Exactly, he's using some type of magical fairy dust to have this type of disciplined performance out of a paltry MLS roster that is $5 million outside of the Designated Players.

@MichaelWalker-wu2pq it's actually more like 10-11 million with GAM and TAM money, but still small.
For CCL/CCC 2004-2010 4 MLS teams made semifinals. 0 made finals. 2011-2017 7 MLS teams made semifinals. 2 made finals. 2018-2024 10 MLS teams made semifinals.5 made finals. The big picture is the league is getting there.

As a crew fan, there’s something different about this team. It’s Nancyball. I watch tons of soccer, but when I watch the crew it’s just a step above tactics wise. I’ve never seen a team so in sync with one another. (I’m a Milan fan and Nancy is 3x the manager Pioli is)

Your correct. They had an extremely easy path to the final. Then when they met a good team, they lost. It's also stupid the final was two legs. That was also the same tournament Austin lost the series to Violette. Which a few players don't play full time lol. Some guys had other jobs. It was awesome seeing as a crew fan. The team only had 3 subs on the bench and I think 7 players were not able to travel to the States. It was also the first time in over a year they played an actual game. It's probably one of the biggest upsets in concacaf
Credit to Columbus. They were undeniably superior. Now, they’re talking about MLS vs. LigaMX and comparing performances in this tournament. They fail to mention that in THIS edition MLS had almost double the representatives and all those that faced LigaMX opposition (except Crew) dropped like flies. Cincinnati, Vancouver, Philadelphia, New England, Miami, and Orlando 6 MLS teams fell directly vs LigaMX (same number as the total LigaMX representatives) vs 2 MLS wins. That’s a 6-2 score in favor of LigaMX with only the final game remaining to be played.
Columbus plays well, but they still haven’t won it! They still have to win the final. It’ll be a good match.
Tano Ortiz is the Doc Rivers of Liga MX, look what happened in apertura vs San Luis. Period point blank, Nancy is the Erik Spoelstra of MLS, he doesn't have the best roster, but he knows how to maximize his players.
Columbus is the gold standard of MLS, easily incredible
The thing is that MLS is trending upwards while LigaMX and Mexican football in general is trending downwards. How long until MLS dominates the Concacaf Champions cup? 3 years from now? 5 Years from now? It's going to happen eventually.

MLS is not consistently winning, especially in Mexico yet, but they are getting better. They will keep getting better from top to bottom too. MX's top teams will keep spending more to stay in the upper level, but the lower level of the LigaMX will lag behind, like the European leagues. Both need to get better together though.
@fastdrumming

Hopefully they do. The reason why mexican league is in decrease is because it has no competition. Its about time mls stepped up and provided some good competition in order to force liga mx to become better.
Not at all. Columbus Crew is an anomaly. They are an incredible exception to the rule. MLS is not better than Liga MX and they won't be until they raise the salary cap to something respectable like $15 million and loosen some of the roster restrictions.
@darthwiizius

The MLS won't emerge before a more matured football culture emerges in America mate. The league has come on leaps and bounds since it's inception, as demonstrated by the increasing numbers of US pros playing in European leagues such as the Premier League, Bundesliga etc. But therein lies the issue, until the culture forms and makes US football more financially comparable and pack out stadiums on every matchday like with the big Leagues across the pond your brightest talents will continue to be pulled away from your clubs. Still, there's benefits to your national side in being a supply side footballing country as your players are exposed to the best training and practices in the World. Many of those players will become the future generations of coaches carrying that experience into your domestic clubs and national team. Most of Brazil and Argentina's international players are European based, and they don't do too bad at the game.
@MichaelWalker-wu2pq
Ай бұрын
@darthwiizius I'm not suggesting MLS would ever compete against the top 5 soccer leagues in the world over in Europe. They still could be a dominant league in this region if they simply go to at least $15 million in salary cap and loosen their arcane roster restrictions.

