Combining Two Audio Interfaces Using ASIO4ALL using ADAT as Clock Link

Музыка

Have you ever wondered how to use two audio interfaces to expand for additional microphone inputs and audio outputs? It is not as simple as connecting them to your PC.
A tutorial on the basics and the importance of clock sync between two devices.
A Demonstration of how to set it up for Windows OS using ASIO4ALL Driver.
P.S. I just purchased a new musical instrument, see it at the end of the video.

This makes no sense. If I have two audio interfaces with ADAT in and out and 8 analog inputs and outputs on each, I can just take the ADAT out from #2 bring it in to the ADAT in to #1, run the ADAT out from #1 to the ADAT in to #2, and then just use interface number #1 with whatever driver it comes with (no need to use ASIO4ALL) and have access to all 16 analog inputs and outputs on both interfaces through interface #1 to the computer. I can then use the interface software to route all channels however I like and see them all in my DAW where I can set the clock to "internal" for both interfaces to slave to through the ADAT connections. If your method was correct (and I've never seen anyone use ASIO4ALL to successfully combine two input or output interfaces), then I should be able to run 2 ADDITIONAL AD converters (like the Behringer ADA 8000 / 8200) to feed each of the audio interfaces and combine the two interfaces in ASIO4ALL to get 32 inputs and outputs with the ADAT handing the clock OR just use a dedicated external world clock to sync all 4 devices and the DAW PC. Unfortunately, I think that ask that you've done here is to make use of the ADAT input into your main interface to use the extra 8 ADAT in channels which is a well - documented feature of the audio interface, anyway. You don't even need to waste a USB port on your DAW computer, because it doesn't need to pull audio from the interface. It can do it with just the ADAT connection going into the primary interface connected to the DAW. Lastly, there's a maximum number of channels you can bring into a PC using a USB 2.0 port. My RME Digiface USB interface takes 4 ADAT ins and 4 ADAT outs that connected to any ADAT - enabled AD preamp (like the Behringer ADA 8000 / 8200) or any audio interface with ADAT ins and outs to combine them into a 32 channel in and 34 channel out (it has s headphone port) interface through a single USB 2.0 cable. But that basically maxes out the capacity of the USB 2.0 port. I'd love it if you were correct, though. I've got 4 audio interfaces with ADAT in and out and 2 Behringer ADA 8200s. If you were right, I could buy 2 more ADA 8200s and then have 64 channels of inputs and outputs and sell my Digiface USB. Unfortunately, ASIO4ALL can't (from what I understand) do this in a reliable way. It's what makes those damned Apple computers better for audio recording. They can combine interfaces right in the OS where Microsoft won't get off of their asses and fix their crappy audio system.

Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately, you are missing one important information in your analogy. Unless you are using high-end audio interfaces, budget interfaces that have ADAT, DO NOT connect their analog inputs and outputs to ADAT, they just go to USB. And ADAT only sends/receives from USB. So, you can't connect one interface to another with ADAT in/out and expect it to work Only a few high-end interfaces that have built-in DSP, like MOTU, RME, etc that will allow you to direct analog in/out to ADAT instead of USB. Here is a link to a very old video of mine showing how I used my faulty FireWire MOTU unit to act as an ADAT unit kzread.info/dash/bejne/e4iXm9iJdL2beJM.html With all of my testing, ASIO4ALL can handle up to 24 or max 26 before it grinds to a halt. This is due to the fact that the clock drift and processing is now handled by the PC CPU and not the hardware unit. I have used 2different make interfaces with 8 inputs each, totaling 16 inputs, and recorded all 16 channels for over 2 hours continuously with not one sample drop. Yes, MacOS handles multiple interfaces bit better with Aggregated units, but again, the stress is still on the CPU. The best way to extend an 8 in/out USB interface with ADAT is with a dedicated ADAT Mic-Pre such as Behringer ADA8200, PreSonus DigiMax, or Focusrite Octopre etc to get 16 analog in/out. Hope this helps your confusion and now makes sense :) I hope to make a new detailed video explaining and showing what I just said, soon.

