Colourful Dandelion Macro Photography (+ Bonus Aphids!)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this flower photography tutorial, we are photographing the ever-popular Dandelion. These are prolific flowers as we enter the summer months, and great to shoot in macro, especially when you add some colour!
Unlike our macro photography tutorial playlist, in this series, we are setting out to explore the photographic possibilities of different flowers and plants. We will be using different lighting methods and looking at ideas and inspiration for composition too!
In this flower photography tutorial, we are using coloured background cards and Adaptalux Studio lighting to make our dandelion photos pop. We encounter some surprise aphids and use water to add some additional interesting features to the dandelion clocks.

Hi Ben, great video. I’ve tried this subject over summer, they are so fragile (and messy) but lots of interesting details. I spayed with tonic water and lit with UV ... results varied. Also off topic when I was shooting garden flowers under UV long exposure, I also found they housed tiny creatures so most photos had little bug streaks ! Andrea (Australia)😁

To better protect delicate flower stems I hold the tubing with the aligator clips then insert the stem into the free end of the tube. The benifit is absolutely no damage to the stem, the downside is a little less controll over the position of the bloom.

That's a good way of doing it! I think the straw I had a was a little too narrow to hold a stem but it's a good idea for next time, thanks!

  • @Adaptalux

    4 жыл бұрын

Hi Claudia, We do ship to Switzerland. For beginners, i'd probably recommend a starter pack which comes with 2 arms of your choice, so you can have white and colours if you wish. It depends a lot on your personal preference and the subjects you would like to shoot. Check out some of our other videos, there's lots of inspiration on which arm combinations might suit your style!

Pradipta Datta the actual head is known as a head or clock, the individual sections are called dandelion seeds. Called a clock as people used to blow them and think they would tell the time ! I was born and brought up in the countryside so I’m used to the old tales and blown a few trying to tell the time 🤦‍♀️😂
