Call me weird but Absolutely Curtains is aptly named and a gem. By the way there is another soundtrack called Zabriskie Point featuring some reworked tracks and a few new songs., there are other bands on the album most notably Jerry Garcia of The Grateful Dead. Not essential but of interest to any Floyd fan.

For me personally, I'm ashamed to admit that this album is generally lost in my memory. I know of it. I've heard it. I like it. But for some reason when I'm in the mood to put on some Floyd, this album never crosses my mind. Listening to it here with you, Im smiling... I remember each song as they come... Shows me I need to re-expose myself to this great album. Thank you for refreshing my memory.

The dates are becoming foggy now, but I'd swear it was 1972. I was in the Navy at the time, floating around the Mediterranean Sea. We spent a lot of time in Athens, Greece and I loved it there. There were a number of "youth hostels" around Athens and hundreds of young people (hippies) from all over the world, who traveled through Europe and searched out inexpensive places to stay. The hostels were perfect. There was always wine, hash (Turkish or Lebanese) and music. These hostels were where I first heard a lot of German rock, and the soundtrack to a film called "La Vallee: Obscured by Clouds". When I got back to the States, I had somehow acquired a cassette tape of La Vallee and no one had ever heard anything like this fabulous music. Fast forward a bunch of years. I was raised on the East coast, in and around Washington, D.C. In January of 1978, I moved to L.A., Ca. By that time, Pink Floyd was huge and you could find its music as readily as McCartney's or Lennon's. Except for one record, anyway. You just couldn't find a copy of La Vallee: Obscured By Clouds". Not anywhere. So, one day I was on a transit bus, heading East on Ventura Blvd. when I happened to see the marque of a theater on the south side of the street. The marque announced "PINK FLOYD'S LA VALLEY- OBSCURED BY CLOUDS!! I jumped up, grabbed my ole lady's arm and ran to the front, yelling, "Stop the bus!!" We had to wait a couple hours for the show, but I finally got to see the film the soundtrack was created for. The film (that I won't go in to, now), was as incredible as the soundtrack. There is one thing you've said a couple times, that doesn't sit right. I first heard Obscured By Clouds (and acquired a copy), in what I'd swear was '72. I had come back to the States in December of that year and got one of the first copies of Dark Side some time in '73, In fact, later in '73 I saw the Dark Side tour in Hampton Roads, VA. What I'm saying is, yes, for some strange reason, Obscured By Clouds was ignored or overlooked, but I don't believe Dark Side had anything to do with it. Dark Side of the Moon, as I recall, didn't show up until at least a year after I was already listening to Obscured By Clouds.

When you live your life sandwiched between "Meddle" and "Dark Side of the Moon" you are bound to be overlooked. Don't sleep on this album, though. It's solid Floyd. To me, the standouts I always return to are "Free Four" "The Gold It's In The..." and "Wots... Uh, the Deal?" The middle child has things to offer, too!

@@frankiew8532 four? The soundtrack to 'More' was their first work for Barbet Schroeder, as was this. They contributed a lot to the soundtrack of 'Zabriskie Point'. The climactic explosion scene at the end is basically 'Careful with that axe', from memory. There's a film called 'The Committee', where they contribute various pops & squawks on VCS3, and they play over the outro credits, basically Rick on Hammond with bass, but a 'new' piece. There was also a 1967 'Swinging London' collection called 'Tonite lets all make love in London' [sic] Which features a 16 minute Interstellar overdrive, & a piece called 'Nick's Boogie'. Are those the ones you refer to, or do you have others? And I'm not including the surfer film made about that time [ forget the title, but went to see it in a cinema with then girlfriend ]. It was basically a cut together series of underwater & inside wave slow motion clips, over 'Echoes'. That just uses the original album cut, so hardly something 'created' for the purpose.

This is such an underappreciated album! When I became a fan of Floyd, of course the usual album suspects became part of my collection (Meddle, Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall), but I became immersed in ALL that was the Floyd - and that meant deeper album cuts, like this one, the soundtrack to More, Atom Heart Mother, and of course the Syd Barrett stuff. This album blew me away! (I think it was a 'compilation' album called Works that introduced me to Free Four, so I had to find out more!) Glad you found this one!

"Obscured by Clouds" is actually a soundtrack for the movie: "La Vallee". This album is probably the birth of the classic Pink Floyd sound. All the elements of "Dark Side of the Moon" are in place, picking up where "Meddle" left off. They have moved from Psychedelia to Prog.

