    I agree with you! I started researching a lot in the last couple days sources like these that are the EXACT OPPOSITE of what I would be watching a week ago. The nice part about Coleman is if you see some of his other stuff he calls himself politically fluid and actually dislikes Candace Owens (who says some of the same things but is more buzzy and gets a lot of dislike from anyone on the other side). It is tough because roughly 80% of media is owned by one group with the majority owned by the other and probably 1% that tries to be unbiased. So some of those quick numbers the 80% of media throws out about large incarceration rates, more like to be pulled over (all of these are usually just comparisons of total populations) and all the rest of the ones you’ve heard don’t have any further breakdown. I mean almost 50% of the murders in the US for being only 13% of population is going to make your incarceration rate look bad. If you commit a crime (no matter how small it is or if you think it should be legal in marijuana is still illegal in certain states) in the area you live it’s still going to get you incarcerated. I don’t think a single person will deny that there aren’t racists in the US. It’s just the percentages of justified incarcerations are more than likely over 99% (leaving an error for the few very obvious misuses of power). The breakdown of the numbers are not racist when it comes to their job performance in the current day.

Harrassing and overuse of force is not something that is in the statistics. The police do not report them selves for being to harsh or for harassing the people they're dealing with. Sure these numbers are a guide line for police brutality but still this is not enough to say there are no police brutality against black people.

    @@MeanBeanComedy I've read that study before. It's very well put together and executed. I agree with you on that, and I think police reform needs to happen to make sure that cops are more responsible in how they handle stressful situations. They should have further training to deescalate tense encounters. However, you might also make mention that Fryer concludes that white people are actually more likely to be shot than black people, around 27% more likely if I'm remembering correctly. I can't remember quite what he says about the use of non deadly force among minorities, but I believe he does make mention of the higher crime rates among African Americans that likely factors into the use of non deadly force (pepper spray, batons, etc. )

    I'm not sure this is a false narrative. The argument "black people are overrepresented in shooting crimes (true)" => "they come into contact with law enforcement more often (true) so it's not surprising if they make up a good share of police shootings (ok i can see that) even when they are unnarmed (wait what)". His analysis of the statistics isn't sound IMO. That's not to mean that there is necessarily a "black shooting problem" but his arguments were not rigorous at all.

  • @BrainNeedsFood

    @BrainNeedsFood

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@helenlundeberg But... your first paragraph concedes that he has a point... As for "unarmed" - two points: firstly, a cop isn't going to know the person they are dealing with is truly unarmed for sure until they have searched them. Handguns aren't that big. Hindsight is a wonderful thing... Secondly, "unarmed" does not equal "no threat". It is possible for one human being to beat another to death with their bare hands. If someone manages to beat a cop up, they then have access to all of the weapons that cop has. No cop wants to die having been shot in the head with their own sidearm. Perhaps if there were more people out there who actually gave a shit about the lives of cops and acknowledged that a lot of their calls are actually difficult, sometimes requiring split-second, life-or-death decisions, these problems would be a little easier to understand, which is surely the first step to fixing them.

  • @helenlundeberg

    @helenlundeberg

    4 жыл бұрын

    I guess we don't have the same definition of threat relative to who has a weapon. When I said unarmed I meant to say that it's established by the cop that the person is unarmed. The threat of being beat up while you're the one holding a gun doesn't justify shooting preemptively.

  • @BrainNeedsFood

    @BrainNeedsFood

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@helenlundeberg Again, unarmed can only truly be established once a person has been searched. A handgun can be pulled out of a pocket in the blink of an eye. And again, if you have a gun, and someone beats you up, that person then has your gun. There is no guarantee it's going to stop at a beating. Do you not see the problem? A person choosing to wear a uniform does not mean they somehow have less of a right to self defence than anyone else. I'm not throwing out a blanket defence for all of the bad stories we've both heard - just trying to point out that many situations are not as easy and simple as the mainstream media would have you believe.

