COLOR PENCIL COMPARISON - Derwent Drawing Pencils vs Faber-Castell Polychromos realistic eye drawing

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Welcome and enjoy the comparison between the Derwent Drawing pencils and the Faber-Castell Polychromos colour pencils. Both of these pencils are premium artist quality pencils but they are both very different. I wanted to experiment more with the Derwent Drawing on Pastelmat paper and found it the perfect opportunity to compare the Derwent Drawing vs Polychromos.

ABOUT THE BIRD:
The Bush stone-curlew is a ground dwelling bird native to Australia. They are predominantly nocturnal and their distinct wailing cries can be heard through the night in areas where they live. Due to their ground-dwelling nature, bush stone-curlews are at high risk of predation from both cats and foxes, they possess good camouflage and will freeze motionless against the ground when they feel threatened. Nationally the bush stone-curlew is not a species of conservation concern, however it is considered endangered in some states of Australia.

Most pencils I have are FC Polychromos but I also have some Derwent (lightfast). Compared to the Derwent I find the Polychromo's a bit more garish..Depending on the kind of artwork you produce this is either something you like to look for or not. I would recommend 'Lightfast' ( also love these 'Drawing') in landscape over 'Polychromo's' but when you prefere you art to have bright colors, the other way around. I think they both have their superb quality depending to what you look for..

I think the Derwent Drawing pencils are incredibly underrated so I'm happy to see such a good video where someone uses them. You are very skilled and I admire the patience needed to draw the exact same with twice.

Thank you very much. Yes I absolutely love them, they are more versatile than people think and certainly work very well alongside other pencils. Thank you so much. It was actually easier the second time because I was trying to use the matching colours in the same places so I didn't have to think as much :P

The colours of the derwent drawing are amazing, and i'm secretly hoping faber-castell will one day just add them to their polychromos set ;). I do think the Polychromos side has more depth, that might be because of it's more detailed.

I got the 36 Polyxhromos Set for landscape drawing, but I wasn't satisfide with the colours, so I searched in shops for extra colours I found aroud 40 different colours, that none of them, came with the original 36 Polychromos set!!! Now, I have around 15 different green colours and reds and blues that the set didn't have, which made my drawings way more beatiful, way more realistic! It's also so much more enjoyble, to the point I now search to add colours from other makers, like Lyra and Koh-I-Noor. to build an ultimate set !!!

The darker colors look so much richer on the Poly at the end, is that due to the Derwent being wax based, the camera angle, or wax bloom?

Great video. I have prismacolor soft core and am thinking of getting polychromos. Just wondering about the blending of the two. U said u use both the Derwent and Polychromos but wondering if u have to use one or the other first. Thinking about oil and acrylic and how to use them.

  • @brusheswithbec

I think that can depend on the paper surface, I find that sometimes the polys don't lay down as well over the Derwent Drawing but works fine in reverse, but again the drawing surface plays a part in this too.

Which of these pencils to go with the Luminance? I'm not sure, I like to mix all of my pencils, and I don't usually select on pencil type but by which colour I want to use. I think the Polychromos are probably a better all rounded though.

thank you for this demnostration. Let me give you the advise to NEVER use an automatic exposure settings AND whitebalance on your camera especially for the kind of video you make. Derwent has some absurd marketing policies: they basically made not a set of colour for natural pictures but a set of colour for AUTUMNAL pictures. Aside from the obvious difficoulty at drawing details with wax based pencils they absurdly didn't add 4 more colours with a cold light green - typically called "leaf" green in Faber Castell set - or "pea" green, a full yellow, an orange or a poppy red and a deep blue. just 4-5 colours that would make drawing set complete. I don't want a set that requires to borrow colours from other set for doing any images: ok I can maybe draw maybe a fox with exactly its fur colours... and what about the whole environment around it? I don't have any doubt that Drawing set is not ment to be used for details or compete with polychromos. Probably it would be more meaningful comparing them with Prismacolor set that is wax based too

Yes I have since changed the way I film with my camera and always use the manual exposure settings now. Learned that the hard way :) There's always going to rains to not compare two particular sets of pencils due to differences in colour range or pencil composition, but that's also as much reason to compare them. I always enjoy exploring the opportunities of a tool work for something if I wanted it to, and how much difference does wax vs oil based pencil really make.
