Collecting Addicts Ep 16: "Boring Baku" F1, Lightweight Cars, and The Best 2 Cars You Can't Drive!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Debate over the fairness of calling F1 races boring, the balance between sport and entertainment, a pushover Alonso, lightweight cars maybe not always being the answer (?!), and the best two 1980s cars for a rock star who's not allowed to drive.
'Collecting Addicts' is a new format Collecting Cars podcast hosted by Chris Harris, Edward Lovett, Manish Pandey, Neil Clifford & Chris Cooper.

Yup, and experience from other podcasts shows that it's not unpleasant to have someone even scrolling through pictures/material/web searches live if need be...as long as they're not totally ham-fisted and they display it well. It's actually really natural-feeling and good nowadays. Best to have pre-prepared pics too, though just to be smooth and to not have it devolve into live-googling only (I'd suggest several photos for each, as it's pretty quick to grab several while you're picking out the one photo).

Not normally one for commenting, but I'm loving the podcast as a regular fixture of my week! As someone who is relatively young bloke (having grown up in the Schumi era), who now pays a lot more attention to different disciplines of motorsport and is also active in sim racing, Chris' point of losing that build up and spectacle really does hit home. F1 from my perspective has lost some of the excitement and build up to weekends, and I feel the sprints just feel so artificial and out of place. It's telling for someone of my age, when I turned off midway through the Baku sprint last week, and just watched the whole WEC Spa race because it was much more exciting and enjoyable to watch (definitely wasn't the Caddy V8 in their LMDh). Not sure this will be seen by you guys, but please keep the pod going!

I'm 27 reside in South Africa and everytime you bring up the songs I just remember the songs my parents listen to. So Belters in the car: Journey don't stop believing. Queen (there's a few but hammer to fall and too much love will kill you) Opus life is life Meat loaf I'd do anything for love(but I won't do that) There's lots of other songs (my mom would kill me if I didn't mention John Bon Jovi...) Then lionel Richie, Michael Jackson, Roxette, Celine Dion etc. The reason why this podcast is working is that there's the past, present and future being discussed. I mean Harris's car pick (I didn't even know that thing existed) the closest thing I thought of was that big Pink 6 wheeled Thunderbird. Really please don't drop this, car nuts like myself are absolutely loving it.

There are precedents set by dropping drivers into other cars, the Race of Champions is annual, but there's no reason why you couldn't use Chris's analogy of a series which could perhaps change the 'marque' every GP Friday and create a separate spectacle. It would also be a great marketing show for each weekend for the brands.

I refuse to believe that almost all of you haven't had proper hooligan fun with a Jaguar 5.0L Supercharged V8. It deserves, at minimum, a special segment about that engine and the cars it powered for so long. I implore you to give that engine and the F-Type a fitting farewell. The smart way to go to a F1 race is to have headphones and a radio so you can listen to commentary. Then you can actually pay attention. Luckily my old Nokia Windows Phone had a radio built in so I could use that back in 2013 when I attended the Canadian Grand Prix. We also had a huge screen so we actually followed the race quite well - I'll always remember DRS chicken with Fernando and Lewis.

Back in about '88 a friend fitted a ducktail spoiler to his Beetle. Driving down the local test track (read: country road), I suggested it was doing nothing but add drag. My friend protested and said he could really feel the extra grip at the rear. As we approached the next corner he said, 'watch this' and floored it as he turned in. We spun 180 degrees. Ahhh, the folly of youth.

After the race these could be auctioned off to raise money for a local charity 3) Other content - have you done best gear selector? Nothing else for now other than to ask that this kept going please

So many sage comments on the F1 situation. The DTS situation has started to get to the heads of the team owners and F1 management. I also think that now it gets more media coverage, they are desperate to fill proverbial column inches so every little quote and word is over analyzed, such as ‘boring’ I don’t mind them trying to make more entertainment but don’t tamper with the Sunday. I would be happy for them to have reverse grid sprint race on the Saturday in order to make a spectacle and then the sport on a Sunday.

Curious, considering you have a couple of broadcasters in the mix, that you have not spoken about the coverage of F1 from a production standpoint. Is there a decent director? Are the cameras in the right place to see the muscle of these cars pounding around the track? Will the commentators please shut up for a minute every now and then so we can hear the roar of the engines? Are the interviewers asking the right questions of the team bosses and the principals? Are the graphics any good? So what if Red Bull is way out front if the coverage of the real racing further back is covered well? Thank you and please continue your lovely work.

I have to say, I agree with Chris on the M1 Procar comment too. I went to Catalunya a couple of years ago, and the support race Porsches were far more entertaining. Starter for 10 on the rear wing- Ariel Atom V8.

Even in the time of naturally aspirated Formula 1 and Ferrari still using the V12 Lombardi engine the support race with the Jaguar XJR-15s nearly eclipsed their excitement! (With eg. Tiff Needell at the wheel no less!)

@@pistonburner6448 the XJR-15 is my last tank of fuel and empty road car….. just a gorgeous machine. Even better if it was one of the 5 XJR-15 LM’s.

Light weight cars - love the idea, definitely better to drive as an enthusiast but always tend to have something that holds them back from being all time greats. Also the recent “light weighting” all just screams marketing BS. Certainly the likes of BMW with the CSL, I mean, get a grip. In this era I think car size is more important than weight due to the fact like you say they’ve cheated physics these days. The cars just don’t need to be so big. I’ve owned an original M2 which was so fun to drive, the right size for the road and just as practical as any other four seat car. I then moved into a manual 14 AM roadster. (Sick of losing money on new cars) Less practical but it’s softer down a road, everyone loves it, it’s got the look back factor, it’s also the right size for any road, it deals with speed bumps and when you get on it (at my level of ability) it’s just as agile down a road as the M2 but it’s definitely more of a momentum car because the V8 is lazy (but great sounding) in comparison to the M2 engine! It needs more thought on a track but is actually quite surprising in capability certainly to my mates and us amateurs. I think people get too tied up in thinking they’re actually able to get 8/9/10 tenths out of their cars… the reality is most are like 6 at best and so you really don’t need an GT3 or 2 RS etc. You just need a nicely sized mid powered car that’s around 1600kg or less (obvs we all want less but it’s barely possible these days) and you’ll have the best time of your life. Or enough money to own something like a Caterham and a daily. Although the big numbers of supercars is intoxicating, the 488 scrambled my brain after being used to 300-420hp cars previously 🤣🤣

964 RS. Fun but very pretty. The last tank of petrol! Yes, in what and where. And to hell with speed cameras. In an early Covette, your last tank of petrol whether you intend it or not.

5:40 YES! Been saying this for years. I'd much rather see them all in the same tin top to really see who the best is in equal machinery. Even run them on sustainable fuels to make it relevant.

There are many various single vehicle championships out there, a number of these the drivers raced in junior formula, but it’s not really equally, because each car has a separate team and engineer who can find the way to get the best out of car etc. so I don’t think you can ever equalize it enough to say who is the top definitively.

The worst factory spoiler HAS to be the Countach, which was so draggy and not aerodynamic that it made the car quite a bit slower.
