bad dreams I totally agree. I look at the fans comments and cringe at them. What the heck are they saying? The guy is trying to comment about a film or book and women are falling at his feet. Apartment Zero is his most underrated film, I think.

It was the first ever film I saw with Colin Firth which was the start of my becoming a fan and trying to get an opportunity to watch the other works he did. I consider myself lucky to have seen most of the movies and television shows he has done and my admiration for his ability to master his craft continues. Thank you Colin for being you and sharing with the world the gift that you possess!

A month in the country is the most wonderful film. Remembered it for years without seeing it and was delighted to find it recently online. Well done Colin

I fell in love with Colin Firth and his acting in 1984, he was about 24 and I saw him in "Another Country" - my love for him has never waivered - he's fantastic to watch and what a talent!

A Month In The Country is one of my favourite films. Every now and then, I feel the need to rewatch it.

A wonderful interview. Coli is an actor with extensive experience and self-distance, I am enchanted by him as a person and an actor,🥰🥰🥰❤

I read and loved J. L. Carr's book first and I still have a copy of the film. With Spanish sub titles. Your film is much valued and I have it in my archives. Such deep and thought provoking subjects . One of my favourite films of all time.

Delighted that Colin Firth has much affection for this film. It is a fabulous piece of work, which I've watched, enjoyed and cried at many times. Thanks for this interview.

Vintage films or classical films shall always be timeless and should be preserved. Hope they can restore this into a DVD and/or blu-ray version so people can watch this masterpiece film according to the description.

I decided to watch this film a few years ago, because I thought it was an adaptation of the play "A month in the country" by Ivan Turgenev (a Russian writer of the 19th century). (Interestingly, the film based on this play by Turgenev was directed in 2014 by Russian director and actress Vera Glagoleva with Ralph Fiennes in the title role. However, the film is called "Two women", not "A month in the country".) Well, I was pleasantly surprised to meet another "A month in the country". I watched the film in English, and it was correct - for example, it is impossible to translate in Russian English dialect phonetic features. The extraordinary ethnographic atmosphere, restoration work in an English church, favorite actors in their youth - all this is absolutely fascinating. Unfortunately, I've never been to England (or any English-speaking country, so please forgive my English), but after watching such films I feel a sense of closeness to this country. This is the power of art, no matter how banal it may sound. And what a pleasant impression Colin Firth's reasoning makes! It's nice to find out that one of your favorite actors is also a smart person. However, he wouldn't be so talented if he wasn't clever and intelligent. Thank you for posting the interview!

Stumbled on the book last week in Waterstones and wasn't sure if it was the same story. Very glad it was. Each in its own way a little gem. Carr's prose is a delight and it's hard to believe the film wasn't shot in a hot, dust August- the power of cinematography!

Colin Firth is so gourgeous in so many levels, his voice, his hands, his manners, his wit, his intelligence, his height, how he walks, his longs legs, his posture, his face, of course, how well spoken he is and when he smiles he enlights the room. Men like him are scarse, which is utterly sad for humanity.

I've watched my old video of this film several dozen times. It never grows old and never fails to move me. Even the country setting is brilliant in every detail. I'm grateful for it, for all who made it.

Colin A Great Person In My Heart

Just read the book after seeing the movie on Amazon. Love that time period in rural England between the World Wars. What WW1 vets did to try to fit back into soceity and , of course, unrequited love between Birken and Alice Keach.

Interior Man. I wonder if this film informed his approach to other roles. He has become a master of interpreting character in a subtle but very intense, involving and riveting way. Amazing actor.

He is so handsome, polite and i’ve been in love him since 1995.❤❤

I sent a comment on this four years ago, snd here I am again. I watched a month in the country over the weekend and it's such a lovely brilliant film. I really like the scene with Birkin smoking on the tombstone and talking to Alice Keach. I also like the scene of their final meeting in the belfry. I had the luck to have two small books accepted and I feel one of them has the same kind of feeling that comes across in the film. How I'd like to see it made in to a film.