    300bpm my contention is that those in the black community who feel the way they do about the police’s treatment factors in more than just the number of deaths that result from police encounters. When they are overly physical and abusive of black people during policing, that adds to the black community’s perception of police, but there is no viable means to account for those instances and it wasn’t factored in this video. So if you want to call that a infallible argument so be it. Doesn’t mean it isn’t relevant because it is

    Good assessment. Drug crime though, is deeply intertwined with violent crime. You cannot have illegal drugs being sold/purchased without violence found in numerous places down the chain of transaction. So that is why drug crime needs to be taken into deep thought. I was a police officer near the border of the US and Mexico, and the stories of violent drug trade would scare you. The thought process that some have that “a little bit of meth”, or “a little bit of crack” is harmless-is just false. They don’t realize that by the time small amounts of drugs are sold to the consumer to consume, numerous violent crimes have already taken place to get it into the hands of the user.

    I would be interested in hearing him relate this to history, looking at a wider view of things. If you take a group of people, keep them from becoming educated for years, lump them in low quality housing while maintaining as many social obstacles to keep them from getting out, wouldn't this in turn fester more violent and criminal tendencies? Then willfully implement drugs just to throw things off a bit more. Is it really surprising that that group of people will become overly represented when it comes to crime? You could argue that police brutality is not a racial issue, but I think you could also argue it's aided in racist roots.

  • @TheFreaky

    @TheFreaky

    4 жыл бұрын

    I think that the past is the past and we could go ahead and analyze that but what do you want society to do for their racist past now? There is nothing that will change the past and from my point of view, RIGHT NOW TODAY, any american whichever race has freedom to do whatever they want with their lives. Main things that usually hold people back are poverty and single motherhood which is really over represented in black families. Those things sky rocketed between whites and black ever since redlining was banned in 1968 or so, so why ever since that America has been the least racist in history are black families doing worst than before? A study was also done comparing success of white vs black young man in normal neighborhoods and whites were doing a lot better. Black young women were performing at an equal rate as white women. I think the real issue black Americans are facing is single motherhood and values within their culture. Truth is a white family will face the same challenges if they are in poverty/bad neighborhood. I think people make it always about race and it is truly a problem. It mostly all starts from the house, if you grow up in a house with no father figure and all your friends are told that school isn't cool or not important then you're pretty much setup for a life of poverty. The main factor to success in a life where you have complete freedom is your family which will teach you strong values and teach you whats good and bad. Another study was done that coleman explains in another video is that you can compare Black Jamaicans who immigrate to USA and compare them to black communities and you can see they are doing a lot better then their black counterparts. Now that we isolated race, why are they doing better? Simple black jamaicans are thaught by their family to be strong working people and that it is important to work to earn your way in life. Same example can be used by asians who have the strongest values in their culture when it comes to family and success. They are doing a whole lot better than whites in general does that mean whites are being oppressed by the government because asians are richer? No not at all.

Segregation was not that long ago. Tulsa was not that long ago. I do agree that, as a mentality, one should not keep one's self a victim, but to pretend that any community would not still be affected by things of this scale doesn't make sense to me. All of those things shape a culture and create a cycle.

I speak from a place of multiple experiences. there is no accounting for the number of times I have been pulled over at random which in turn increases the chances for confrontation. There is no accurate data for that because most of the time it goes unreported. I have lived in a lower class black neighborhood middle class black neighborhood and currently a middle class white neighborhood. Ive been married to a black liberal and now a white conservative. I have 48 years of unique experiences and I can say unequivocally. The data on police misconduct where African-American is concerned wrong if not an outright lie. Loved this discussion. I have to pose this thought (and please comment if you have an answer/retort to it): I feel that the use of the statistic "more unarmed white people die at the hands of the police than black men" neither proves or disproves the notion of black bodies experiencing a disproportionate amount of police brutality. Here's my thinking.. Statistics cannot (unless explicitly measured) measure whether any of police brutality events are truly due to bad policing or racist ideology/constructs (ignorance, hate, unconscious bias, etc.). Meaning that although more white people may by die by the police, we cannot know for certain the reasons for it. And we cannot know if those deaths are equivocal to the same reasons that many believe black people die for by the police (ie. racist beliefs, profiling, etc). For instance, more white people could have died by police, but most those reasons could have been due to mistakes or bad policing, whereas (although not as often) the smaller amount of black deaths could have mostly due to racism, etc. We have to remember that there is a baseline agreement that racism is far worse than a mistake or bad skills. So to reiterate, "more white people dying by police/ less black people die by the police" still does not answer whether the police institution (which swears to serve and protect all citizens fairly) is disproportionately implementing more "brutal/racial" policing measures on black bodies. Please comment if you have anything to add or refute!

