I collected antique pocketknives for many years and eventually acquired about 800 of them. including hundreds of pre-WWII Cases, some more than 100 years old, and a full set of 12 original 1920s Remington bullets. Sold a few but still have about 700 of them. I'd sell all if I could find a buyer, but here in California not too many people interested in old knives, so I guess I'll leave them to my grandsons to dispose as they wish.

When bone is drilled out small cracks can form . With age and changes in temperature and moisture the unseen cracks can open up. It’s an antique and adds to the character of the knife. 🍀

The cracks at the lanyard hole dates back to when the bullets were first offered for sale. As matter of fact a bullet without the crack could command a slight premium. I use to deal in knives and any delivery would have a couple of factory new knives with the crack. The best guess was since the knife scales are of man made material, and the lanyard hole was drilled to a very close diameter to allow for a friction fit when the lanyard tube was inserted. So the stress caused by the tube on the plastic is what caused the cracking. Now, you will not see this on the bullets with bone handles as this series was a step up on price. And as an FYI, the 1982 big trapper ( with the man made scales) was the first knife in the series and was available only for purchase if a person bought a certain Remington shotgun. Bottom line, the cracks can be disappointing but should not hurt the value of the knives. Enjoy them for they can take a person’s imagination back to the time between the wars. Just as an FYI, I collected Coke Bottle folding hunters. I was lucky enough to own knives most folks would o only see in pictures. Alas, I have sold off all but a small hand full of knives that are users now. I thank you for letting an old man relive some of his younger life experiences.

One thing I started doing is keeping those Silica packs in with my knives to absorb moisture and I now keep a de-humidifier in the room they are stored in

Hi, the handles on these knives' is Delron they should not have cracked under any circumstances. I think the brass lanyard ferrules were too large when they manufactured them. Thank you for watching and commenting.

I collect the newer camillus made Remington knives and unfortunately they are prone to cracking around the edges of the covers around the lanyard tubes and pins. The plastic material they used shrinks ever so slightly. It does affect the value slightly but not significantly because it is so common... almost to be expected.

I have 2 1984 camillus remingtons and they both have cracks , I believe that the lanyard holes are just too close to the end . I still had rather have them with 440 than the new ones with 420 and no pins in the scales except for the spring pin

Maybe the handles cracked from drying out I oil mine cause I like to collect stag case knives

Case is too expensive for using they are good to frame and hang so you don't scratch them not practical,I don't buy them

I agree I have quit buying them, I mostly look for older knives at different places I go.
