Thank you for your comments. I have to be very patient with myself with cold wax as it is not my primary medium. But I remember when I switched from oil paint to acrylic 22 years ago, that too was a tough transition. Good things come to those who wait. Just keep up the practice!

thanks a lot Diane for sharing wonderful information..I wanted to know that can we mix acrylics with cold wax medium?

Thank you for watching. You cannot mix acrylics with cold wax medium. You can go over a dry acrylic painting with oil and cold wax. However you cannot go over an oil and cold wax painting with acrylic. Remember mixing salad dressing...oil always rises to the top.

No. But there are heavy clear acrylic gel mediums that you mix with your acrylic paints in order to get a similar result. Make sure that you select high quality acrylic paints that have a high pigment content. Since the acrylic gel mediums are not wax - you cannot really scrape back to reveal underlying shapes and colors but you are able to wet sand back areas to basically accomplish the same effect. Have fun & experiment.

Sanding is a gtrat way to reveal the layers below. I invested in a FessTool evac sander to keep it safe- especially when sanding into toxic colors like cadmiums. Don't sand the life out of the painting however. And go back into the painting to strengthen areas that were dulled out by sanding. Sanding is a subtractive prrocess and painting is an additive process. I don't even give my students a sander anymore because they tend to sand the life out of their work.

@@ianistudio I believe that the majority of Acrylic pigments are "Hue" designated. So (for example) a Cadmium Red Hue would not contain any actual Cadmium. Of course it's not a great idea to breathe anything in but air. 😆 Wet sanding pretty much prevents any particulate matter from going airborne. And then any dried residue can be gotten rid of outdoors. Stay Safe.

Can you also use gold wax together with acrylic?

You can wait until the acrylic dries and go over the acrylic with cold wax. But not the other way around. Oil over water based, not water based over oil