As you're following the evolution of famous groups, you should do the Beatles. Trouble is everyone has already heard everything so giving an honest first reaction is hard, but the sequence of evolution is fascinating. I got into watching these reaction vids because I wanted to explain to the teenage daughter of a friend how music utterly changed in in the 60s. I demonstrated examples from two ends of the era e.g. She Loves You (Beatles, 1963) and Echoes (PF 1971). At one end it's simple songs 'I love her, she loves me, I so happy' or 'I love her, she doesn't love me, I'm so sad' and at the other end it's vast long mystical, mysterious works of art. I then posed the question, WTF happened in between? Of course 3 things happened, better recording studios, LP (long play) albums which meant popular music could expand out of the limits of one side of a 45rpm record, and lots of LSD. The most rapid period of change was 1966, to 1967 mostly because of LSD. Listen (in your own time) to the Beatles, Rubber Soul, Revolver and Sgt Peppers. Or follow the entire progression.

“Animals” is amazing, but it’s also the beginning of Roger Waters’ domineering. I may be sacreligious by saying this, but the second half after “Dogs” kind of drags on musically. Especially “Sheep”. Which makes sense, because the second half of the album was only written by Waters. Still an amazing album, but the lack of complete cohesion and collaboration in the band keeps me from saying it’s the best Floyd album. Plus Gilmour didn’t like it, believe it or not. Just “Dogs”, which is easily the best song on the album.

IMO Pink Floyd were at the peak of their creativity as a band around the time they did this album. Just look at the timeline: Meddle was released in November 1971 and they recorded the Live at Pompeii movie the same month, as well as regular touring until December, when they wrote the whole of Dark Side of the Moon (the album was released over a year later). In early January they rehearsed Dark Side with a completely new sound system and stage show before taking it out on the road later in the month. In February, after touring with Dark Side for several weeks they went into a studio for a week and wrote and recorded most of Obscured by Clouds before touring Japan, then returned and spent one more week finishing the recording and mixing of this album. Also looking at the mix of songwriting credits for this as well as Meddle and Dark Side shows how the whole band were firing on all cylinders.

Delving into my collection, I would recommend listening to Pink Floyd:The Early Years 1972 'Obfus/cation' volume which was part of a mega box set released a couple of years ago. Retailing at about $500, might be pricey but you can buy the separate volumes year by year. Blow some cash on them over a year like I did, well worth it for a big chunk of Floydian rarities, odd & ends, TV appearances, remixes and so on if you collect their stuff. Anyway, the 1972 volume includes a 2016 remix of this whole album.

Interestingly, they then during their long 73 tour, drop CE from the set and started playing the first two tracks from this LP, which are cool instrumentals indeed. In many shows they opened with OBC/WYI, sometimes they opened with Echoes then those two came next. Oddly, the last two shows I have from 73, both recorded on November 4 in London, an early and a late show as many artists did in the 60s and 70s when playing live, they play OBC/WYI as the final songs.

it is a shame this album doesn't usually get the credit it deserves. These grooves are raw and musically more honest then those on DSOTM or WYWH. Less produced, it shows their individual qualities even more. I love it!

I just realized that in your Echoes reaction video I said that Mudmen wasn't really a track I liked, when in fact I absolutely love Mudmen. It's one of my favorite Floyd instrumentals. I mean to say that 'Absolutely Curtains' was the odd song out, in that it's not really a song. My bad.

Also my first time to hear this one. Thanks. It's toward the "progressive pop" end of the spectrum (in my very own personal scheme of classification scheme) - sort of like pop, but with 40 new ideas per minute subtly mixing into the singable melody lines. I think I might have invented the term (or cobbled it together out of what's readily available for classification-heads) to describe certain Cardiacs songs, so it's not a criticism. Some of the songs are almost a bit country? Cool. I like it, whatever one would call it - if it desperatedly needed a label to tie onto it. They know what they're doing, so everything they do is good. I'll give you a link to a Cardiacs song that travels across several sonic universes in 2:30 or thereabouts. If I'm repeating myself with this one, you're welcome; no problemo; for you I slaughter the bull (as someone I knew long ago would say in a slightly supercilious, but not definitely offensive tone ... wait ... ) ... ... Edward Lear Disease - The delight in mismatched expressionismismas ... here's something by him you might enjoy reading: www.nonsenselit.org/Lear/ns/fc.html And then there's Cameras by Cardiacs, which might be punk, might be just plain ole rock, might be prog, might be jazz, might be something it shouldn't be. A rather unstable song, but not overly disgustingly so. Pause a moment at the end to reflect on the journey the music took to get you there. It's humble yet transcendent. And that is not meant to be an accidental Learism. kzread.info/dash/bejne/aoGgr6SuedXVnrg.html

While I like this album (it's better than "More") it's not top tier Floyd, not as good as "Meddle" which came before it. The so-called "Devil Horns" were used throughout history in many different ways. Mostly it was a ward against the Evil Eye. It's different in Hindu culture and South American cultures. Look it up. Ronnie James Dio popularized it. It was then usurped by Metal Heads to symbolize Rocking and Rolling and the general Banging of the Head. I don't think Andrew's using here to offend you and promote the Devil, good sir. He has two handsome cats and likes Pink Floyd. He can't be that bad. Peace
