As a beginner to coloring I have watched a lot of tutorials and have learned more from this site than any other. I hope you return to this channel.

I know this was done five months ago but thank you so much for showing close up when you’re coloring. That helps me so much. It’s beautiful!

I did the same girl with green hair and purple eyes. but when it comes to light source I use the light shine in her eyes to determine where it is coming from. I love the way you colored her.

I have a page in progress in the same book close to the beginning of the book. It's the one with the creatures on her head. I made the hair soft green and aqua with pale yellow highlights. I colored her highlights first too!. I gave her lips and eyes more definition than the line work indicated. I used a couple of blush tones on her lips for contour. The eyes don't have pupils or irises on that illustration, but I colored in a way to create them without adding line work. I started the octopus with soft purples, but quit there at bed time. I picked up this book for similar reasons you mentioned. I'm not fond of how often octopus shows up, but those faces are compelling. A small book I picked up on Amazon is Enchanted Faces by Hannah Lynn. It's pocket size is great for a less demanding session. The paper is good, not terrific, but not bad either. It even works for alcohol markers since the printing is on one side.

There is a peta hewitt video about colouring a face that is fantastic for realistic skin and contouring. I also use the make up idea to do faces... love the page and its more than ok

I love the red hair! My younger sister and 2 of her kids all have red hair too. I check out the highlights and shadows in their hair when I color red hair. You called out a couple pencils I'll need to try next time. I am having a problem with getting my skin colors to blend together smoothly. I have seen some pictures where the skin looks flawless and rich. Mine? Not so much.

Diane Knuckles, when you see that flawless skin, they are very likely using Luminance pencils, or even Colorfin Pan Pastels with pencils. Then the other times, they have just been coloring for a very long time, lol.

I truly WISH there were more artists in the tractional art making world to be on DeviantArt! It's in dire need of different media of art and artist! Lately, there has only been a surge of digital/computer art only, 3D, etc. and I don't understand why that is?? No excuse, there should always be a diverse nature of art and certainly of course artist. I hope to see beautiful art works of every nature, traditional, knitting, sculpting on Devinart. I had a lot of fav artists in every direction, spectrum of art and it's like they either left of traded their skills to computer art. It's the same with the clubs, the artists making clubs are more into to themselves than generalizing it for everyone as to specific, general categorizing.

I also struggle with skin. I just can't seem to get that right combination of colors. I keep practicing though! I love the way your picture turned out though. Hey! I know this comment is old but in case you or anyone else happens upon this comment, I just wanted to share what worked for me. Honestly hair and skin are probably some of the things I'm finally really good at. It took a ton of practice. But most of it came from makeup. I have a background in theatrical makeup. So understanding shadows, highlights contour, skin texture, and undertones from matching makeup to skin shades. If you find yourself stuck, jump on to a website (more high end, or another one I use is PUR's website because they have SO MANY shades and use men and women of all ages and races. Not supermodels) and check out their foundation match tools. It'll show you ranges of skin shade values. Undertones etc. And then once the photos are side by side it's much easier for our eyes to see the minute differences in hues and colors that make up faces. It's such a big help for me personally. It helped normalizing using pink or blue or yellow or olive colored pencils when making layers for skin in my pictures. It helped to be able to pick out a shadow that was a gray-violet tone. And then I grabbed a ton of portrait only sets for watercolor, watercolor pencils a d regular pencils and after switching them I tried layering them all just in hues and values with no human face shape just try to get my eye and mind to familiarize itself and recognize different tones and shadow and highlights. I have a ton of amazing brands, but by far the best portrait tone pencil sets I got were the Black Widow light set and dark set, and the Derwent Coloursoft skin tone set (6 ct.) All of these things together helped me a lot but everyone is different. I hope some of this can help you or someone else with some ideas. ❤

Hair, skin, trees and bushes

Well I wanna say that I am working and I might Peacock and what should I do with all the leaves in the background like the right to that those big huge flowers am I having to traveling with

Are those tentacles, like on an octopus?

I have a strange question. Michaels has the 150 set of prismacolor premiere soft cores for like $180, when I searched for them on amazon they are only about $98...any idea on why the huge difference in price?

Its because Michael's usually has a 40 percent off of non-discounted items coupon that brings the price down to the acceptable range. Thats what I think is the cause of that anyway

Skin...avoid all pictures with faces. Backgrounds! Usually leave them blank.

Skies, skin, eyes, and water are the worst for me.