I read most of the JL Carr books in the 80s and enjoyed them. I live in South Korea. Imaginemy surprise when I discovered the DVD of this film in the library of my provincial town about three years ago. A great film. Excellent acting, atmospheric, evocative, and I like the music which reminds me of Delius. Colin Firth is obviously a very fine actor, but seems a very unassuming man.

Excellent film AND novel

I just watched this gem of a film online last week and was completely moved by the understated power of the story. My English grandfather survived ‘The Great War’. Viewing this film I felt I was seeing him in his youth. And my grandmother, his wife, lost her first husband in the war on the Western Front. They were both deeply traumatized by the war. My mother grew up with this unspoken trauma and the residual effects were even present in my growing up as well. This film resonates with my experience of the lingering reality of major loss and trauma. So appreciative this film was found and made available again!

I admire his skillful talent and loved him in "King's Speech" which was amazing and got the video too.

I LOVED A Month in the Country- a very quiet film and very real!

Such a lovely interview. Completely adore the film and book. I still live in Radnage and grew up there. Walk to the church everyday. I also went to the same Drama School as Colin (Drama Centre London) so that means a lot too!

Thank you for share this brilliant interview about the movie. I have seen that on KZread and I like very much the story and their performance. And here Colin Firth talks about the movie in an interesting way, as usual he does in all his interviews. He is a great actor, since the beginning. Good job, thanks.

I came across the short novel by Carr in a used book section and just finished reading it. The writing is so captivating and there are so many lovely haunting passages worthy of sharing. I was so happy to find that there is a movie. I can't wait to watch it come to life with Colin Firth.

I saw this on either BBC2 or Channel 4 in the late 80s and really enjoyed it (had taped it). An adaptation has just been on Radio Four which brought it back to mind. Had no idea who Firth was, so didn't remember it was him in it - delighted it was he in it! I need to find a DVD now..

I saw A Month in the Country years ago...on youtube...with Spanish subs! I have those Spanish speaking lovers of British tv and film to thank for my discovery:) For some reason it wasn't broadcast on British tv in the years since it was released (I'd never heard of it). An absolute travesty! Thankfully it was on Film4 this year. no doubt because of the great efforts of those who got it restored in time for the centenary. I found the film deeply moving, the unspoken emotions almost visceral. And yes, as Colin points out, devoid of that awful gushing sentimentality, which I find sick-making especially in recent films to do with war ('ahem' War Horse). Glad it means so much to Colin, not least because his performance is absolutely superb. Nice one. Hopefully more people will get to watch and appreciate this subtle masterpiece:)

Thank you very much for your wonderful comment! True, this film has been lost and luckily recovered and restored and it is a must see for his fans and not only for them, it is a small gem and needs to be seen and appreciated.

I saw this film recently and strangely it just clicked with me and caught my attention which is strange for me as I can't normally watch a full film so I'm glad too see the this almost inside view

I love this film and watch it on youtube every once in a while. I saw it in a cinema with my best friend in Dublin in 1987 and I was really taken with it. It's magic. It was only in recent years that I got to see it again and something struck me. The friend I was with died in an accident since and Natasha Richardson died following an accident. It hit me how well them were and now both gone. I wondered was the scaffolding really in the church and was that a real belfry that Birkin was in. I can't help wondering what became of Alice Keach and was she still alive when he got back.

Just read the book, it's wonderfully written, great seemingly simple and heartfelt story and memorable Yorkshire atmosphere. The whole is haunting. When I saw it was a film, I assumed Kenneth Branagh played Birkin and Colin Firth was Moon. Wonder what Colin would think of reverse castng those roles in a do-over ?

It's very rarely I hear men have speaking mannerisms as Colin does. It may just be because of the area I'm in or the people I choose to see online and how small my knowledge regarding where people might develop such speaking mannerisms. So far I've seen 2 men speaking like this. Colin of course and the other is surprisingly a virtual youtuber (vtuber if you will) but he always accidentally goes on a long tangent of interest as opposed to Colin's slight restrain and keeping his sentences curt

he seems more reserved (or sombre) compared to his earlier interviews (BAFTA, Actors Studio...)
