I've got a 2/71 639 made at their long closed Toronto factory. Awesome lanterns, they burn bright and strong. The Canadian factory actually came up with these, they weren't made in the States til the 90s.

Interesting info….I just bought one made in Canada. 73 model. Very clean in original box & spanner + alcohol bottle. Everyone says the Canadian made are best. I have nothing to compare it with.

That smoke might be kerosene vapor and could be an indication that the lantern could be started at that time. Of course, opening it too early results in liquid kerosene making a mess inside the lantern, so that is ill-advised. Note that this lantern can run at remarkably low settings without flashing back. I have seen it in operation at such really low levels, where only the tip of the mantle produces any meaningful glow.

Its nice to see that the mantle shortens up once the kerosene vapor ignites inside. After I pre-burned my mantle, it is still long almost touching the fill cup. Once I use it for the first time, it'll be nice to see that long mantle form a rounder shorter state.

Make sure always to store a gas container near a burning lantern.

The 635 was the naphtha version. Again, 639 and 635 were Canada exclusives, 639B and C were USA made. The 635 and 639 were the successors to the 236 and 237, respectively.

I guess its a good thing that it uses a more readily available fuel. But the noise and the way it lights, lack of adjustment. Yeah it makes sense how naphtha pressure lanterns are more popular. When it comes to kero i will stick to cold blast lanterns

You could use white gas in this lantern. The only downside would be slightly less light output, but then you would have a lantern that can easily use kerosene.

How NOT to light a lantern. You have bedding hanging over it right above it. You didn't prep your mantel. You have a gallon of fuel setting right behind the lantern. the 639c is kerosene so it is all on or all off, there is no brightness adjustment using the #11 mantel. you turn it on and go full boogie, you don't turn the gas knob back and forth. Glad you didn't burn your garage down. If you want to control the brightness on that lantern use a #21 mantel.

  • @themaritimegirl

How does the mantle make a lick of difference in the adjustability? The only difference between the #11 and #21 is the size. Theoretically, the #11 should ensure better adjustability because its larger size means it's transferring more heat to the generator.

It says it comes in original packaging, packaging will be damaged. Lots of times these are unopened, and there is no damage to the contents. You just never know. Anyways it cost me Subtotal:$62.97, Shipping & Handling:$0.00 Total before tax:$62.97 Estimated tax to be collected:$4.72 Rewards Points:-$30.18 Grand Total:$37.51, and I can send it back if it's too bad.

just some advice.... Coleman Fuel is also known as white gas... White gas is actually distilled Gasoline, It can be ignited from several feet away... I noticed you have a can of Coleman Fuel next to your Kerosene Lantern. Sometimes those cans can leak fumes. depending on how well they are sealed shut. I would never have a can of coleman fuel near any kind of heat source or flame. If the fumes should leak it could explode. the fuel is very volatile..... Just an FYI

Kerosene is a thicker, oily fuel when compared to white gas. White gas is very light, highly refined natural gasoline fuel. Kerosene takes a lot of heat from the lighted mantle to properly vaporize, so you just can't burn the lanterns at any lower settings than a certain minimum setting. White gas can easily burn a lot lower because it vaporizes much easier.

It does adjust. That said, he is worried that the lantern will produce adverse behaviors if he adjusts it too far, and adjustment is a bit difficult.

Also, this is pretty much built exactly the same as the old one, with the stamped frame and all. Other than that, the old ones had the classic style fuel valve with the cleaning lever, and they originally came with a red letter Made in England globe.

Thanks for the reply, I just bought a 639c and the mantles blew out on me during first light. I will have to try the peerless I guess. I was pretty disappointed with the quality of this lantern, especially the bail I don't trust it, it feels like it's going to pop out. Your thoughts? BTW great video, and I really appreciate you sharing it!

  • @ctuan13

Well the bail is spring steel so as long as it's bent in such a way that when it's removed the ends overlap, it will be plenty stuck in to avoid detaching. But the old mantra is true, they don't make em like they used to.

@@ctuan13Beware that the Peerless mantles are often inferior in practice because they have shrinkage issues (not small enough) leading to dimmer light. I have seen the effects of this in person.
