The little 3 inch model is more of a tactical blade than what meets the eye. With simple but effective training you can be as deadly with a short blade as with a larger and longer one.

I've carried the hold out 3 for 8 months now. It's so light. Really good edc but last week prove how grippy the g 10 is. Was jogging it's the wife. Wearing light weight swear pants. Had the hold out 2 in a pocket when a loose pit bull mix attacked at the park jogging track. 3" blade was enough to break the dogs bite. Didn't slip even with blood g-10!had enough traction without finger guard

I still don't know how I feel about this series. They would make more sense to me as a fixed blade, I think. The big thing I don't jive well with is the fact that it doesn't have just a little indent for the finger to protect you while stabbing. I like their concealability though, so I might consider the midsize to go somewhere I wouldn't ordinarily have something stabby.

Great review, I love this knife. It's what I like to call, my EDT (Every Day Tactical). I did a review of it a little while back. Very underrated. The G-10 is thick enough to file down finger grooves, if you want to customize a greater grip. I've found it eased the opening of the blade, too. Made a wave for it, as well (more detail on that if you check out Cold Steel's forum). I'm glad you reviewed this one, will definitely popularize this great knife in many's EDT.

EXCELLENT response and you are correct. There is consistency in the reviews here for many years but I always have the freedom to like or dislike whatever knife or gear item based on the logic presented in the video. Some guys think I should march lock step to a certain formulation that pleases them and I just can't guarantee that. Also I find it odd that "long time follower" Bubblewhip341 has an Unavailable Channel...hmmm.

I have the 6" plain edge, and have just ordered the 4" serrated. They're extremely good knives albeit the 6" is too large to take out and use in public. I get more use out of my Tuff-Lite. That too is an incredibly good knife if what you want is a tool rather than a potential weapon.

Hey Nutn, You Rock!!!! I picked up an old CS Culloden boot knife and honestly, it sucks, in the first type of cool that is. Second type of cool is dripping off the knife, I found it in a pawn shop for $50 with some lite surface staining (Carbon V). Anyway, the hold out looks to be less traditional, but better engineered for tactical use and REALLY improved for EDC tasks, esp with that wide blade config. I was just watching my fav gear reviewer before I go to the local Highland Games! You Rock!!

Being of Scottish descent, I now, out of cultural principle, carry one of these as an EDC. Thing is, the knife is so light, unobtrusive and useful that dust is gathering on all my other knives! They do need a couple of weeks to be 'worked-in' to get the slickest deployment and one-handed closure. Best thing anyone can do is get themselves the 3" version, fall in love with it's lines, it's feel and it's practicality, then buy the 4" or 6", just for hell of it. Believe me, you will...

I think the point of the intro was to mention that few if no other companies put huge martial folding blades into full production. It only made sense to use other Cold Steel blades because only those line-ups could stack up for all the different models. The Endura may compare to the midsize Hold-out 2 but what about 1 or 3? It would have taken forever to do a full line-up of knife comparisons for all 3 models.

I owned the 3 for a while, just couldn't get used to the stiffness of the lock. coupled with a shorter blade, it was tough to deploy. would love to try one of the larger ones, especially with the steel upgrade.

We remember that in the East the martial arts leaders are also part of the spiritual leadership of the local people. Thus, their neighborhood (of the culture I was in contact with) had a sword/spear home defense system. These people would practice, like, everyday or something in morning, as they do now. Also, when I said the naginata was large, he said it was for home pest control or something like that.

I myself have the smallest ones of these knives as a in the car edc type of knife and im really happy about it, the only bad thing i have to say is that the screws holding the pocket clip on will get loose, or atleast for me they did. Glue em in if your afraid to loose them:) My preffered cold steel blate at the moment has to be the ak 47 series, havent tryed the new one but the old steel handle one is my most used knife, and most durable. ( had to modify the plastic impakt part tho:) )

  • @wcropp1

Agreed--teflon comes off too easily, and bead blasting leads to rust. Satin/stonewash is the way to go. A coated/black offering makes sense for military personnel, etc., but make it something that won't come off so easily--DLC, powder coat, cerakote, etc. This will probably increase cost, but it's worth it IMO.

So glad to see you do a revue of the Holdout series... Ive had my HO2 since last summer and ive sung its praises to anyone who would listen.... IMO the 4in version is a competitor to the Spyderco Military for those on a budget... Millie uses better steel however Holdout has way stronger Triad Lockup.... In the end its all about the Triad Lock and i continue to stand by my argument that the large 5.5" blade G10 Espada is superior to any Emerson offering when it comes to a "Combat Folder".

Although I usually prefer a physical stop on my tactical blades (especially pierce cutters) such as a large finger choil or thumb ramp, like on the AK, espada, Recon, etc... to keep your hand from slipping forward on the blade, but not in this "hideout" knife pou. The more streamlined shape makes a much less wide profile for better carry and drawing less attention. Just order the 6" and already have plans of sanding down the handles to get even slimmer and re-tractioning with the dremel.

Actually the review makes the case pretty good: a 7 ounce knife with a very strong lock and 6" blade. The largest Hold Out blows away those competitive offerings you mention on that criteria as a pure defensive blade. I didn't show others b. CS hasn't had a review here in awhile. You are correct in that they lack the much needed jimping, guards but it is very aggressive G10. As usual the tale of the tapes is reflected in my likability scale in sidebar. But I stand by the review.

The large would be pretty awesome as a spear head... lash it to a nice staff through those holes in the handle. I like the looks of it. I would have liked to have seen you put the large blade in your pocket and see how it looked, also, how does it feel in pocket? Can't be worse than my left pocket which has a ginormous smartphone in it.
