Amazingly underrated, practically unknown score... I love the movie, but this music blows the movie away. Sad, that it isn't right up there with tubular bells/the exorcist. One probably influenced the other, but I discovered them both nearly at the same time during my 80s childhood.

A criminally underrated film with an even more criminally underrated soundtrack. The haunting melody and the themes of grief, tragedy, and sorrow are expressed perfectly.

I agree completely. I have loved this soundtrack ever since I first heard it in the excellent film, over 25 years ago! This even surpasses the novel.....as enjoyable as that was. The ending is MUCH more haunting in the movie. Perhaps the most incredible thing about the film (besides the music & cinematography) is how I never realized some of the details about the plot.....UNTIL NOW! Such as how exactly Olivia 'used' Julia! Superb stuff.

I agree 100%. Every time I hear this piece of music, its like the first time! That is the sign of a beautiful & haunting work. This only got some of the attention it deserved, as did the film. I think it was a little 'ahead of its time' , theme-wise, even for the '70s. Films like THE EXORCIST had begun to emerge, so audiences went for that style of horror filmmaking. I absolutely love THE EXORCIST, but this one is in a league of its own!

Several people have commented about how haunting they find the soundtrack. I guess it's up to your expectations. I recorded the main theme on my reel-to-reel deck when it was released in -77. I loved it and tried to order the LP, but in those days it was very hard to find any info, especially from Sweden. It is only lately that I found out that it was a horror film soundtrack. All this time I had found the music extremely relaxing, with clear nature vibes. Horror? No way!

@@LeSoleilRoyalXIV You remembered a lot! :) Despite it being a while ago. Spirits are said to only have limited powers without a body or object to possess, so Olivia possessed Julia & used her for her fiendish kills. Julia was vulnerable & lived in her old house, so it made it easier to possess her. For example: Olivia also, very briefly, possessed her when she visited the mental hospital....you see Julia's eyes suddenly "turn" into Olivia's eyes......she is possessed then & Olivia's mother sees it & freaks out and has a heart attack from fright. Julia seems to have NO IDEA she is being possessed at all, not yet anyway. Then the ending scene. This is what I truly believe happened: Julia goes home & Olivia lets her see her, fully. By this time, Julia has learned all about Olivia & how evil she is. Julia has decided to 'give up'.....she is wracked with guilt & loneliness and doesn't want to live anymore. She wants her daughter Kate, but Kate has passed-on, so she decides to end it. So she picks up the sharp-edged toy....knowing full well what will happen, holds out her arms for Olivia. Olivia possesses her, cuts her throat i the same manner as Julia did when she tried to save Kate, using the toy. Julia wants to die, so she sits there until she passes away. A truly chilling ending that stays in one's mind! I hope this helps. :) Let me know if you have any other questions.

Renee, if you've read Peter Straub's eerie novel JULIA (1975), then you know it's just as sad and grim as the movie. I once heard a little line of dialogue from either some film or book or TV program (don't recall which now) that goes as follows: "Places aren't haunted...People are." I guess that sums up Full Circle (The Haunting Of Julia, 1977) in a pretty accurate way, doesn't it? Who knows---maybe it was from Peter Straub HIMSELF. I just can't remember for some reason. But Mia Farrow was excellent as this poor, grieving woman. And as you might already have read, the film is very faithful to Straub's vision of things in his novel too. Both versions of this dark story are quite spooky, even horrifying in some scenes. I can't imagine how terrible it would be to lose a child at all, let alone in such an awful manner. Mia's portrayal of the lead character truly is what I would call HAUNTED. She did a fantastic job. I recall reading the book in the late 70s or early 80s, and then seeing the film in 1985. I loved Colin's wonderful movie score so much that I made a cassette recording of the end credit music off the Cinemax Channel on TV way back then, and still have it to this very day in my nearby closet. I went for YEARS without hearing that delicate sounding little gem, but I never ever forgot just how beautiful it always was. I mostly listen to it on my cellphone and KZread app now. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING MUSIC.✌

Truthfully.......the film has a "better" ending than the novel. Don't get me wrong, I love BOTH film & novel. Both are chilling & stay with you. But the ending of the film is less......visceral than the book. I can't explain it better than that, without revealing *spoilers.* I would still recommend the book, for more details to the tale! :) Peter Straub RIP was a very good author.

A mother watches her daughter brutally choke to death, and then gets murdered by an evil entity. I guess is still an incredibly haunting and powerful story. But just feel like you can have a story that's amazing and powerful but not have to be so awful at the same time. This story is just so morbid.
