight_The_Furry I'd say you're probably fine. The only way it seems people will find out is if they somehow managed to come across your unboxing video which is probably unlikely. And if someone does, just roll with it like the non-issue it is. It sounds like you have your family and friends' support to lean on.

Assuming that you're a minor and can't detatch from your parents, I'm afraid there's not a ton you can do if they won't let you do something. I would try to figure out why they seem so hostile towards this and maybe you can explain all the great reasons you would like to go. Living under parents who don't celebrate and promote your interests sucks. It really does. But even if you can't participate in person, there are plenty of things to do online! I participated in the fandom solely online for almost 5 years before taking the physical plunge! Hang in there bud. It gets better ^^

I guess i kinda got caught... i told my parents that im bi, and they were cool with it... they then ask me if i like anything else. I try to casually explain it, and they really dont care

I was born and live in Colombia so it is difficult to find someone here that likes the furry fandom too, i think it is difficult to get out because even if i am independent my family should want to know what is it, my native language is spanish ( so excuse me if my english have mistakes) i'm practicing english , i am 14 years old . So,could someone tell me how much cost a fursuit in pesos?

hola, se que esto lo comentaste hace 1 año tal vez ya sepas cuanto cuestan o tal vez pero si es así te recomiendo que si tienes Facebook busques fursuit makers, soy de mexico asi que solo encontre makers mexicanos pero tal vez encuentres makers en Colombia, solo pregunta cuanto cuesta el tipo de fursuit que quisieras tener y creo que tendrás que enviarles una referencia de tu fursona para calcular el costo aun asi lo que eh visto de algunos makers dicen que no atienden a menores sin el consentimiento de sus padres y de los makers que atienden a menores con consentimiento permiten de 15 a 16 años como minimo para tener un fursuit ojala te ayude ;) PD: siento que tengas que leer tanto

+Rowdy Raccoon Well, explain that a con is just a place for people who like the same stuff to get together and talk about it. There are fun events and people are there to have fun! Then ask what about that sounds like it only appeals to weirdos. If they hit you with an argument that it's more the type of person who would go to one of them, point to yourself and say you're a type of person who would want to go. Unless your parents think you're a weirdo, that might sway them :3

Nah, I'm a normie, to my parents. My parents more worry about my safety at a con. They said its fine to go when I move out of the house, so I may just do that. Thank you a bunch, Myron! (I'm nearly 18 and they still worry. XD) They know what cons are, but they've seen the news things of ComicCon and AnimeCon, and they really worry about my well being. I mean, I understand them, but still. Just let me go, I'm a pretty safe person. (I wander alone after school, skateboarding around my town with headphones in.) They already know I want a suit like this, but not the intention its used for. I just said, "It looks neat, and I'll save for it myself!" I'll have to tell them about Anthrocon and MFF and all of those though, (they don't know what furries are), so yeah. Maybe it will work. I'm going to tell them when I move out though.

I remember I took my fursuit head to school to show to my furry friends on the bus. I know the feedback is sort of negative, so I had it in a bag all day. I even made sure I kept it below the top of the seat so most people don't see it except my friends. However, one person saw it and said, "Oh look, a dog fucker." Although I hear shit like this all the time on social media, and it never bugs me. For some reason I about punched the Kid. I'm very optimistic and quite passive too. He started a rumor that since the suit was made from fur (obviously) that I was an animal killer. It's annoying having to explain to stubborn people that it's fake fur made from polyester and acrylic. Well, that's all.

+Vang Grawly well first off, I'd probably hold off on the suit until you're at least 16-18 due to you still growing and some other issues. But beyond that, just follow what I said in the video. Stay casual and be positive about it.

I went to them and said I was a furry. My mom was like "I'm not surprised" along with the rest of my family. My brother said it looks like a pedophile ring but was like whatever. Grandmother thinks I'm weird but we don't get along to well anyway

Not sure who they are, but assuming it's someone you don't want to lose and they wouldn't approve, you probably shouldn't tell them. Though maybe you should do some personal digging as to why you don't want to lose someone who wouldn't approve of a simple hobby/interest.

One of my friends came out as a furry to his parents. He is now eating out of a dog bowl and seriously regreats it. Rip

Your mom is doing the laundry, and happens upon your fursuit in the closet/under the bed, etc. What do?