I would have to agree with you Mr. McCalla. I followed the video to the T and was never able to make work with 2 interfaces. Someone described to me exactly what you pointed out here and I can now have my Presonus VSL 1818 to work with one of the old Digi002 interface I have. I can now have 16 input / output channels. However, I have 2 Digi002 Interfaces. I cannot manage to find a connection that would extend the additional Digi002 along with the Presonus interface to give me 24 channels instead of 16. I am on Win10 x64. The presonus interface is used as my primary interface and I use its driver software for configuration instead of ASIO4All. If I understand correctly, you said that USB 2.0 can handle 24 channels in Windows, can you please explain how I can my interface to see all 24 channels. I appreciate your clarification though.

@@RecordingStudio9 i have 3 different interfaces with ADAT that use FireWire and not USB (Profire Lightbridge, MOTU 828 mk ii, MOTU 896) and 3 that are USB (RME Digiface USB, MOTU 828 mkii USB, Celrsonic 20/20). They all use 8 channel ADAT. Therefore, I think that your statement about USB is in error. Further, if you have more than one interface from the same manufacturer, many times you can have more than one plugged in and the driver (in Windows) will combine them as one device. I know this is true of MOTU FireWire devices and is true of RME USB devices and FireWire devices. I'm sure there are others as well.

I highly recommend you watch my video response (kzread.info/dash/bejne/rKCmk7prnpvIn6Q.html) first before claiming I'm wrong. So, how do you have them setup to give you 48 inputs and 48 outputs, seen all 48 inputs and outputs by your DAW, with no aggregation? USB or FireWire, no different to what THE BUDGET UNIT, under $500, can do in relation to ADAT audio routing. Please show me documentation from any manufacturer that sells CURRENT audio interfaces under $500 that allows you to direct Analog input/output to/from ADAT, as well as having multiple units connected, USB or FireWire (remember, Firewire interfaces have been discontinued for many years now, apart from MOTU) and combine the inputs/outputs. Any unit that has this feature is well above $500, if not $1000. Don't mention MOTU or RME as they fall above the $1000 market. P.S. FireWire was designed to be daisy-chained, but not all manufacturers had drivers to support it. MOTU, RME, Focusrite, PreSonus and some Behringer FireWire units did support. But again, they all fall above the $500 budget. Hope that clears it.

This video is super useful. About a year ago I bought a zoom livetrak l20R digital recorder and it's awesome, but the only downside is that it doesn't have midi inputs for my midi keyboard or percussion pad. Now I can pair the zoom with my Saffire USB 2-in with MIDI and finally be able to have midi tracks on my session without switching gear, plus 2 more XLR channels if I need to. Awesome!!!

@@RecordingStudio9 Thanks for the response. I've been using the FCA1616 driver and I see all the inputs. Using 48khz. The issue is Cubase says everything is recorded at 96khz, and plays back at double speed. It also changes Cubase's project settings from 48 to 96. I change it back to 48 and it works fine. So, I'm thinking Behringer's 6 year-old driver might be the issue and therefore wanted to try Asio4all. The file sizes are 48khz size. The 1616 doesn't have a BNC connector, so I must use lightpipe.

So we have been running a similar setup for live band recording only the problem we found was during live recordings of a band using 16 channels and recording all 16 channels at the same time, the Presonus seemed to lack the ability of running 4 extra external monitors in addition to the two main outputs so here is what we ended up doing. We kept the 16 channels and snaked all the outputs for each channel into a 24 channel Mackie Mixer so we could control the room live but still capture all of the channels in the recording software. We bumped up the sampling rate to 2048 which resolved any latency problems and do not use the USB to the Behringer as the fiber does the work of pulling in the other 8 channels. It would be nice to see them come out with a better way to connect monitor wedges and use groupings to control what each player can hear coming out of the monitors without having to use a physical mixer to make it happen. There are only two main outputs one right and one left physically to plug in from on the back of the PreSonus to main speakers which work great for the desk jocky making individual tracks as a composer. For a live band recording it is a bit more difficult but getting better as more folks are wanting to record their jam sessions. Has anyone put three Audiobox 1818VSL's together and assigned any of the main outputs to be used to send to players monitor floor wedges? It has had its challenges, but I think we are coming to its limitations without just getting a Presonus 32 channel mixer that can record or something like it. Oh, did I mention whoever dies with the most music crap wins. When I mention monitors in the above, I'm talking about self-powered speaker wedges that sit in from of each player so they can set it to hear the singer or hear the bass or just keyboard and acoustic guitar etc. not headphones for a person sitting behind a desk. The ones you see band members putting their feet on all the time on the stage that can be moved around with a plug going to them. The audiobox has just a left and right output going to mains capturing all the channels for playback. Let me know if I'm missing the obvious, please.