    Schehrzade Hmmm...all though Coleman refuted this next point, I still believe there is validity to it in regards to your statement: “Not assum[ing] racism as other demographics are equally-if not more likely-to be killed” by police does not give grounds that institutional racism within the police force does not exist. 70% of America’s population is white, whilst 16% is black, meaning that based on numbers, white people would likely be killed more. So numbers just being higher among white people can’t be a true indicator of racism’s prevalence. But, I see where you are coming from...

    Lee-Anne Stevenson Wow...I reeeealllly appreciated that rain/fog analogy. Yes, you and I agree that you cannot audit or interpret this data for possible racial intent, but as a black woman, with a black father, brother, and uncle, I have witnessed and know these atrocities exist within policing. So, in a way, the implications/assumptions of excessive and bad policing being racially motivated is somewhat warranted. Now, in regards to your point: “not knowing the shit a person did before the start of a video” does not negate the fact that justice should be fair and blind. You shouldn’t, have to be an upstanding citizen to receive lawful, fair policing that does not result in your death, especially when you’re unarmed. Since I hate commentary and criticisms that don’t offer solutions, I’m going to state some I think the could potentially fix this conundrum: - Fix the wealth and education gap between races. - Poverty has sequelae that eventually result in over policing. - Make policing an elite job. - Make the selection process as rigorous and elite as medicine or law. Hopefully, this weeds out some of the uneducated trash, and increases selection of open-minded, civil servants that understand the reasoning behind the current black condition. ... these are just a couple. Really enjoyed reading your point.

    When discussing harassment, you can't just focus on killing. There are many other ways police can harass citizens. Profiling is an issue, as a black man I've had police throw my DL on the ground bc I didn't have warrants or place me in handcuffs bc I fit a description (as if a teenager will rob houses in a Wendy's uniform with his name tag still on). You can say black ppl are overrepresented for crimes, but the moment you assume I'm a criminal solely based off my complexion that's wrong. I can't control what the next black man does, and that doesn't justify law enforcement for treating me like a criminal when I haven't done anything wrong. That's the issue. You can't treat ppl like criminals, then expect them to respect you

    Police are coming into contact with POOR people much more often, it just so happens that black people are more likely to live in poor areas. Thats an extremely important distinction to make

    I like this man he doesn’t go with the narrative poor Black people doing nothing wrong, and getting shot in the head by cops. He admits the high crime that Black people commit, so that’s why there’s higher blacks getting shot. But since he’s honest with the black crime problem I will believe him on the rest of the stuff there’s things we can do better training for police officers so less, Black people are getting shot. I could follow a guy like this. I can believe a man like this because he’s going by truth not this liberal leftist I’m being oppressed garbage.

    Police brutality is not racial and the data proves it. Interesting. Whenever I hear this man speak I can't help but wonder is he simply being contrary or is he indeed in search of the truth or at the least root causes. I would love to hear him in conversation with Al Sharpton or Cornell West.

    This guy is definitely smart, but I question his math/data at times. It's misleading or confusing. You usually can't talk in absolute numbers when comparing groups (of people in this case), you should use ratios. For example: www.statista.com/statistics/1123070/police-shootings-rate-ethnicity-us/

    Cops should always be receiving "training", most do get training throughout their time as Police Officers, that is what good Law Enforcement Agencies do...constantly train their people (watch how defunding Police will impact that). But there is one aspect of an Officer's interaction with the public, that even the BEST training CAN'T prepare them for; that is what YOU are going to do, as someone that they have to interact with (Cops can't read minds). I like to show the video below, and ask people who look to condemn Officer's conduct when dealing with people, and I ask them: "What would you have done differently in this situation and when would you have done it?". Then ask yourself this question, if you survived this encounter and continued to be a Police Officer, would you give the next suspect that much time? What about other Officers who might be watching this video as training; do you think they are going to hesitate the next time they are faced with this type of situation? Maybe this Officer did hesitate BECAUSE he didn't want to be one of those Cops who will get criticized or charged for being "trigger happy" and it almost cost him his life. kzread.info/dash/bejne/aYWllcaRlt3clNo.html
