As a former Image & Color Consultant in NYC for 17 yrs, I'm going to add my 2cents for consideration. What Jen is teaching are GUIDELINES & its best not to try to be so specific. If you feel a bit confused when purchasing Clothing, you have to consider other factors that influence the way a color READS. The finish of a Fabric effects the way light reflects i.e. a Shiny, SILK will read a bit different than a WOOL in the same color- one is more reflective, one absorbs more light. PATTERN also influences Color - Large Prints, Small Prints, Sharp Geometrics vs. Softer Shapes, etc. CONTRAST is also important. While Brown is usually not a flattering color on a Dark Haired, Cool Undertoned Woman (Brown REFLECTS unflattering shadows & can give a sallow appearance) but if she CONTRASTS the Brown - wears a sharp Color of equal Value near her Face, she can usually get away with it. COLOR is a wonderful TOOL in which to help begin to build a Wardrobe but you simply have to consider many other Elements to look your polished best! As far as the Cosmetic World, forget the "names" & just try them on! For Foundation, choose 3 tones, apply 3 stripes along the jawline, blend & then GO LOOK IN NATURAL LIGHTING. The one that blends & disappears is the RIGHT MATCH. I worked for Revlon International when they began color coding cosmetics 25 yrs ago & Names change all the time because they rename a color & re-market it another season. Use these Color Guides as just that, a GUIDE. You will go nuts trying to make everything ABSOLUTE across the Board. These are great Color Videos as they apply everywhere from Fashion to Art to Interiors etc. Enjoy! Its a wonderful System that will save you $ in the long run. Hope my Tips help. Good Luck!

Would someone who is cool and with pinkish skin, still be able to handle the brown with red added? I would think the red would go well with pink tones? Like Rose brown for example.

Jen, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE YOUR VIDEOS! I am so in love with colour theory since finding your Videos. I have been on a journey to find the perfect shade to match my mousey brown eyebrows. 😅😅 Because I hate a really overly done brows, but mine do need a lil somethin' sonethin' because my brows fade into the background when I do certain eye looks. Are cool browns only made with the blue added.

Contradiction? Great videos Jen but in the last slide above you show yellow added to make brown cool (vs red to make it warm). Doesn't this contradict the earlier slide where you add yellow (vs blue) to make brown warm?? And isn't it also contradictory because the colour wheel shows yellow in the warm half of colours??

What does it mean if I suit yellow-browns but not red-browns? I know they are both warm browns, but I look ill with red-browns. Does this give me hints about what other colours would make me look ill?

I am so happy with this video. You are always informing Jen. Thanks a lot! .. I am cool/winter and would never wear brown because I still believe that brown even neutral is still warm and I absolutely don't like it on me. However for makeup I think a brown crease is flattering on everyone even on cool undertones but then I balance my look and choose a cool undertone color for my lid color ... and for contour a grayish brown is what I go for that's how I use brown personally 💟💟💟 I have noticed that some makeup companies call a yellow brown (cool) which is different from what you have explained and they call red brown (warm) ... which is weird to me since I think both are warm

Was it supposed to say “warm” on that last pic? You said yellow added to brown makes it warm. Is yellow ever cool? Just clarifying, thanks!

Yellow is on the warm side of the color wheel. It is also a universal color. Yellow is considered a warm color but it can be cooled down a bit by adding white, grey or black. Adding yellow to brown warms up the brown. A yellow-brown or golden brown is always warm. Hope that helps.

Red is not necessarily warm though, it's really neutral in color, just like brown is, red can go either way.

I’ve taken numerous quizzes that say I am either soft autumn or warm autumn and I’m confused because my hair is a deep dirty caramel blonde but I was born with bright red hair so my hair comes off soft but in the light it’s very warm which has me confused on my coloring. I have cooler toned skin and olive green eyes. Help!

I prefer the cooler as my base. The warmer tones I love when I want a more pronounced brown. What does that mean? Am I cooler? Or warmer? An old it's + red for me instead of yellow

Can you do one with green + red with the white and black scale? I am see this for the sake of skin undertones. I notice that in all my foundations I have to add green primer to create the perfect match for my skin. All of foundations look too orange, pink or yellow for me. None which say "neutral" have that greenish made neutral. They are all made with red + yellow, blue + red, or green + yellow but never green + red.

Dede Vaughn you can add white which would cool it down a bit but also lighten it. Or black which cools it down a bit but darkens it. You could also add blue to make it cooler without lightening or darkening!
