Pirates were outcasts who made up their own rules about the society they created, which, along with their violence and thievery, is what was so scary about them to "polite society". Women were given some level of authority and independence, gay marriage existed. It's not at all surprising that these topics are discussed on the show. It's like doing "Rome" without showing Roman mythology, warfare and women as the power behind the throne, or "Marco Polo" without empresses and concubines. Not every culture was like Judeo-Christian cultures. What's great about Black Sails is that it's true to historical culture even if it might seem edgy or shocking to portray it.

Nor Max ....or John for that matter. Was quite a shocker!! They ALL do soooo damn well!! Zachary is a voiceover guy also ...so no wonder he can keep up that RASPING voice for so long HAHAHA... Ahhhgghrrrrrr.....
