Why do we take a cylinder only for calculating formula of collision diameter? The molecule could have travelled in a spherical or cuboid way for example. And if cylinder, why is radius sigma? Shoudnt the diameter be sigma since the particles are moving in one direction ?

    Dear , there is π in numerator too & in denominator it's (√π ) so we can write it as( π ) ^ -1/2 & we know if base same then we can add / Sub the powers so 1 - 1/2 = 1/2 = √ π in numerator .
