Colorado Sugar Beet Harvest - 2022

Harvesting Suage Beets in northeast Colorado.
In this video I am out in the field with a family farm from Colorado as they harvest their 2022 sugar beet crop. In this video I show filmed the entire process and first up is a John Deere 8R 250 tractor pulling an Amity 3550 Defoliator that mows and shreds the tops off of the sugar beets. Then they come along with their John Deere 8RX 310 tractor pulling an Amity 2500 harvester. this harvester digs the beets up out of the ground and side loads them into a semi truck. Also in the video you will see a John Deere 8410 tractor with a 3 point hitch mounted disk to smooth out the pivot irrigation tracks and help push trucks out of the field. Also I ride along with one of the truck drivers as they haul a load of beets down to the town of Sterling Colorado where they will be stored on a pile then later processed.

    In Russia, I remember how we manually harvested the beets and loaded them into the tractor bucket so that the tractor would load the truck. It was terrible.

    I always enjoyed sugar beet harvest in Moses Lake Washington back in the 1960's when Dad grew them Many changes since then. 6 row topping unit back then and a two row John Deere Lifter Into 2 and 3 ton straight trucks. Thanks again Mike.

    Awesome. I Used to cultivate beats as a teenager for my grandpa and uncles on the family farm. Many hours in the seat before autosteer was a thing. That was 30 years ago. So neat to see a sugar beat video on your channel. Thanks!

    Great video, back in the day we used mostly straight trucks because semi's got stuck when loaded. Plus, we used beet carts when we had no trucks. We did not have to wait for trucks to come back..

    Near Greely Colorado I drove beets from the harvest to the great piles. In mid winter I drove the molasses from Greely plant to Scots Bluff. The Walmart at Stirling, when it was brand new, was our sleeping spot often as we hauled loads out of Kodac at Winsor CO going to Rochester NY.

    8 rows under a center pivot in some excellent ground. Yeah it better be full. I used to farm there. It's amazing how much premium farm ground is gone. Covered with houses and structures. Can't seem to get people to build on shit land and farm the good. Oh well when it bites them hard in the backside I'll be long gone.

    15:08 Those are vents running through the piles. Too hot can cause rot (fermentation) to begin, which consumes sugar. Freezing can be an issue, but typically too hot is the greater concern.

    The ground appears damp. I’m amazed the loaded semi’s don’t get stuck. How heavy are they when loaded?

  • @ShainAndrews

    @ShainAndrews

    Жыл бұрын

    Heavy. Overloaded heavy is not uncommon. That's why they keep the tractor close when they start getting full. As long as they keep moving it isn't an issue. If they stop though... Well they should back up then take a run at it or get a push from a tractor.

    Those pipes they had in the piles of sugar beets. Were they just to blow cool air on them to keep them dry & cool because I know they rot fast if wet & warm.

  • @ShainAndrews

    @ShainAndrews

    Жыл бұрын

    Keep the pile cool. Probably not running them right now, but you install them regardless. Get some rot/fermentation started the factory looses money because they already sampled the sugar percentage and paid the farmer based on that. Any loss in the pile is all on the factory. They will also blow straw onto the piles to keep them warm enough to not freeze.
