I spent the summer in Como around 1962. We lived in a house that had a coal shed behind the house. My mother cooked on a wood stove that also burned coal. There was rhubarb growing on side of the house and I remember some of the local children scolding me for picking a columbine flower. I was about 8 years old at that time. My dad used to work in the timber industry but I didn't see many trees in the video. I think I would like to visit there again.

Loved this! We were in Breckenridge last week. We were looking for hiking trails and took Borealis Pass. I had no idea that the entire road was originally a narrow gauge rail line until we got to the top and read the historical marker. So I followed it on down and wound up where you are here. There was no one around, but i could tell some amazing work had gone into restoring all of this. Would be great if they could keep expanding the track along that Borealis road. Great video!

While the length of track from roundhouse to depot is minimal, it's longer than the approximate 600-feet of rail CBS built in the mid 1990s at Paramount Ranch near Agoura, California for the Colorado Springs train on "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman" series. (Just thought I'd throw in that Colorado - Hollywood connection.) In response to Lineshaftrestorations gripe about No. 4 not being a real train, "how did you miss the boxcar?!" Might I add, the aged wood and paint made it a brilliant shade of red that I think only Colorado's high altitude sunshine can create. Along with the green surroundings, blue sky, white clouds and black engine & tender, well, that is quite a palette! Congrats to all the volunteers for what you've achieved. And thanks to the assembled musicians for adding to the historic event. I wish all involved success with a repeated event this summer, 2018. And trust Spirit Forest and brood will provide a welcome, follow-up report. Long live No. 4!

Thanks! I use to ride my bike through Boreas & down to Como back in the '80s: even if one isn't a history fan or RR 'Nut', some of the best rides & hikes one can have are these old narrow gauge routes with the scenic, gentle grades. but winds through those treeless valleys some times was like being up on a ridge above the treeline.... Always figured someday, folks would do some restoration, glad to see it happen -- Maybe one day the tracks will get to the pass and down to the D.&S.P. Rotary Snow plow in Breckenridge.

You should visit The Union Pacific Steam Shop in Cheyenne, Wyoming during Depot Days. My family emigrated here from East Frisia and Köln in 1893.

This has got be one of my favourites, I find Steam engines fascinating! (Might be biased towards the fact I'm an engineer, and that it reminds me of Back To The Future 3). This is a great video :D

Love these old locomotives! In fact, the first one I ever road on was the cog railroad to Pikes peak. As the kids grew up, any vacations that offered an old steam locomotive, we would make sure to ride. Nice vid. Thank you!

My dad loved trains. I lost him when I was 19, so when I see them, I think of him. So now I love trains.

Sooo cool, I love Boreas pass!,

I am a new follower. It is so cool that you like steam trains as I do also. My grandfather was an engineer on steam then diesel engines. He retired from the railroad after 42 years. He worked on the route from Ft Worth Tx to Denver.

It was a blast and they will do it again this year.. I must be there.

It must have been extremely hard to swing a spike maul. The tip of those things look only marginally larger than the tie they are driving. Really enjoyed this.

Having driven a lot of spikes at the Colo. RR Museum and on the Georgetown Loop RR., It is not all that hard. Must have a good teacher first, then setting your feet correctly, Then make sure you don't wonder with the spike maul. A little practice, should be able to drive a spike in 4 or 5 blows on the spike and not miss.

Nice video Spirit. Great job documenting it's history also. I bet that was some tiring work for the volunteers trying to lay all that track the old fashioned way. It makes for a nice tourist attraction though.

liteconduit This old railroad is so loved by so many....Wouldn't it be a dream come true if millions could be raised by rich and not so rich, to restore this railroad? So many billions of dollars are squandered on stupid politically motivated garbage and other less worthwhile things. "If we build it they will come"...and pay to ride! Young and old could experience things from our culture and learn of the hard work, sacrifices and rewards in the history of our state, now hidden and forgotten along this route. Too bad Platte Canyon is flooded, but most of the old rail bed still exists. Many want this. Just talk to the residents of Como and other little towns along the route. Put this on a Colorado ballot and watch it get voted in. Much of the hard work of preparing the rail bed was done 150 years ago. Start the line near Bailey and run over Kenosha Pass to Como, then maybe over Boreas Pass. It would be great if a new line could also be run back through South Park and scenic Trout Creek Pass again, which comes out into the Arkansas Valley with the beautiful Collegiate peaks in view. And, just think about restoring that route up along Chalk Creek, Mt. Princeton and the hot springs, to St. Elmo and on to the Alpine tunnel eventually. Just a dream, but I bet it would be great for tourism, revitalize those areas and get folks outdoors.

I think about this all the time.. wouldn't it be awesome.. Maybe some billionaire will donate and we can at least bring a train over the pass to Breckenridge. However, very dangerous with these steam trains.. need to add more safety measures.

Oh yes.. LOVE trains.. I get goose bumps hearing them. Such a big part of US history. :) I am trying to find a way to help volunteer to help these guys out. they ought to use white flags in front because it is a special train or non-scheduled train :) maybe I am wrong, please correct me if I am wrong :)

Sorry honey but there area rounhouses and turntables in colorado's DURANGO and Where Colorado RR Museum is located and one in Antonito too.

How many safety violations can you see in this video, good grief !! I would have NEVER allowed guys down in the pit to turn the unit.

It is an original whistle from a Colorado & Southern locomotive that actually ran in Como back in the day. I think it's from #75 but I'm not 100% sure I'm remembering that correctly.
