Last time I got to visit was the holiday season in 2019. It was a wonderful time. Man, I miss Akiba.

Akihabara is so cool. After we left the station first thing we saw was the SquareEnix cafe. My wife and i eat there. Really cool place with nice food and cool stuff to buy. And after that we visited a lot of retro gaming shops. Trader and Super Potato was awesome. High prices but still a great experience. How is the situation at the moment in Akihabara? I saw a report that because of Corona most of the Arcades and a lot of the shops closed there doors forever. And how about tourism? Is it allowed to visit Japan? Greetings from Germany

I'd love to go to Akihabara but I need to take 3 planes just to reach Japan ;; is very expensive So pretty and amazing looking!

I am planning to go there on September 2022. Was supposed to go this September but not sure if Japan will open the gate for foreign tourists. Akihabara will be my first destination for sure. I am so looking forward to be there.

September is a great time to go but then again, I have only been once in September so not a wide range of experience! I went for 2 weeks around the start of September 2019 and it was about as warm as the midsummer time in my country, so it felt like an extension of summer. There are local festivals if you do a bit of research on where they are but there is a higher chance of typhoons during August/September. I will be going as soon as I can so maybe winter 2021 and/or April next.

That's because filming inside the stores is usually prohibited and not allowed without a permission. It's because of safety and it could be uncomfortable for other guests if it's a shop cramped in a small place. Out of respect it is better to refrain from filming or at least ask from the staff.

I saw on the news that the U.S. Department of State has raised the travel advisory for Japan to "Do Not Travel", the most severe of the four levels. I don't know if it has since been removed.

Currently at a level 3 "Reconsider Travel". Might not go down until the next month or two. Unless US ships enough vaccines to Japan to lift Japan's state of emergency in record time.

We can't leave the country here in Australia unless government approved. Have got doubts even going anywhere even by the end of 2022 now. Because of "do not travel" its very hard to get travel insurance if able to travel. Cheers.

The MOFA website has a page about it that they keep updated as things change. But basically the answer is no. Unfortunately there isn't much evidence that the borders will be opening to normal tourists from North America and Europe any time soon. Personally I am keeping my fingers crossed for summer 2022. We will have had over a full year of vaccinations by then, so I think there is a decent chance travel will be possible.

Can't wait to go back there again. It's funny/ironic that the girls are the heroes or poster images given the more militaristic culture in the past. Not trying to shame or judge any aspect of that past history but the girls/women would've been portrayed a bit different if things turned out differently.
