Colouring Polymer Clay With Paint Experiment

Hi everyone! Watch in HD :)
I thought it was about time to once and for all answer the age old question, "can polymer clay be coloured with paint? "
In this little experiment I try out a few different types of paint to see if it can be done and compare all of the results to find a winner!
Thank you for watching!

Adding oil to the polymer clay will definitely make it softer, because it works as a solvent. and the oil you add will change the temperature at which the clay hardens, that's why it remained soft after baking. (I'm a chemist & Artist). I enjoyed your videos, they're so straight to the point and really helpful especially for a beginner.

I use pastels to make my own clay colors. I'll mix the chalk pastels in and there's hardly any staining! It saves a ton of money because the colors come out quite nice with the super Sculpey beige. Then just use white for any bright yellow or whites that you need!

FYI: Painting after baking only adds a thin layer of pigment sitting on top of the baked clay. If the final piece is not varnished, the paint could be scratched and come off. Mixing paint into the clay, on the other hand, locks in the pigment deep inside the clay during the baking process. Therefore, no varnishing will be required, unless you want to change the finish, say to add glossiness. All in all, there is a point to coloring clay before baking.

My mom sent a lot of them to him once (I think she found a sale lol) and I think I still have one not even opened yet. I may have to try it without adding water and see what happens. Ive had good luck coloring white Fimo , and the flesh toned Sculpey original, with acrylic paints and colored sidewalk chalk. With the chalk i ground it on sandpaper, but this method doesnt make vibrant colors. Its more of a light pastel. I prob use about the same amount of acrylic paint as you used, though i stick mine in a plastic bag, and wear gloves, to mix the color in. Then i always let it sit for at least 24 hrs before using. But longer seems to hold the color better while baking. Ive never had any issues with bubbling. I need to try the oil paint method it seems to give the best color IMO. I think yours bubbled because the outside of the clay bakes really fast sealing it, as the inside bakes the excess moisture cant escape. so it bubbles up. I think allowing them to rest a day or two so the excess moisture evaporates it might stop the bubbles.

Polymer clay is a polyvinyl chloride, a plastic-based material... so it only makes sense that you would get bubbles with acrylic paint, which is water based. You can also add fragrances to polymer clay like essential oils and certain spices like ground cinnamon. (no food extract oils as it can affect the quality of your project) Happy Crafting! 🙂

TIP: Polymer clay can only be painted on after it’s been hardened in the oven.

That works better, but I still would not add too much, because it might affect the strength of the clay. Make some tests :)

Isn’t that make sens ? Polymère clay is based on oil, so I would assume that even thought I have not much of experience, but what even more interesting it’s the extra flexibility it’s add. I à making figurines and for clothe or hair that’s just amazing thanks for your research

I have seen Japanese people put acrylic paint into their clay pieces, but they use an air dry clay. I was wondering what'd it be like with Polymer clay and tried it, thank you! Seems very messy :p

The reason that the palette watercolor clay was crumbly was because when the water dried, it was basically just the dry, crumbly pigment left.

You might have better results with a higher pigment acrylic paint, like those for painting miniature models.

It's hard to get the exact color when used on white polymer clay and lots of paints get wasted on the hand and by the time u get the desired color, the clay becomes crumbly and keeps staining the pasta machine while conditioning. Better option i found is to paint the final product with acrylic paint, leave the piece to dry completely for a day and then bake. I came to this conclusion after mixing 1 block (400gm) of white clay with different acrylic colors for them to come out pale after baking 😭
