    Something that nobody mentions but is a VERY big deal is the removal of the timer. I feel like in previous games the timer became pointless, and if anything, was more of a hassle as you couldn’t take your time. I’m glad it’s no longer there.

  • @iliya1933

    @iliya1933

    7 ай бұрын

    @@OriginalGameteer I also had issue with the final boss. Bowser spends the entire game as a miniature planet/cataclysm, constantly talking about how he's charging up so much wonder power for this big, insane wonder that's going to blow everyone's minds, and all it ended up being was a kind of concert featuring Bouldergeist from Mario Galaxy and a floor that moves in time to the music every four beats. I'd been envisioning Bowser changing some of the levels across the worlds to have completely different wonders than they normally do and you have to re-complete them while, or at least have the fight be something where he throws a variety of different wonders at you and you have to use a variety of wonder flower abilities yourself to defeat him (like crash into him with the spike ball and/or do some vertical platforming to hit him from below with the hoppycap ability or something). I liked the idea of a music-themed boss and was excited to get something different from the monotone Bowser Jr. fights, but after beating it, I was pretty disappointed that THAT was the big, game-changing wonder that was the one central plot point of the entire game.

Only thorugh this game do I realize how special that time was, and what a privlege it is to be alive during this age to experience the joy and wonders that is video games! When I finally got my green check for "Jump Jump Jump" I actually fist-punched the air. Seeing other player's standees by the real flagpole gave me a sense of solidarity. Just playing through levels and noticing that other players were waiting and actually playing alongside me made me feel like we were working together to overcome an obstacle. I KNOW I wouldn't be as far along without other players or standees. I am going to play again offline for an extra challenge, but not anytime soon because there is a Spooky Splatfest on, boys!

    If you prefer challenge over creativity, I can see why you would find it a little overrated. Yeah this is how I feel personally. Most Super Mario Games are obviously meant to be easy to some extent, but this game has felt like it was made for babies so far. Completed worlds 1-2 and I can confidently say in comparison to NSMB or Deluxe, the levels were far easier. It’s nearly impossible to fall off the map and you dang near have infinite power-ups. Idc about the exploration of levels, but with the “no time limit” + many things to collect per level, it seems they transitioned their focus in that direction.

  • @nicked_fenyx

    I agree. That said, there are definitely some more challenging levels in this game as well. A couple of the five star levels almost made me pull my hair out. I died over 70 times on one of them - and I almost never die playing Mario. So I feel like the challenge is there - at least in a few levels - for those that want that, but the majority of the game does seem more focused on creativity. Which I personally love.

So the fact that I am ADORING this game and just having so much fun says a lot in my mind. I have genuinely been having trouble putting it down. I'm about to go face Bowser, and I have everything in each of the main 6 worlds except for a single purple coin in the the Magma World KO ring. Have Odyssey but never finished it. This game has me completely hooked. Three worlds in (just finished the trials area) and I've gotten every seed in them so far. I think for me it's the options. You can play as anybody that you want. You can speed through any stage or take your time and use a little skill or wherewithal to find a little secret here there. Doesn't feel repetitive or chore-like. And it's charming beyond belief. Doesn't take itself too seriously but the events keep you engaged just enough to want to see more. Music kicks butt, puzzles kick butt. Visually pleasing. Sign me up for a sequel now.

I’ve even enjoyed the more challenging levels (again except the lava ones) because they were genuine and exciting challenges that I got better at by playing through a few time. It’s a fantastic game, but I wish it wasn’t all right there on the surface. This game feels like it’s on rails and they don’t want you to miss a single thing on the first play through. Very few levels feel like that have real replay value. Chances are you’ve already collected and found everything the first time through. The levels are mostly very easy to finish with a few exceptions, and the game itself finishes very quickly. Most of the badges don’t really factor in, and a few of them are genuinely frustrating to use so never serve a purpose outside of its tutorial level. There’s so much to love about this game, it just feels like the beginning of something greater that we never really got. I feel like a hater being one of the few people finding fault with this game, but it’s a compliment to the game that I see what they did and wish they’d taken it further.

    The analogy I've been running with for how Wonder does what it does is that the stages are structured like jokes. Normal 2D Mario takes a lot of inspiration from musical scores, imo - which the pattern of the coins often directly spells out, of course. But here it's all setup-punchline, every level. I'm not sure how much this structure is directly useful long term, but it certainly works here.

