Colossal Squid - How This Scientist Would Find it

Ғылым және технология

Sperm whales and submarines and squid, oh my!
The colossal squid is the world's largest invertebrate. It can grow to 14 meters long (46 feet) and weigh over 500 kg (~1,000 lbs). Scientists don't know very much about them, because they are rare, elusive, and live at depths below 1,000 m (3,200 feet) in the waters around Antarctica. Only a few specimens have ever been observed by scientists, usually as bycatch in deep-sea fisheries. We asked marine scientist Nathan Robinson to design his dream mission using all the capabilities of our ship the #OceanXplorer. His answer? Find and observe a living colossal squid in the wild.

I truly hope you do! I have always loved following ocean discoveries and even the old myths around this animal. TBH my fear of the ocean is in part due to how little we know of it, and what lives in the depths. The rest is from submechnophobia, so only shallow water for me. Huge Thank you for what you do!!