  • @RecordingStudio9

I see you have taken the concept to the next level with live recording and personal monitoring with floor wedge speakers. I think you will hit its limitation and the only option next is to invest in a StudioLive 32 digital mixer to make your life easy. Thanks for your comment.

I am not sure, but you can just daisy chain the two ADA8200, no? Then get the signal from one of em into your interface. Maybe the I/Os of your interface are limited and that could be problem.

Hi, not sure if you can answer this one. I have a Behringer UMC1820 + an Behringer ADA8200. I also have a Presonus FireStudio Lightpipe which can support up to 4 x Behringer ADA8200. Can I link the UMC1820 Optical OUT to the Presonus OPTICAL IN for clock sync and then use 1 ADAT on the Behringer UMC1820 and then have 4 extra ADAT's connected to the Presonus? Basically in short i would have UMC1820 + ADAT unit. PLUS Presonus with 4 ADAT units. It would give me a total of 48 inputs (8 on UMC1820, 8 on ADAT, plus 4x8 inputs on the Presonus with connected ADATS) But this leads me to my 2nd question, can ASIO4ALL support up to 48 inputs?

  • @RecordingStudio9

    @RecordingStudio9

That is a question I can't answer as I don't have the units. But if you already have them, you can certainly try it out. As to ADAT sync, since the UMC1820 does not support WORD clock, you will lose one ADAT input on the FireStudio, which will make the whole exercise pointless somewhat.

Question: Can I just plug the Modeler Pedal (vis USB) into my laptop using Studio One (5) DAW and still have the Presonus mixer monitor the tracks (with individual fader control) of the audio tracks...OR, will I still need the ASIO4All software? Since you are joining two interfaces, you will need to Aggregate (MacOS) or use ASIO4ALL (Windows OS) to join the two devices. For reliability, set high buffer size, but this will add latency if you are recording and require direct monitoring.

This video (if you watched it) demonstrates the use of ADAT for clock sync only. If you have either of these interfaces and a Behringer ADA8000/8200 interface, then they are extended to have 16 inputs and outputs. So in your DAW, you can see 16 individual inputs and outputs.

  • @maxheadrom3088

I understood that! Very nice trick, by the way! But I want to know is if, internally, there is one ADC for each channel and if all channels are sampled at the same time. I think that's how these interfaces work but I need to know for sure before spending a lot of money on one of them - they are rather expensive in Brazil. We tried to use a National Instruments ADC made for lab use but it has only one ADC and it multiplexes this ADC among the 8 inputs it makes available. We tried ressampling the sound to try bringing the samples to the same time but did not get a good result. I found a ZOOM UAC-8 (USB3.0) and I'll check with the manufacturer about this issue. Do you know the UAC-8? What do you think about it? BTW, the trick you found out about using the ADAT for clock sync is awesome! Note: beamforming is done by using several mics spaced on regular intervals to create a "directional mic" or to find the direction os some audio source. Since it uses the diference in the time the sound reaches each mic, the timing is crucial. Thanks!

Super well done video and information. Question: I have Presonus Studio One 5 and would like to use my analog mixer going through one interface for tracking to the DAW, and on playback, I would like you use the Presonus StudioLive 32S mixer for monitoring. (I prefer recording through an analog mixer and using outboard compressors, external mic pres, etc)... So my question is: Can I use an 8 channel Focusrite interface (Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 Rackmount 18x20 USB Type-C) for my analog mixer going into the DAW (in my case StudioOne to record the tracks) and use the Presonus StudioLive Digital mixer for playback (and monitoring). Is there a method that would work for that particular setup? Thanks and great info on your video. All channel settings in 16.0.2 are as they are and RME input as they are. So if you select a Comp or EQ in 16.0.2, it will not effect in any of the RME channels.

The FCA1616 and many other budget Audio Interfaces only direct the analog inputs (and outputs) to USB. So there is no direct connection from input to output, other than to MAIN output 1 & 2. The same applies to ADAT in/out. Any analog signal from ADA8200 will only go to USB to a DAW, and from a DAW to ADA8200 outputs. If you set the buffer low enough, you might be able to send FCA1616 inputs 1-8 to your PC and DAW and output them to ADA8200 outputs. But, there will always be a latency. Hope that helps.

