Coming and Going at the CSX Queensgate & Norfolk Southern Gest Street Yards (Real-Time Version)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This is a video I shot over two days at the yards.
I was hoping to catch a few trains doubling out and leaving the yards but it was not meant to be.
I did see a newly rebuilt Amtrak yard locomotive.
We also catch plenty of yard movements.
There is also a sped up version you can check out.
I hope you enjoy and as always, let me know what you think

As a CSX engineer (now retired), I HATED coming and going to Queensgate! What a circus. They didn’t care about inbound crews from other terminals, no matter if it was CSX or NS. If you wasn’t a Cincinnati crew, you were bottom of the food chain! Nice video! I could tell you stories that would make you think, “WTH”!!??

Wow! That's interesting. I would've thought Queensgate would be an easy yard to enter/depart since it has several tracks in both directions. Where did you work out of that you'd be coming or going into Cincinnati?

Great vid, thank you for taking them. I never tire of these videos. Only wish I understood more of the jargon so I could relate better to just what was going on and who was talking with who.

I worked in Harrisburg yard which is across the water from Enola yard before actually coming out to Gest street yard last month. Nice scenic area in Harrisburg yard 👍🏾

I hope you are enjoying your time at Gest Street. What brought you to this yard? I'm hoping to catch a train going over the brick bridge at Harrisburg. I'm hoping that line is pretty busy.

CSX recently pulled one or two more flared sd70macs out of storage and it looks like that one might be 4782 it looks like. It is just kind of hard to see the numbers from that far away since they look like they are faded but it's nice to see more come out of storage as I have never seen 4782 before. You can see it starting at 38:53. The flared macs that are currently active and have been active for a while are 4705, 4753, 4758, 4794, 4810, and 4814.

Looking forward to the pa trip. Hagerstown is an hour south of harrisburg. Not as many trains as harrisburg but csx and ns cross each other there. Csx ex b and o line from Baltimore to Chicago through cumberland is fairly busy, but psr neutered cumberland yard itself

Thanks for the info. I'll see if I can swing it. I was actually considering stopping at Cumberland to check out the yard, but I'm hearing it's very hit or miss these days.

@NKY Railfan its busier now than before, but yeah it's either all or nothing. You can usually see some stuff there, as every road train works there now. You also have western maryland scenic on weekends

Thanks for letting me know. On a sort of related note, by any chance do you know anyone who retired or worked at any of the following facilities: Conway Yard, Enola Yard, Juniata Shops or was an engineer who traveled over Horseshoe Curve? I'm hoping to talk to some of them as part of the PA trip.

Great video! Quick question, I’m getting ready to fly my drone at the railroads here in North Florida and South Georgia, do you know any rules that restrict flight over the railroad? I will be flying CSX and FG&A (class 3) along with NS railroads occasionally.Example is like how many feet I need to stay away from the train, can I fly my drone at a rail yard a few hundred feet in the air, etc. Thanks for reading, hopefully you’ll know some information, I’d greatly appreciate it! Thanks!

I love your videos. I try to catch videos of trains with my drone up in the Dayton area. CSX has a pretty descent siding up here but I get nervous flying around it. Do you have to get permission and if not, has anyone ever given you a hard time while flying? I'd love to come down there and fly my drone and shoot video, I just never get tired of it!

  • @nkyrailfan

Glad to hear you enjoy the videos! You do not need any permission to fly over the siding (just don't fly over a moving train). I always try to be mindful and stay a little further back if any workers are around. I have not had anyone give me a hard time filming trains. Just stay on public property and you should be fine. I always enjoy shooting anywhere in the Miami Valley and hope to make another trip up the CSX line. Have a great day and enjoy your drone!

Flat track switching and classification in a yard is so slow and monotonous compared to a hump yard. Flat track you got to push the cars into the track assigned, uncouple where you want it, and then pull the rest out and reset the switches and do it all over again.

What frequency does Norfork Southern use

  • @nkyrailfan

    @nkyrailfan

From the yard south, it uses 160.950 From the yard north, it uses 160.980 I'm not sure the frequencies it uses in the yard, so I just put my radio to scan. That's why you hear NS and CSX calls.
