Alocasias are by far my favorite species of plants. I have at least 30 ! I live in Greece, the summer alocasias are doing extremely well . They are the most rewarding plants they can literally triple in size in just few months. The winter though….things are getting difficult . I think a few hours of direct sun is a MUST for alocasias in order to thrive and also fertilizer is crucial. They need a lot of light , a lot of water and a lot of fertilizer. The winter they slow down significantly despite the use of grow lights . They really like hot weather and sunshine. They are very different from other houseplants you really need to know what you doing they are not very forgiving.

I agree with you, one should try an "easier" and "less expensive" Alocasia first. They can be tricky, and one needs to make sure the humidity and light are on-point, and has learned how to water them properly, before getting one of the rare and super spendy ones. They are soooooo easy to get wrong! I killed my first Black Velvet and my first Stingray. But now I have big specimens of both, plus some fancier ones, and they make me incredibly happy. Thank you for your videos, I enjoy them very much.

dont forget about the feed for the alocasias, they need a bit more feed aka fertilizer then some other plants

using clear pots for alocasias has really helped me in understanding the right time to water them. I also have some of them in glass no drainage vessels and they're thriving. the nodes on stem cuttings will become activated but it takes a long time. I have done that with my Alocasia bambino and it produced three growth points along it's stem. but it took +4 months and now one of the growth points is growing leaves more rapidly than the other two. I've also had +10 varieties of alocasias for a bit more than three years and touch the wood none of them have ever had spider mites (also none of my calatheas). but I think it's because in my country nurserys use high doses of chemical pesticides very regularly so usually there's no pests on them to begin with. the only plants that ever had spider mites in my apartment was a croton that I tossed it away(it was a true pest magnet) and a philodendron verracussom and a gloriousom(they were sitting right next to the croton and were weak due to my usual underwaterings) that I immediately chopped all of they're leaves even the healthy looking ones so it didn't find a chance to spread to other plants

Aaahhh Alocasia, my first love. My cucullata and wentii got me in the hobby about 1.5 years ago. Had my struggles due to my ignorance, but now the cucullata is bushy and sizing up again and the wentii just pushed out it´s 6th leaf on both corms. Thank you, Memo, for your content. It´s entertaining, informative, well thought-out and I always enjoy your videos very much.

Alocasia are one of my favs. I had to spray them with soap, neem, and water this morning. I also do soil drench. If I do it often, mites don't do great damage and the majority of the leaves stay beautiful. Caladiums and colocasia grow outside best and I don't have to deal with pest except bugs eating the bulbs. The bulbs are different too. They send out more than one shoot from a bulb sometimes. Alocasia will go dormant for 2-3 months every other year inside my home and it can happen late winter early spring. They mature more each time. My older ones are exploding. The corms are visible and I want to cover them with fine bark but it's so actively growing I don't want to stifle the lil babies coming up.

Once again Memo to the rescue. 😊 I was in the one leaf club all last year 😂 and have learnt by my mistakes that the water fertiliser, thing is super important when new leaf appears, oh and put into semi hydro that alone has allowed me to finally have 5 leaves on my micholitziana yayyy lol. Didn’t realise though that they could have more direct light than they are getting, which I will rectify tomorrow, specially for my black velvet she has had 3 leaves for ages now with no sign on new growth. Hi memo! Greetings and thanks for doing this video! I've joined in the addiction three months ago and so far got plenty of philodendron growing happily like weeds in my place xD However, the frydek is a real 'die for' for me. I was worried, because I already heard, that they can be real fussy plants, but your video gave me confidence in getting one. I tend to baby my plants pretty much. So I'll give it a try❤

Great tips. I love my jewel Alocasia and have some elephant ears outside, but I’ve given up on Colocasia and Caladiums. Don’t know why, but they can’t seem to survive in my fast paced, competitive home environment. 😂 I’d think they would be the same, but maybe the leaf thickness is the difference? I really wanted my mojito to thrive. Nope x2 merc’d. You are spot on with light. Once I gave them a few hours of direct light and let them dry out a day or two before watering, boom! Blew right through the 3-5 leaf club. I now treat my Alocasia more like a Begonia for the win.