    I loved the game, but it left me with some bitter flavour. Not because it was easy (and it was), not because was short (and it was), but because I found the badges completely useless... After gaining the first one, the parachute one, I never felt the need to change it (ok, maybe the dolphin badge in a couple of water levels). Badges were just a "find your style of gameplay and go with it". And ok, I'm completely ok with the game not needing the badges to finish it, but I hoped them to be more integral in COMPLETING the game. I was expecting going through a level with one badge just to realize that I needed another to reach a certain point to get a special coin or a secret exit. Don't get me wrong, the game was AWESOME, it surprised me continuously. But I can't shake off me the feeling that it could have been even better

    I truly think they saw how well received the Mario Maker games were and said “okay people are okay with wacky crazy stuff, and not just average levels. Let’s just roll with that” and that’s the main driving idea behind it. I don’t think they would have taken this big of a “risk” if those games hadent done so well

    Totally agree with Alex and the team on this. I WANT to play this game. THIS right here is my childhood all over again. This game looks SO FREAKIN' COOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. And the thing I LOVE about this game amongst everything else, is the removal of the timer. A lot of people will say 'oh what's with the removal of the timer. It's so stupid', but a game to me is meant to be enjoyed, and therefore you should take your time with it to find all the secrets and things. Not speed ran. ESPECIALLY if you're a completionist. And this is going to be of unpopular opinion but this is just me. Don't get me wrong, Odyssey was awesome and I still have it. But aside from that, ALL Mario platformer games NEED to be 2D. Not the spin-off games, because that's TOTALLY different. I know people will say 'oh but 3D is where it's at and is the future' and things like that, but here are some franchises you just shouldn't touch. And Mario is one of them. Sonic too.

    Lol, I had a similar experience with “Jump jump jump!”, ended up going with the extra ? Block badge after like 17 attempts. I have to say though, for the small handful of stages/challenges that were frustrating, they were at least a *good* kind of frustrating where you feel like you’re working towards perfection and have a sense of accomplishment once you do! I never felt like my deaths were cheap. But man.. I must admit.. I think this game edges out Super Mario World for me. It definitely sits up in my top 3 with SMB3 & Yoshi’s Island.

    The one point I disagree on is the online breaking the immersion. One thing the game does is that the online characters in your levels are always characters you are not playing. In that way it feels like the other playable characters going through the stage with you. It makes the online feel more like "Mario and friends on a quest" rather than whichever character you happen to play.

    This game is good looks only. When you go deeper into enemy placements and their movement and gameplay design- most people get blinded by fun effects and animation and overlook how superficial every challenge in this game is. Every action and goal requires zero to min effort and the player is only supposed to feel like achieving something. Anyone who has played Super Mario World, SMB3 will notice this game eliminated difficulty and got streamlined so much that even 5 star levels can be finished on a first attempt. In older games I died quite often in any level because how tricky they could be. He never. Most platformers have score or time limit so you have to be really good and fast to manage exploring as well and the faster you go and more you destroy/collect-the higher your score. You had to plan your path and decide carefully where next to maintain high score. Here they eliminated it because designing a game like that requires more work and new gen developers don’t understand arcade gaming where the challenge had to be well optimised in order to keep players coming back but not frustrate too much. This is lazy gameplay design and I am honestly really disappointed to see this happen to the most iconic platformer. I started played Tropical Freeze, and it’s milion times better than this. Mario Wonder just copies DK Tropical Freeze and Rayman Legends. Also other Mario games had far more strategy even with the world map and power ups/also 3DWorld. Here there too many making the player almost invincible and there is no need to be careful-ever! This is a huge let down for a big platforming fan. I guess I will stick with Tropical Freeze or Mario Maker 2- which offer at least a decent challenge.

    @@sahaprocks7751 I'm very picky when it comes to video games. I would have forgiven the game for constantly reusing Jr, because of how the Wonder Effects make each battle different, but having two entire worlds without any climactic finish really makes it that much more egregious for me. There should have at least been more varied Wonder Effects used for boss fights. If anything, I actually find these particular issues combined to be insulting.

There should be a higher skill ceiling with additional challenges for better players - i.e. a 'best time' for each level, and additional rewards for going the extra mile.