Hey everyone, I have a Steinberg UR22 (2 xlr input interface), is it possible for me to purchase a Berheinger ADA8000 @ 1:58 and use that to add extra inputs to my small interface? Or does it have to have an ADAT input, which I don't think my steinberg has

Your interface has to have ADAT in/out for ADA8000 to work.

hello sir........I'm a beginner Nd I hv a presonus ar12usb mixer Nd a focusrite 18i20.also usb.......now I will b using the focusrite interface...only...to connect my outboard gears in the DAW...Nd use d ar12usb only for recording......now d ar12 doesn't hv any adat WC port like the 18i20........so if I use two of them simultaneously.using asio4all.....will it create any audio issues while recording????

You can try and see how you go. But having no sync between devices will surely/eventually create issues when recording.

My Scarlett 18i8 only has an ADAT input. Could I use an ADAT output from another interface and connect it to the ADAT input of the Scarlett? Basically I'm asking if the lack of an ADAT out on the 18i8 keeps this from working. I don't currently have a second interface, but I need more recording channels. I did use ASIO4ALL to record a USB mic with my Scarlett 18i8 using Ableton and it did work. Still, I've never heard mixed results from this ASIO4ALL method with actual interfaces. Support doesn't seem to be guaranteed with any of the interfaces I'm looking at. Well I checked and you can choose ADAT as a clock source on the Scarlett so hopefully ASIO4ALL will do its part. Do you have any recommendations of interfaces with 8-48V XLR inputs? That Presonus you have is discontinued, and interfaces are pretty hard to find right now anyway. I've had a good experience with the Scarlett, so the 18i20 would probably be fine. I noticed the Scarlett Octopre is similar but cheaper. Are there any others in the 500$ or under category that compete with it? I don't know much about the technical specifications. Is buying used a bad idea?

Check for Behringer ADA8200 for added 8ch mic pre into ADAT of Scarlet.

@@RecordingStudio9 That's much cheaper, thanks. I'm still a little confused though. Since my 18i8 only has an ADAT in, I would have to use the clock of the ADA8200, but it doesn't have a USB output. Would all the channels of the master (ADA8200) output via USB through the slave (18I8)? And if so, do they output as separate tracks assuming ASIO4ALL works correctly? Because it was my understanding that ASIO4ALL combined the USB input of both devices at a driver level and the ADAT connection was just for clock sync.

ADA8200 connect to your 18i8 via ADAT, no USB. The extra 8 inputs from ADA8200 will appear on 18i8 USB.

Ok I understand the adat stuff, I already have focusrite 18i8 and the octopre connected for 16 channels, but I just received my replacement 18i8 that messed up and warranty covered, can I add 8 more somehow or is 16 it? Unfortunately the 18i8 only has adat in, no out. Anyone know the trick if there is one?

You can try the SPDIF connection (kzread.info/dash/bejne/mm2O2MNmXbS8hrQ.html) see if you can add even more inputs.

Hi, can you help me with this situation :) I have M-Audio ProKeys Sono 61 keyboard, which has soundcard inside, so it acts like Audio interface too. It works well as an midi keyboard, and it has guitar and microphone inputs, but as an Audio Interface, it has some problems (doesn't have phantom power, has some gain noise etc..) so I need some new and better one (I've been thinking Audient iD14). How would you suggest to connect them, since Audient iD14 doesn't have Midi inputs. 1) To have Audient iD14 as main interface (and to use M-Audio just as the midi keyboard connected with some Midi-USB cable) or 2) Just plug in Audient iD14 in USB (and leave M-Audio connected as it is now - with USB ) and to use Asio4All to hopefully runs both of them? Thank you.

Normally the Sono 61 USB driver should separate the Audio from the MIDI. So in your DAW you can select ID14 and the Audio Driver and the MIDI device as the Sono 61. If you still need to have both audio interfaces, you can use ASIO4ALL, but there might be some sync issues and there is no possible way to sync both audio devices.

If the driver detects two units and works, that would be great (let us know), otherwise, you can try this method. Possibly use the SPDIF as the clock sync to free up extra 16 inputs via the ADAT on each unit. kzread.info/dash/bejne/mm2O2MNmXbS8hrQ.html
