It's really important to consider that this song was created as part of a soundtrack to the 1986 fantasy movie Highlander about immortals ('princes of the universe'). It's styling is very much built for that, as is clear from the music video!

Hi guys, I love your reactions but I'd suggest not reacting to anymore from the Magic tour. Queen was amazing as always but Freddie's vocals were really suffering, especially Wembley. The late 70's and early to mid 80's He was really in his prime vocally. I saw Queen twice, 1979 and 80. Dreamers Ball in Paris, 1979, Loser in the End, or Dragon attack live are all really good choices. Also anything from the Milton Keynes concert, they were on fire that night!

Its perfect for the movie, a very dark badass fantasy action cult movie. The soundtrack intro sounds a bit different , slightly more heavy to what they used for the movie than the song itself. Very underrated, very under appreciated as a movie soundtrack and as a heavy rock song. Another hidden gem by Queen

  • @heyjude1920

If you look at the IMBd link for The Highlander movie, you’ll see that Queen actually did 8 songs for the soundtrack. The man was immortal, there could be only one. In one of his lives, he falls in love & has to watch her age and die in his arms. This is where “Who wants to live forever” comes in. As well as one of Freddie’s best vocal performances, written by the highly under-rated John Deacon. PLEASE react to the lyric version of “One year of Love”. They never did it live, and Freddie’s blows this one out of the water! Love you guys!

The song was written for the soundtrack of the movie HIGHLANDER (hence the lyrics). It was kind of the main theme, with A KIND OF MAGIC as end credits song, the ballad WHO WANTS TO LIVE FOREVER as the theme of the movie's hero, and the heavy metal anthem GIMME THE PRIZE as the theme of the villain. I would recommend GIMME THE PRIZE. I think you would enjoy that song more, if only for Brian May's guitar work on it.

I see everyone's telling you about "Highlander". Another rocker from the soundtrack is "Gimme the Prize". It's also lyrically about the film, especially the badass & genuinely frightening villain. You should react to it. Like this song it demonstrates that Queen could still rock hard in the 80's. Brian's guitar is searing & Freddie's "rough" voice is killer. And right in the middle of it Brian, genius that he is, makes his guitar sound like bagpipes playing a highland march! I'd bet money you guys would both love it. Now that you've done "Princes" you should watch the music video to give you a better idea what the movie's about. And if you do "Gimme the Prize" you should do the video that also better illustrates it. Plus, you'd probably enjoy the movie, you should watch it sometime!

You are listening out of context which is good for the casual listener. If you do not know what it's about then you could almost say it's an almost heavy metal Prog song being about immortals and it's fanciful. This song in context to the film makes absolute sense, the film is joy "Highlander" 80s movies at its best. You have a Scotsman playing a Spaniard. A Frenchman playing a Scotsman ans Mr Crabs is in it.

His "sword and head held high" was about fighting to the death with an actual sword. Princes of the Universe was written for the first Highlander film, and was eventually taken on as the intro to the Highlander TV series. The 'princes' were immortals who took each other's heads for their power. The series starts off in the early days of the gathering, where the immortals became more and more drawn to each other, setting the stage for an eventual fight between the last two immortals, part of an age old prophecy of unknown origin. "In the end, there can be only one. May it be Duncan MacLeod... the Highlander"...

@Andy & Alex Hi guys ! "Long time, no see" as we used to say in England of the 1970's ! Then you come back after what seemed to be ages with a Queen song - which is great, but alas, one of my personally most disliked Queen songs ever. But there was no way you could know that, could you, so I will not hold it against you.....this time ! 😣 (hii..hii 😜). It is difficult to judge this song against other Queen recordings as it belongs to the soundtrack to the excellent 1986 SciFi / Fantasy film "Highlander", but having said that there are some wonderful tracks to the soundtrack like the classic " Who Wants To Live Forever", one of Queen's most hauntingly beautiful ballads ever, and "One Vision", another iconic song of theirs. "Princes" is definitely not one of my favourite Queen songs but it fits in with the context of the film story, which I can highly recommend for viewers who both like the genre and Queen to watch, and the thundering finale during which this song is played. Judging it as a pure Queen song I personally would give "Princes of the Universe" a meager 4 / 10, but putting it into its place in the context of the film's dramatics, an 8 / 10. 😋

@@Motown-1966 Well said ! At the time I thought "What the hell are they doing ? Soundtracks ? Stadium Anthems ?" - that is also the reason why Queen polarizes between the old fans of their early heavy rock era and their later fans of their more commercial style. It is also the reason why they have so many fans of different generations - they made music for everyone, for every kind of musical taste....and were always excellent and successful, whether one personally liked what they were doing or not. Oh, by the way...I didn't like "Flash Gordon" either - it is the only Queen vinyl LP that I did not buy ! 😜

You should check out Was it All Worth It from 1989 The Miracle. At the time they thought that may be the final body of work to be recorded, and this song is like a swansong to the bands career. Good vocals, good guitar work, good writing! Thanks for your reactions! Another one to check out would be Now Im Here from Hungarian Rhapsody. Great live performance from them.

Song was used in an 80s fantasy film in which they provided the soundtrack. Movie was called Highlander and was about an immortal man. So that kind of helped influence the lyrics.

By the way, Andy & Alex - did you notice that this very powerful and guitars orientated song is from 80's? Actually from that "I kind of magic" period. Actually_2 - from the same album as "I kind of magic"! Unbelievable, right? :) This proves once again how amazing and diverse Queen and their music are. This song sounds hard and raw even in these days.

“Disjointed” is a perfect description, Alex. At this point in their career, it’s like things came a little too easy for them. “You need a movie soundtrack? Here you go!” And they threw a bunch of really cool pieces together that may or may not make a whole.

Late 80's and the 90's stuff is really amazing. The miracle album, innuendo and made in heaven are as good as most of the 70's stuff, not as good as a night at the opera, but definitely everything else.

Yeah it’s from the 1985 movie, Highlander (released in 1986). Queen made an unofficial soundtrack for the fantasy movie but as Roger Taylor once stated, the band wanted to make a ‘fully fledged Queen album’ instead. So the A Kind Of Magic album is a sort of hybrid soundtrack album, if you like. ‘One Vision’ which is on the same album is actually featured in the film Iron Eagle, which was released in the same year as Highlander.