💚AL💚CASIAS AND C💚L💚CASIAS!!! 💚

Memo that’s very true with the watering and pests. As long as I had gotten that under control They grew like weeds. I have been experimenting with My Frydek, (variegated) and Silver dragon. I personally don’t like the hanging look and have noticed that since the stems are hollow they absorb the moisture causing them to stand., so that’s when I give them a drink. Also propping them up for a while also helps the plant to suck more water into the stem and after a few day/weeks they stand alone. They’re all in Semi Hydro Lecha and loving life. But the game changer was the clear plastic pots. To see the roots growing is very rewarding. I don’t water as long as moisture is evident BUT the dry out periods vary. Cuprea don’t like it at all. I also have some in glass vessels and that’s the highlight. How often do You flush Your Semi Hydro? To see the roots grow and twist and turn is amazing but protect the roots from the sun or they’ll burn. I also feed Them as long as They push out growth. They grow the whole year therefore I feed Them. I also have a large variegated Frydek with 8 huge leafs (ca.40 cm) and 7 pups that’s stand in a west facing window. The stems go to the light naturally and I am constantly turning her. Yours is almost completely round? I like that 360 degrees look. How do I get that? Also I have killed so many Azlanii that the plant Police are looking for Me. Can You do a video on her? I find it near impossible to get 1 new leaf before she dies. Thanks for You content. You and Claire have brought happiness to My plants and saved Me a lot a Chips.

I have read many posts on Alocasia but never one that mentioned the importance of watering on time to prevent leaf drop. I have found that mine do well with no drainage/bottom watering. I am trying to stick with jewel alocasia because of space limitations, but recently purchased a Corazon which if you are correct regarding the leaf thickness is not a jewel. A also bought a jacklyn which has very rigid leaves, but seems I have seen some that are quite large. I guess, I will see. Love alocasia, but not when they are tall and spindly.

My second attempt at an Alocasia polly is a success, it is still alive after 6 months and recently produced 7 corms and 2 flowers. Thos flowers might kill it though, I have removed them but it lost some of its 7 leaves as well and I am left with 3. I now also have an Alocasia cuprea, immediately transfered it to pon and it is producing beautifull leaves. Caladium is a struggle, might try some next spring. I think crocusses and crocosmia also have corms

Love my Alocasia. They don’t to give me much trouble unless I miss a watering. My silver dragon dropped several leaves when I missed a watering last summer. There is no wilt, water and come back with them lol.

The only pest I've I've had in my entire collection, if you don't count nats, is spider mites on my Zebrina. Luckily I caught it quickly and it happened right after I’d treated everyone with Azomax. I just missed her and the other 4 alocasia she sits with. Thankfully, she's fine now.

I killed a few Alocasias but am getting better. I currently have two Cupreas, a Black Velvet, a Bisma, a Nebula and a Dragon Scale. All the leaves of my Silver Dragon died recently, but the stem is firm so I hope for new leaves soon. I have had no luck with Alocasia "Infernalis" AKA Black Panther. I killed two! Would like to try again some time but have had no luck finding a new one (I am in Toronto, Canada.) My original Azlanii died, but it gave me 7 corms, which all sprouted quickly and the plantlets are doing very well! (I put the corms in pumice in a seedling starter tray with a ventilated humidity dome and kept the medium wet. I replaced the water weekly. The plantlets are still growing in pumice in self-watering pots.) All my Alocasias are now under grow lights. I have also noticed the increased water requirement when they are getting a new leaf and check my plant daily when the new leaf is developing. I just moved the majority of my jewel Alocasias into a 55 gallon fish tank that I am using as a terrarium. So far, so good. Love your videos! Great information as usual. Keep it up!

I wish I had more space - I´d love to have some caladiums too - they are so beautiful 😍 I got my first alocasia last autumn - she wasn´t in great shape, had thrips, but omg, she grew into such a beautiful big fat plant with many babies around her, and made me fall in love with alocasias. It´s my beloved Alocasia Silver Dragon - she is so hardy and beautiful that it became one of my top 3 favourite plants that I´d keep no matter what. Thanks to her I got an alocasia fever and started collecting them :-D They all live happily in Lechuza pon.

Very informative 👏 love this plant 🪴 but she's so complex,what's your take on peebles tray, for her I don't like humidifiers?

