join plenty of clubs!! there you can meet people who you already know you have something in common with. and for starting conversations, i always start with asking someone in my class about the homework or continuously ask about a coffee shop worker's day.. stuff like that helped me a lot.

thank you so much for this advice, i really appreciate it!! talking to people in classes has definitely helped and i've also been able to join a couple of clubs which has been great for making new friends

I applied to Columbia University. I hope I get in. I'm afraid I will get nervous being away from home. Do you have any advice?

Good luck on your application! It's definitely normal to feel homesick, sad, afraid, and/or nervous when you're away from home. My advice is to call home often, spend time exploring the city/college you're at, and stay in touch with friends and family members from home.
