Thanks. I mostly enjoy the end product and the feedback. Sometimes I come across a scene that I really like but it can be a bit of a chore editing these larger battles. Almost like a 2nd job! Having said that it does allow me to relive the game and I think I have learned a lot and improved my game from making these vids.

Wow. There is a lot to think about in this AAR and the one that preceded it. Here are a few preliminary thoughts in what will be only the first post from me in this thread. First, very well played and thought out game by both players. Exceptionally good. It could be called "when the right plans collide". The armor fight was intense and important, but it seems to me that the fight was actually decided on your left when you slowed and then stopped the Fallschirmjagers over a long slow fighting withdrawal. Your AA units were in my opinion your most important asset in this fight. Hard for infantry, no matter how skilled, to advance in the face of that sort of firepower. There was an incredible series of hard knocks that were tough for Nate to overcome. First the Sherman that would not die and did not cease knocking out the tanks that stalked it. Second, the one shot by the Jackson on the King Tiger. Third the dual knock out of two Brummbars by, of all things, a light tank. Just incredible, and not really something tactics can overcome. One question that has always bothered me since I started playing wargames (about 45 years ago give or take a few years) is whether light armor is worth the purchase. Recon can be done by infantry and going that route is a lot cheaper. The quick destruction of the Pumas argue against bothering with light armor, at least when heavier tanks are about and yet the Chaffees demonstrate the counterpoint. More later.

Well I can only comment on how I've interpreted the events. To get the full picture we need to get Nathan Gun's feedback. AA guns in woodland are extremely good anti infantry weapons. Much better than guns with higher calibers which fire shells with a greater explosive charge. That's because HE shells will hit trees as well as the enemy, and when they do, they cause friendly casualties. Tanks and assault guns can be bad news for you own forces when used in woodland. Even with the AA guns, I was not able to hold at either Ferme Diedenhove nor the surrounding woods. It seemed as if Nathan Gun deliberately halted any continual push into the woods as once Ferme was taken, the pressure on that flank died off. I do agree that I had some extremely good luck both with the immobilised Sherman and the Chaffee which scored a 2 for 1 hit. The Jacksons were just doing the job they are are good at, which is killing tanks with their 90mm gun. I think light armour has its uses. I think in this game, Nathan Gun expected me to be further back and my pre-emptive attack caught him by surprise.

@@joseywales3848 Great points. One thing this video makes clear is that, contrary to what is often portrayed, US (and UK) tanks were quite good vehicles. In the 'old days' of miniatures and cardboard counters the tanks of the Western Allies were often at an extreme disadvantage game wise. Now, however, such vehicles can take advantage of being hidden and can stalk German armor. One thing about Shermans...they rarely miss on their first shot. While the 75 mm gun was pretty strained by this time of the war the 76mm was still quite deadly. This video proves the value of such tanks.

The sheer destruction on the battlefield and the back and forth between the sides in addition to your excellent commentary and editing is so entertaining. What a fight. That last dash feels a bit gamey and silly though, if you ask me. If I knew the we were going to retreat in 5 minutes after losing nearly all our panzers I don't think I would obey an order to suicide charge into a farm covered by enemy tanks just so my commander can say "look, my destroyed tank and burning tank crew are "contesting" the objective! Now you can't demote me for losing, it's a draw!" Unless maybe if you were playing the soviets.

Yeah, Combat Mission could use a more flexible Capture objective system. I recall a battle I would have won were it not for a single Soviet rifleman, the last of his squad (perhaps his platoon!) huddled up on the *very* corner of a very large objective which I totally controlled...

  • @carsons5750

I'm glad somebody made this comment. A gunless, useless single unit "contesting" Grange du Chavel? c'mon... That crew is stranded and soon to be captured, not contesting anything. Capturing an objective in the last 5min should add time to the scenario (better still, only effective fighting units should count for capturing objectives), or do as some other games where time of control matters in terms of victory points.

@@slydiogenes8796 Combat Mission is really meant to be played using the WeGo system. This is a type of turn based system that is sperarated into 2 phases. The command phase allows you to give orders to your troops then in the replay phase your troops spend the next minute of game time attempting to execute those orders. It gets really tense during the replay phase as you cannot interject if things start to go wrong 10 seconds into that minute. This means that every action must be thought about carefully. You take the roles of Battalion commander, Company Commanders, Platoon Leaders, Squad Leaders and Team Leaders all in a single turn and make different decisions within each role to help achieve the objective. You go from the large scale down to the small scale. I wouldn't call it a simulation but it is extremely immersive.

Really awesome game and you showing what you were doing and why was excellent commentary that really added to the game. But I've got to say those M36 jacksons killing two king tiger H's from the front was absolute bullshit. I could accept one being destroyed by a shot to the turret but two? Get fuckkked. The KTH fought with the muster of a wet fart, if I knowingly knew they were that useless and misportrayed in this game I would take another platoon or company of panthers. At least then you get worth out of your tanks and not this joke.

Glad you like the vid. Again the reality of the M36 Jackson vs the KT is another one for the BF forums. One criticism I do come across is that the map sizes in these games force the battle to be a knife fight. The M36 in that particular incident was only about 350m away from the KT.
