Colour Perception: Identifying The Colour You Want To Mix

Identifying colours is surprisingly difficult! And yet it is a key skill in being able to mix paint...
In this video I give you a framework for both describing colours and for mixing them. You will learn about hue, saturation, value, tint, shade and tone - all backed up with practical demonstrations. There are also a few challenges for you as well!
In the second half of the video I show you a clear worked example of how to explore and learn about a colour. I use lemon yellow, but you can do the same exercise with any hue. Some things don't work first time, but I show you how to recover from these. I also touch on how words can actually be unhelpful when trying to 'see' colours.
All this information will equip you to systematically improve your painting and mixing skills. If you have any questions about anything just post a comment and I will do my best to help!

I have just come across your videos Ian. Thankyou so much for posting this, it explains everything so clearly to me. I have been painting on and off for many years and no one has ever explained these concepts as logically as you have. I can’t wait to get home and practice! Thankyou

As a very very beginner color is a real challenge for me. I’ve been struggling to find tutorials that would really guide me to a way of learning, and hopefully I found your videos. This is a real support. Do you always paint with this kind of vertical palette? What support do you use in this videos. A drawing table vertical? Wood? Plywood? Thank you for these teaching time you spend for our greatest pleasure!

Brgigtte Mathey Thanks for your comment. The vertical palette is just so viewers can see me and my palette at the same time. I use an old architects table turned vertical. A sheet of glass is taped onto it which is easy to clean.

Hi Ian, how do you reduce (or increase) the value of a colour without losing colour intensity/chroma? Very confused about how to adjust value but maintain the same colour intensity. Are these two different techniques?

When you darken the intensity is always less. However when you lighten some of the dark cool hues with a small amount of white the intensity increases. Eg viridian, French ultramarine blue. Prussian blue, Phthalo blue.
