The old Big East famously had a football faction and a non-football faction. Villanova (non-football faction) didn't want Temple in the conference at all. Temple was added as a football only member as a compromise. After Miami, VT, and Boston College left the Big East, and the football faction was weakened as a voting bloc, Villanova had their chance to rid themselves of Temple. Plus, it didn't help Temple's cause that they were football only members who sucked at football.

If Illinois gets kicked out then has a 10-2 season like they did in 1989, they automatically get back in? Will other sports be able to kick teams out?

If the Big Ten/SEC/Big 12/ACC do kick out teams, then people/fans are going to be furious. People were already mad about Oregon St and Washington St and those teams don't have a lot of fans. Money is sadly driving everything, but this would be a poor decision. A team like Indiana is so ingrained in the Big Ten that it would be insane for them to not be in the league. Hopefully none of this happens, but with the way things are going, it is probably inevitable. Great video, Mark!!!

There's something B1G that you are missing when talking about "kicking schools out" of a conference like the B1G. First of all the B1G is run by the presidents and they look at the school in B1G picture terms, not just football. B1G schools make more money off research grants than they ever do off football. So when you start kicking schools out, you need to think about what else you lose. The B1G research group is heavily dependent on having access to the Chicago teaching hospitals and John Hopkins. The Chicago teaching hospitals are run by the U of I and Northwestern. There's no way that Michigan, Iowa, Ohio State, Minnesota or any other school with a huge medical research function is going to lose access to those Chicago hospitals. That's why when you look at schools to add, AAU affiliation is important to the B1G. It's huge research money. So, Miami, Tech, NC, become more valuable when you throw in research. FSU wants in the AAU and the B1G has 19 voting members... yes, that's one more than their football schools... and those are. No way do they kick out a highly ranked research institution.

There has only been one school kicked out of the power 4. In 1907, Michigan was voted out of the conference for refusing to adhere to league rules limiting football teams to no more than five games and players to three years of eligibility. That was until they returned in 1916. However if we are listing programs who could be kicked from the P4, I think Cal could potentially be on that chopping block.
