What a class act by Joe Sakic. Giving the stanley cup to Bourque before raising it up himself. Sakic knew how bad Bourque wanted that cup. There will never be another leader like Sakic.

Honestly that era was the most boring era in the sport's history. Most of the games were low-scoring, trap-dominated, clutch-and-grab garbage and there were only like 4 teams capable of winning the Cup. Also the rules sucked. You would hook and pull people down no problem, but god forbid you passed the puck over 2 lines. It's a shame that so many of the greats were forced to play with that awful strategy and rules. 2005-06 was the beginning of something wonderful. More goals, more speed and skill, more parity thanks to the salary cap, and no more clutch-and-grab BS.

I was so lucky to grow up in Colorado playing hockey during this time. I got to play against Bourque and Roy’s sons, meeting both of them along with Sakic and getting their autographs. Those are memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life.

The level of respect for Bourque, and the class of Sakic captured in the moment when Sakic hands the cup to Bourque without first raising it himself is awe inspiring. All of us that witnessed this live may never see another moment like that again.

Sad part is, they were SO freaking close to a bunch more. 1997 Flyers? Would have crushed them. 1999 Sabres? Would have wiped the floor with them. 2002 Hurricanes? Puhleeze....the 1996 Finals would have looked competitive by comparison. The 2000 Devils were the only team that would have had a shot against the 1996-2002 Avs...the Avs would have wiped the floor with the 1998 Capitals as well, but I'm only counting the times they lost in the WCF to the Stars or the Wings. The "just one step short" years. Could have easily been 5 cups in 7 years.

I've been a diehard Bruins fan my whole life and when I look back on this moment I realize it gives me the chills more than the Bruins winning the cup did 2 years ago. Don't know if it's Thorne's call compared to Emrick sounding like he was going to fall asleep, or the fact that Vancouver's play completely cheapened the feel of winning, or what, but this moment is my favorite in the NHL.

I get teary eyed watching this shit. It was an amazing time to be a Colorado fan. I was only 7, watched every game of the playoffs that year. There was so many moments of that series that were incredible. Stephan Yelle and his overtime goal against the blues. Going game 7 against the kings and coming out as winners. And this. This was game 7- sudden death. They were down in the series 3-2 before game 6. It felt like they weren't going to win at times, but they pulled it off.