@@MichaelWalker-wu2pq Never say never mate, if you do keep pushing up your standards it'll push up standards in the rest of North America with you, after that there's no saying where you end up. @@dovonovich I think that's achievable mate, I used to watch MLS back in the 90s (late matches from the Netherlands and the US back to back were played in full in the early hours on a UK channel (5) back then) and TBH the MLS was kind of embarrassing where now it's a mid tier league ahead of most (if not all) Asian and Oceania leagues, African leagues etc. The MLS is vastly better now than it was back then. When you get parity with all the leagues in the Americas you will be automatically somewhere around your target, after South America there are only European Leagues to catch up to, and you'll be competitive with most. The 5 plus the Dutch, Portuguese and maybe the Belgian Leagues would be your next targets.
Guys don’t call it too early… you have to lift the trophy first…being consistent and get used to win it … still it’s more like a bombastic surprise than a new normal…

The MLS and American soccer have a far greater potential for growth and development than the Mexican league. The Mexican league has always been very self contained and poorly administered, for that they have reached a ceiling of development. if the people running the MLS are smart and take this opportunity (having messi, the copa america and world cup), it's the perfect time to boost the MLS to new heights.
Then the MLS is making progress. On another subject you talked about last night. You could argue that the MLS could continue to expand a few more teams just based on the country's size and cities' population compared to all of Europe (not counting Russia).

Yes it is.
Having the best team in MLS compete with Liga MX is an exception and not the rule. There's still way to go.
In terms of total points accumulated from international competitions, Liga MX still has a stranglehold on the top 3 spots. MLS is making moves further down the list. MLS as a whole has picked up Way more points in total and moved far more teams up in the rankings. This is a process, and steps one and two have been accomplished. Step three is to take over those top spots, though, and it will take awhile to get anyone in there. It's coming, though. We can say we did it when those top three spots are ours. Right now though, Liga MX has those spots and there's a long distance between third and fourth place.

I’m a crew fan and you can’t say that the crew were last mls team standing we need to be able to compete more consistently then you can maybe say it l.
That commentator was about to start crying. MLS is getting there. Takes time.
As a league, definitely not and by a long shot. Are a few teams making a breakthrough, yes.
I dont believe MLS has toppled LIGA MX until we see 50% or greater MLS teams entering the semi finals for 2 or more consecutive years. Once we see this, I will say that yes. A lot of MLS teams lost this year, that can’t happen if you want to turn the tide.
dumb question... how is it determined where each leg is played? It just seems like the 2nd leg is always in Mexico... TIA

In the semifinals, the winner of 1-vs-8 faces the winner of 4-vs-5, with the 1-vs-8 winner hosting the second leg, and likewise 2-vs-7 plays 3-vs-6, with the 2-vs-7 winner hosting the second leg. In the finals, the team that prevails out of the upper bracket of 1-8-4-5 hosts the second leg.
@PalBroFella

From the beginning of the knock out round, the teams earn 3 points per win and 1 point per draw after 90 minutes. The team with more accumulated points plays the 2nd leg at home. In this case, most Mexican teams won more points than the MLS teams throughout the tournament, therefore earning them playing the 2nd leg in home soil. And the final will be played in Pachuca because they earned more points than Columbus throughout the tournament.
Crew have been playing well, but they still have one more CONCACAF game. Focus on that.
Not even close Liga MX controls the area
No not at all not till it’s a consistent thing year by year but we are closing the gap. Hate how pundits over hype our league it’s still no where near where it should be

Toppled? Liga MX have knocked out how many teams? Also, let's not pretend that Concacaf does everything to money grab with any Mexico vs USA competitions they can make. To do this they have to make us believe that MLS is just as good as Liga MX. Least not pretend that CONCACF pumps in MLS teams into this competition.
That's a trick question, with multiple answers depending on exactly how one defines a league as superior. Top to bottom, club versus club, it's close. I can abide an argument in either direction. In terms of history, pedigree, and the importance of each league within its home country's sporting landscape, there's no question that Liga MX is by far the bigger fish. If it's a question of league trajectory, MLS is far better. If it's a question of global importance and prestige, club value, television rights revenue, desirability as a destination for high value incoming transfers, and success of outbound transfers in top European leagues, MLS is again by far the better of the two. Simply saying one is better than the other without clarification of precise meaning, is a reckless and lazy argument.
No because every mls team except Columbus got turned over by liga mx teams
first you have to defeat the only good couch in the entire Mx Ligue. Columbus defeated the most expensive teams in Mx. Pachuca is worth half of that, you will get it.

MLS: has every single qualified team except 1 get eliminated by MX without a single game win. Columbus: Does well. As a Crew fan, I don't understand this mentality of MLS vs Liga MX. I care about the Crew winning, and as far as I'm concerned the Crew are better than every team in Liga MX at this point. They have to come on the field and prove they are better than the Crew. If Pachuca wins then it'll probably be because they deserve it but I don't see how they could be favored going into the final. The Crew should be the favorite. I will never understand this group mentality either side has. Are you a Liga MX fan or a Chivas fan? Would you root for America to win this championship? Why? Why would FC Cincinnati root for the Crew? That's stupid.
