Twisted wire can add a degree of beauty and elegance to your jewelry designs that incorporate wire accents or details. They are especially interesting when they are patinated or include contrasting metals.
In this video, Professor John Ahr of the Online Jewelry Academy demonstrates how to work with half round wire to create a variety of twisted wire profiles. The half round wire is combined with both round and square wires to give the resulting twisted wire combination a bit of flare.

    I bought a 2 piece set of something like this in the early 70's. They were meant to be worn on either side of a narrow cuff. The shop called them "guard" bracelets for an inlayed turquoise bracelet I bought there as well. Ever since I started jewelry making I've wondered how to do this, and today you've given me the inspiration to do many things by giving me the key to this process!! Thank you for the gracious sharing of your knowledge with the world! ❤❤🤍🤍💙💙

    When the flat wire is twisted it looks like a drill bit. That could be a really cool gift for someone in construction trades. A nice looking, rugged, inexpensive bracelet that could be worn at work.

    You stated the jewelry standard is a right or clock-wise twist. As a “righty”, that is easy for me to adhere. Using your posting, I made some examples using 4-#20, 2-#14 and 2-#12. One of the wires was twisted to the left. When I combined it with the half round and twisted right, it opened up the wire. It produced a different look. Note: for best result the original twist should be to the max.

    The silver on silver looks absolutely beautiful as does the double twist! ❤️❤️❤️ My wire never looks that good when I twist it... maybe because I don't have a bench vise (I use a pen vise). I'll definitely have to try it with half round wire. Thanks for the inspiration! 👍😊

    Yes, you can make jump rings from twisted wires. But, it can be difficult to match the twist at the seam. I'm sure with a little practice you can do it. Have fun. : )

    Once you’ve made your compound twisted wire, if you want to bend it round into a bangle (torc), how do you stop the smaller wire twist from lifting off/out of the channels on the inside curve? On the outside curve, it isn’t an issue as the wire has to stretch to make the increased distance and so is pulled into the channel. However on the inside curve, because of the compression of length (the centre of the compound wire stays the same length) there is a tendency for elements to lift out, creating a possibility for snagging and also not looking too great. Any tips would be much appreciated John!

  • @OnlineJewelryAcademy

    @OnlineJewelryAcademy

    There are a couple of solutions to this problem. The first is to thoroughly anneal the compound twisted wire prior to bending. In many cases the wires will stay put if they are well annealed. Just be careful if you are using a torch to anneal the item. The thinner wires will heat up much quicker than the larger wires even though they are twisted together. But if you want to ensure that nothing moves at all, you should solder the wires together before you make your bend(s). Generally, I use medium or easy paste solder for this operation. Hard solder will work. But, it doesn't flow between the surfaces quite as well as the lower temperature solders. Good luck with your project. Thanks for your support! : )

    Cheers John, much appreciated. Thankyou for coming back to me with helpful advice...I know that feeling of annealing a compound structure and seeing more advanced colour changes in the finer elements and hoping/praying they don’t melt as you try to heat up the more substantial parts. I’m looking forwards to your follow on tutorials...helpful, thoughtful and what, I always think, is a wry sense of humour. I enjoy the way you do things!

    How does twisting affect the wires tendency to break. Is there a point where it's just too brittle?

  • @OnlineJewelryAcademy

    @OnlineJewelryAcademy

    5 жыл бұрын

    Twisting wire will work harden it. And, if you don't anneal the wire before you begin, you could break it. But, annealing the metal whenever you feel like it's getting too hard to twist should prevent breakage. Good luck with your project. Thanks for your support! : )

    Generally speaking, the gauges of the round wires used in this video were between 14 to 20 and the square wires were between 8 to 10. I'm certain that with some experimentation you'll find the gauges and twists that will suit your needs. There are many books and other videos available on this topic. Have fun making wire jewelry. 😀

    The industry prefers/likes round wire twisted to the RIGHT? Why is that John? Is LEFT turned less desirable? This is cool, thanks.

  • @OnlineJewelryAcademy

    @OnlineJewelryAcademy

    5 жыл бұрын

    The general rule in the jewelry industry is that all wire is twisted to the right. I looked this up just to be sure before we shot the video. A wire twisted to the left is fine for a custom order. But, in a workshop where there are several craftspeople working, twisting to the right is the established standard. This is so that when work is handed off from one jeweler to the next there aren't any issues that will slow down production. Have a happy holiday Gabby. Thank you for your support! : )
