Herman Beuttel-Looks like an L-4 Grasshopper. I flew in a Cub(civilian version of the grasshopper). It was fun. The pilot, a former WWII fighter pilot, although came into the end of the war and never saw air combat, flew aerobatic maneuvers.
Well, now the farmer won't have to worry about bad eggs, his chickens or the krauts burning down his farm anymore....
In my small town in rural California we had a Naval Air Station during the war. Our NAS was very small but it's the reason we have a decent little airport to this day. About 20 years after the war when I was a little kid my Grandpa and Uncle flew light planes, quite similar to the one in this show. 2 or 4 seats were the norm. They were VERY lightweight and had 80 to 110 horsepower motors. Brought back memories watching Hanley and the old pilot flying off into the sky...

13:20 1. rule at flight school. never, NEVER get near the prop when starting the engine. There were some planes visiting our airport that required to be started by a person on the prop as shown. These are always professionals because you could die. The instructors showed us material where people who did this somehow lost hands, arms or one by accident fell forward into the prop and was halfed. Thats no joke. Rick Jasons career would be ended anyway when sth would have happend. I would love to know if they thought of anything like that back then. I mean, Rick had people on the set that told him whats potentially dangerous, right? Because stuff can happen anyway... thinking about Vic Morrows "Twilight".... :/

Amazing that the Piper fired up the first time the prop was flipped. Under wartime conditions and maintenance, I wonder what the odds of that are? LOL!

Good episode.
Great series, kind of cute but weaker episode. Worst soldiers ever: can't hear a plane land a few hundred yards away, their captain is obsessed with eggs, don't notice there's gas and an American under your truck, and two officers and 6 or so soldiers can't outfight an injured pilot, a lieutenant and an old man, and are wiped out by grenades and a carbine (from a moving plane by the pilot) while the lieutenant learns to fly on uneven ground. Ok, just TV...

Wtf are you talking about ? That's an everyday thing. Hannly had it rougher many times. For combat this is a walk in the park.
That was piece of cake 🎂

randy95023 - My husband had wanted to learn to fly and started taking lessons but for some reason he never finished. He was learning on a Cessna (spelling?). He got his instructor to take me up once and it was fun. There was a booklet he was given listing all of the little local airports and county landing strips and their conditions. We had a big laugh when the strip listed for my hometown was stated as “crumbling asphalt” Makes you wonder who would want to land there.

Hardly enough "gas" to get them airborne. Plus that fuel might have been diesel or methanol, not to mention even if gas that aviation fuel in those days was over 130 octane.

The L4 had a Continental A65 engine. Burns about 4 gallons per hour....probably less. My 85 HP Continental burns 4.8 gallons per hour. There was plenty in that pail to bet them back. Designed for 80LL, it will run on automobile fuel just fine. I thought this episode was a bit silly, but the fuel thing was realistic enough.
7:38 Yes, the German is a mixed back COME TO HERRN HAUPTMANN ER HAT VERLANGEN NACH DIR; my goodness VERLANGEN that has in German expressed this way a sexual undertone ( DAS VERLANGEN = SEHNSUCHT ). Better had been KOMMEN SIE MIT ZUM HERRN HAUPTMANN ER VERLANGT NACH IHNEN. ( VERLANGEN is the basic form of the Verb bet that was improvised using some German school book as reference )

Not really convincing. Too many improbables. But a feel good episode. I have a feeling the poor farmer didn't survive in the aftermath. More a fairy tale episode than the usual reality type that made "Combat," a great series. Good to see the Kraut officer killed and the farmer spared.
I know this will sound silly: If you are absolutely outnumbered, you have a Carbine and the other injured man only has a .45, why not confiscate that rifle from the German Soldier you clubbed??? I mean, now you got 2 longer range weapons instead of those two, just my thoughts...

Hard to believe.
Most episodes Allies fire 1000 rounds at close range before hitting a German. This episode a pilot who is not used to firing a rifle fires a single shot from a moving plane and hits the German officer. Far fetched, not the best episode.
