    Nice. I have the 4 1/2 in 1849 Pocket from CBPAC and the 1848 model from Colt. I have the CBPAC WH Dragoon also. The 1849 pocket and the dragoon go together. They re a companion pair really. Good job!

    I wish I had gotten a little more shooting in, but that's a relatively minor gripe. I can't help but think I could force 20 grains of FFFg and a ball into the cylinder for that other test we did. I don't know if it would have made much of a difference, though.

    Great review! That little pistol is a beauty. Seems to be accurate as well! Interesting way of seating the ball, I was wondering how you were going to go about it, and it seems to work well, but a little annoying as you said. Again, great video!

    Yeah. This 31 was by far the one closest to the point of aim, just a few inches high. I was going to bring a plastic hammer and a hickory dowel to seat the balls, but apparently seating with the arbor was the historically correct way of doing it. It is not as bad as I thought, but reloading takes a while, even by percussion revolver standards.

    This one is about two or three inches. The 1849 was about 12 inches high. When I had a Remmie Pocket it was a good 18-24 inches high. Had to aim at the groin to strike a chest shot.

    The Colt Pocket models like this one and the 1849 were Colt's most popular offerings, even against government contracts for the bigger 36 and 44 caliber guns. A lot of soldiers snapped them up. Since Jesse started his gun career as a Confederate bushwacker, he might have been familiar with these.

    I have an ancient video on the Remington Pocket. The one I had shot extremely high, something like two feet high at ten yards. It also holds only about ten grains of powder. These 1849 Pocket and 1848 Babies hold fifteen to twenty grains and all the examples I shot printed close to the point of aim.

    I have a ballistics gel video on cap and ball revolvers that you might like. I also have an article with the numbers. The 31 is definitely at the bottom with energy like that of a 25 ACP. The 36, even out of a pocket gun, is like a 380 but with a heavier bullet, and 44s are running anywhere from 38 Special to 357 Mag energies depending on whether you go with one of those big Dragoons or Walkers. www.ammoland.com/2019/01/the-power-of-black-powder-revolvers-black-powder-vs-substitutes/#axzz6JMnZiQSj

    @@watchoutnwo You can get a 45 Long Colt cylinder to put into that 58 New Army. Or even a 45 ACP cylinder. Howell sells them. Only for steel frame percussion revolvers, not brass frame. 38 special cylinders fits 58 Navy .36. 32 S&W cartridges fit the Remington baby. They usually just drop right in, no alterations needed.

    why not? that was what Colt originally marketed it as. I prefer the pocket Remington reproductions personally, but the colt design works more or less as well. If you use Conical bullets, the .31 pistols are close to .32 ACP and .32 S&W, the .36 are close to .380 and .38 S&W, and the .44 are roughly equivalent to .45 S&W (all of which are perfectly capable for self defense, despite what the "tactical-timmy's" out there claim today). To paraphrase a quote from everyone's favorite spy: "if you pump 5-6 .32 caliber slugs into it and it acts like nothing happened, it's clearly a dragon". I know it's not a revolver, but my "deer pistol" is a single shot .36 that I load with 50gr of 3F and a 158gr cast wadcutter lol don't discount the old stuff just because it's not advertised much anymore.

    The gun in the video is some kind of hybrid, but what distinguishes the Uberti Baby Dragoon from the Uberti Wells Fargo are the cylinder notches: Wells Fargo uses square notches with lead-in slots, while the Baby Dragoon uses an oval-shaped cylinder slot. What makes the gun in the video unusual is that it has a round trigger guard (Baby Dragoons should have a square-back). Historical Colt versions of these guns were different in that the Baby Dragoon had a shorter frame: It was never designed to load on the gun (so there was no gap between cylinder face and barrel) whereas the Wells Fargo is just an 1849 with a deleted feature. Uberti cheaped out by giving their Baby Dragoon the same longer frame as the 1849/Wells Fargo.

    I think the arbor is much more efficient. But if you want ultimate convenience, a specialized loading stand would be the ultimate setup. I don't believe in lugging such a thing to the range, though. And you can't really buy one in a caliber this small. It would have to be made.

    It might be "slow" by modern standards, but it still represented a 500% increase in firepower. Also .31 might look odd to us but a 9mm is only between a .35 & .38. and in those days modern medical care didn't exist. Being shot though the body was almost certainly a death sentence, and being gut shot was certain death in 2-3 days from perontitis unless your incredibly strong and lucky. I suspect that most confrontations stopped when a pistol was presented at someone.

  • @professorpewpuew

    I believe so, but when people see the reloading process, they fret about how they did it in combat. Well, it was common practice to carry more than one revolver at the time... because of that reloading handicap. I think the 31 is surprisingly deadly. We got it into ballistics gel. Should have it on the channel in a few days.

    Uberti doesn't make squareback trigger guards for pocket guns anymore, so they slap the round guard on their Baby Dragoons now. What separates a Baby Dragoon from a Wells Fargo these days are the cylinder notches: Oval on the Baby, square+leads on the 1849/Wells Fargo.

  • @BogeyTheBear

    @BogeyTheBear

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@wildrangeringreen The Wells Fargo was a customized variant of the 1849 Pocket, not the Baby Dragoon. The original Baby Dragoon has a shorter frame and forcing cone-- there is virtually no gap between the cylinder and barrel. The 1849 has a lengthened frame to provide room for you to fit and ram a bullet into the chambers while the gun is assembled, the Wells Fargo is the same long frame but with the loading gear omitted. Why does the Baby Dragoon in the video have a gap betwen the cylinder and barrel then? Simple-- Uberti didn't want to make any extra parts just for Baby, so their replicas use the 1849 frame instead of the historically correct short frame.
