Colonia del Sacramento is the capital of the department of Colonia, in the southwest of Uruguay, located on the northern bank of the Río de la Plata. Approximately 177 kilometers from Montevideo and about 50 kilometers as the crow flies from Buenos Aires, Argentina, the city is known locally as "Colonia." Its old town, the historic neighborhood covering 12 hectares at the western end, was declared a World Heritage Site in 1995 due to its successful fusion of Portuguese, Spanish and post-colonial architectural styles.
The city plan is of Portuguese origin, standing out for its narrow stone streets that reflect its military tradition. Colonia del Sacramento shares a strong connection with Buenos Aires due to its proximity, and there is a project to join both cities through a binational bridge.
The history of Colonia del Sacramento dates back to the time of European colonization in South America. Founded in 1680 by field master Manuel Lobo, the city has experienced periods of both Portuguese and Spanish occupation. During the Treaty of Tordesillas, which divided lands between Spain and Portugal in South America, inaccuracies and disputes led to territorial conflicts.
Colonia del Sacramento has been the scene of historical events, such as the Spanish occupation in 1680, followed by a return to Portugal in 1681. There was a new Spanish occupation in 1704, but finally, in 1777, Spain occupied it definitively, endorsed by the treaty of San Ildefonso.
The historic neighborhood of Colonia, declared a World Heritage Site, displays unique architecture with European influences. In addition, the city has monuments and places of interest, such as the Basilica of the Blessed Sacrament and the lighthouse built in 1857. The recovery of the historic center took place in the 1970s, after almost 200 years of ruin and abandonment.
Colonia del Sacramento offers a mix of tourist attractions, beaches, and a special connection with history. Recently, a project called 'Colonia Wing East' has been announced, which seeks to turn Colonia into a center for the knowledge economy industry.
The city has transportation options such as bicycle rentals, golf carts, and urban transportation provided by companies such as Sol Antigua and ABC Coop. The region is seismically stable, and its climate is humid subtropical, with pleasant temperatures and regularly distributed rainfall.
