Comet's Broken Blood Feather! | What to Do With a Broken Blood Feather

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

My camelot macaw, Comet, somehow ended up with a broken blood feather that was bleeding a lot... he never gave any obvious signs of discomfort so I had to actually spot the blood on his play-stand to realize something was wrong at all!
If you find yourself in this situation and don't know what to do, don't feel confident doing it or don't have the tools to do it properly, please take your bird to an avian vet immediately. My friend who was a former vet tech with much more experience with these kinds of things than me, came to help me with this.
👩🏼‍⚕️Here is a helpful blog post on what to do if you come across a broken blood feather: birdtricksstore.com/blogs/bir...

BirdTricks I try to help my Quaker with her pin feathers, but she doesn’t let me help her too much before trying to bite me usually it’s in the back of her neck and it’s impossible for her to get it herself. She’s a lone bird, so she doesn’t have another bird to help her either. Any suggestions on toys, branches, or cage items to help her rub these away? She doesn’t seem to groom it much. Otherwise I’m relegated to a leather winter glove to hold her and crush the casings so she doesn’t. put a hole in me and I can help her.

If Comet letting you mess with a broken blood feather without too much fuss (granted there was probably more fuss with the part that wasn't filmed) doesn't say volumes about your relationship, I don't know what will.

Thank you for showing a small part of the behind the scenes grooming (and mess) of parroting. Parrots can't reach so many areas to groom and let a mate help out. Caged separately, it will be the caregivers job. Your videos really spread the word about bird housing and maintenance that let people assess if ownership is for them.

I have NEVER SEEN a macaw, even some really well behaved ones, be so quiet when being dealt with like that! Especially when dealing with a blood feather, which is quite painful for parrots. Comet's behaviour is exemplary and speaks absolutely loads about the connection he shares with his owner. What a patient bird!

I got the supply list off of avian website. Luckily. I’ve only had to treat a bleeding toenail & that is nothing compared to the amount of blood Comet lost. I’m sure this has brought up a lot of your grief from losing Bandit. My heart goes out to you & yours. 💕

I just thought that I would mention to never use super glue!!!

Oh wow, he seems like just the sweetest little guy. It looked like he was in pain while you were trying to stop the bleeding, but it was very apparent to me at least, that he has so much trust and faith in you. You clearly have a very special relationship and bond with one another. Very touching. I hope Comet is feeling so much better now. I have never owned any type of bird, but I love all animals and I am fascinated by anything medical, so I found this video really interesting. To be honest, I didn’t even know that feathers had veins or any blood going through them. I always thought that they were hollow. I was hoping that you might explain that on this video, but I guess you probably have another video touching on this subject. 😀💕

I have budgies. I used to by the Stop Bleed powder, but learned that corn starch is a perfect coagulant for stopping bleeding in an emergency. I have used it and it works! I just put a bunch on the end of the feather and it works great! I am not sure how it would work on larger birds, but it was fine for my budgie.

Thank you so much for posting this! I had no idea they made Avian First Aide kits with clotting powder in them, a total must if your a bird owner. My Goffin broke a blood feather and I had no idea what to do, or that it could even happen (of course it happened our first year together 🙄). Thankfully the vet was open and he showed me how to safely stop the bleeding and remove the feather without hurting the bird, and suggested keeping QuickStop on hand in case it happened again. Bless that Vet. That was 10 years ago, and thankfully the only thing I've had to use QuickStop on was either the birds toe nails sometimes after a trimming, or on the birds bite victims 😂🤷

My budgies HATE when anyone touches their pin feathers, so so help with preening from me, haha. I'm glad this was quickly fixed. I'm always a bit worried for my budgies because they are so little and even a small amount of blood loss can be extremely bad. Thankfully my avian vet is only a few blocks away!

Very educational, and you explained the process very well. I was surprised when you showed us the vein, I never realized it was so thick. Capri was so sweet trying to help, such a good little sister for her feathered sibling. Hoping all is well now, between breeding season and new feathered growth...it's a lot to handle. Thank you for sharing.