I just got an alocasia tigrina superba today, its about twice the size I was expecting, and I'm really excited to see how well it does in my house. I'm sure I will revisit this video many times in the coming week as it seems to be either fussy, or not happy with being in the mail for a week. also, my unicorn, the warocqueanum, just came in to my favorite plant store, but I'm afraid I'll mess up an expensive plant as a beginner, do I wait, or do I chase the dragon?

Hi super informative video! I've been having issues with my alocasia cuprea's leaves facing down. I thought maybe it was getting too much light as its in a glass cabinet under a (not super powerful) grow light but as you said alocasias love bright light, now I'm not so sure. Any ideas? Thanks!

Yea colo, alo, and even xanthosoma can be a paradise for mites, but I've found that including a neem oil dillution with every watering essentially prevents it. In fact my watering sprayer always has neem oil in it. For every plant.

Great chat, thank you, definately going to get natural preditors ! Agree with you on the results of some direct light. I also found my Alocasias prefer less water but on a more frequent basis in opposed to drenching them less frequently. Hope that makes sense. And also FERTILIZER!!! That seems to have given me more leaves?

Hiya! I had my Alocasia Amazonica on the windowsill of a south-facing window, behind a semi-sheer curtain, and the leaves started drooping. I have heard that this is normally a sign of too much light, which is surprising to me, since I have heat repelling tinted windows. Strangely, after a stay in the naughty corner (thrips) where it gets medium light at best, the leaves started to perk up again. Is this typical for the Amazonica, perhaps? I live in Belgium, so similar wheather to yours.

Is it okay to leave the quarms in with the mother plant? Do they like to be root bound or prefer to have space in their roots?

i had 9 alocasias for nearly 3 years and never had spider mites, even in winters with centtral heating. then again I've never had mites on my plants, just regular spiders. For last two years i've been fighting thrips, and even they seem to just walk on them to get to other plants.

So humidity is relatively stable around 40, days are short and dark, also all my plants live on a northern window with two massive evergreens right in front of my window, and all they do is bend towards the window. I don't own humidifier because i don't want mold on my walls, and i don't supplement light, and yet most of my alocasias are in flower season since late may and none of them has lost a leaf, because i feed them with recommended dosage of 5-4-6 fertiliser with every watering all year round.

@@finnhindley Greetings from the Czech Republic - same for me. Northern window, large trees in front of it and no issues. I use humidifier in winters to keep it at 60%, but gave up this summer - 40% humidity and no problem so far.

But can you prevent them going dormant? I have my Polly under the grow light and its pretty warm in my house in winter 🤔 Or this is their natural cycle?

I love alocasias. Didnt by the way knew that they are not all called alocasia :D My first try with them was not good. It was bapy polly and I rotted the corm :) Few yeas later I found already mature pink dragon and it just love my house and me. and now I have huge amount of babys from that. Dont know what to do with them. I just bought black velvet and silver dragon aaand red something -secret? I am fasinated to see how will they do. Just for comparison I killed ph. squamiferum. Dont know the reason and melanochrysum lost its leaves. Ph imperial red doesnt like me eather. Alocasia is for me and propably anthurium clavinervium...i live in Finland. Ooo I killed A. chrystallinum And forgetii is not looking good. They dont like me.

I'm pretty new to the plant thing, I only had one alocasia before last winter, my silver dragon. We had a few weeks without heating during the winter, the whole building went down to like 12°C, all that happened is that this plant went on pause. It stopped everything. It had a leaf unfurling, it stopped during the process and started again when the temperature rose again. Now I have 10 alocasias, they all grow, quite a few of them absolutely want to flower, I don't know why. Until now, no spider mites on them (but I had some on a few calatheas and my monstera adansonii) I must admit that I tried Jacklyn, and both time it died (one I ordered online and it didn't survive the trip, the corm was all mushy,...) and the second one I found in a garden center one week before I left to go to visit my parents for 8 days, and it didn't acclimate well, as I wasn't there to act as soon as it started going downwards, I came back and it was dead. I don't think I'll try it again soon though. ^^ At the moment, they grow less fast though, the weather is very grey and the temperature is less high than usually in summer. Which is great for me, I don't like heat, but less for the plants. XD
