I've been backpackin and bushwackin with that very cold steel Gladius for 3 yrs now. All the black finish has come off but she's still rippin and roarin. Good purchase especially for the 45 bucks I spent on it

Well the one on the left is made to be a tool the one on the right is made to be a weapon

The U.C. has the wasp blade beautiful shape with the pommel. Great but the cold steel is a superior tool in my opinion

I mean one is basically a modern representation of the Roman Gladius which was a combat only weapon always to be used in tandem with a tower sheild often with others along with you, the handle forces a hammer grip resulting in stabs being upwards instead of forwards, additionally its bot a slashing weapon clear by the blade shape, where the hilt on the left one doesnt force your hand has a much better grip for swinging and that swept point adds some weight into the blade that the other doesnt, long story short they're not comparable as one is made as a tool and the other is made as a weapon

@@Sip_Dhit The Romans mostly do stabbing attack with their Gladius swords, since the swords have a short range. Their main is a throwing spear called; a Pilum(pronounced Pila) and the Gladius is the close range secondary. they also carry a lightweight tower shield for defense.

the Romans made them for a thousand years and barely changed the design.... its the perfect urban weapon for close quarters

So at least their both Carbon BUT the United is a hollow grind meaning it will cut easier, but more likely to break off the tip or roll an edge. Cold steel wins in this case IMO

United Cutlery takes the W imo because it’s never broken and imo shouldn’t be used for anything too heavy duty.

CS torture tests always beat competition...they freaking stand on those hilts and blades

If you were about twenty IQ you could understand which is which, easily. Cold steel is the one with the ball on the pommel. United cutlery is the one with the window breaker spike on the pommel.

I've had the Cold Steel Gladius for 3 years and it is TOUGH. Great blade that can take all the abuse you desire. Sharpens up nicely as well

Saw a guy in the riots get his ass beat damn near to death while wielding the cold steel Gladius. I'd highly reccomend using it if you ever actually wield one. Works out better I'd immagine.

The cold steel Gladius machete sounded like the real deal while the combat commander sounded like a flimsy toy 🤣🤣

Have no clue what these are are why I'm here but its nice to see what I should get looking at the comments

Cold Steel knives are so worth the money. I have a Kopis, and I abused the hell out of it. Still straight and easily sharpened .

The one on the left is better due to the blade design and grip...as a paramedic I look at the potential stab wound not the brand

Cold steel looks higher quality to me without any actual research. I can already see the blade go all the way through the handle.

Both are full tang, I didn't like the big hole in the combat commander. Weak point.

Based on noise alone the one on the right sounds more heavy duty. And i like that in a chopper.

Bought one of each, United Cutlery really does the trick better then cold steel imo, very good balance and is more durable.

The cold steel gladius will last you YEARS decades even I bought mine for 28 dollars 8 years ago and it still is beyond sharp and I’ve cut down who knows how many small trees and cut into logs and used it to pry open things and it never lost its edge and will always be my favorite blade

I got my srk 20 yrs ago.... my camp knife.... still razor sharp... and i ABUSE it

I like the grip more on the right but I like the blade more on the left

My United cutlery’s tip broke off when I tried to pull out of someone wood I was chopping with it. My cold steel is still okay as of today

Honestly they look like cheap, mass produced Chinese-esque renditions of a gladius, but they’re pointy pieces of carbon steel so I’m sure they work fine.

I dont get the point of blades like these. Ive used cold steel machetes, theyre ok but they dont hold up. My great grandpa forged mine from a chevy leaf spring, and i still use it every time i go out into the brush. Works better than any cold steel ive ever used

@36reapergrim usually handle issues and edge retention, im usually dealing with pretty gnarly palmettos and stuff and the edges just fold and chip more than most other knives i have

I have owned both. For some reason, this rivalry has been going on for years. And still, the cold steel is the best. Hands down. The Handle of the Commander has no weight and is completely unwieldy. Cannot absorb impact, follow through is a fight to not let the blade rotate out of hand.

I get it, you got TWO swords.

In my opinion the UC is much better, and I love Cold Steel products except they missed with this one

I have a Cold Steel Gladius machete and I have downed many saplings and chopped many branches to make room for us to play airsoft. Like all my other CS stuff, it performs flawlessly and I use it a lot. It lives in my trunk in case I need it. They stand behind their equipment. Long-time fan. I highly recommend it.

I've had the CS one for about 2 years, I have beaten the hell out of it, still comes back for more. Best 15 bucks I've spent.

I got a Cold Steel Kukri for Christmas and holy geez is it the bee’s knees

For anyone saying cold steel I have actually owned that gladius and I have big hands and the pommel irritates the hell outta my wrist and hand its constantly rubbing against it and after like 20 swings I usually put it away. Also this may be cause I abused it when I got it but the tip bends super fast but take that at a grain of salt I did stab a piece of pork meat and it hit bone

The UC doesn't have that problem, can spin it around easily. But you'll be able to sand down your pommel quite without much effort, but how would it affect the balance?

Cold Steel! I prefer their tanto shape, I've got 6 different Cold Steel Tantos. Kobum all the way up to the Master Tanto!

No alot of high quality weapons make that sound, recall alot of weapons have different designs even simple things like axes and knives are different? A tool axe is wider a weapon axe is thinner, a knife is the same way i feel that comparing what is a modified tool design on the left to the practically unchanged weapon design on the right doesnt make much sense

Look up 21' rule.

United Cutlery has an accurate shaped blade compared to Cold Steel's blade.

I have the cold steel and it has gone through everything I've tried to cut only sharpening it twice in 8 years. I ended up getting almost all of their other versions of machetes because of it. Fantastic quality 👍

Cold Steel's take on the gladius is way better than United Cutlery's gladius. Although the UC one has a cool design, the blade will most likely snap or become unusable after long repeated use, unlike the CS one. With tools or blades, functionality and durability comes before making it pretty. And even then, they're getting beat the hell up in the end. Don't waste your money folks 👍

I have that exact cold steel blade. Good quality for the price, fits well in the hand. I do like the other though, im gonna look into that one.

paul ballard I like cold steel its bigger in size even if others don't like the fit and finish. As a tool it seems more useful. The UC is nicer looking and feels good in the hand. but I wont own it. plus its shorter. as far as best? Its a personal opinion. you choose.

That's the United Cutlery one.

In short combat Commander has a thinner blade stock but a sharper edge out of the box and a cooler looking handle with less hot spots but overall the gladius from Cold steel is better made thicker blade stock better balance and a bigger handle but there are some hot spots especially if you have larger hands

I'll be perfect honest. Its a good bush knife. You can hack that thing half to death and it'll chop what you need it to chop. But it'd break against another sword or a shield. Not that many people are getting into random street swordfights these days...

First thing is these are defined as machetes not swords. You can them buy at academy sporting goods or online anywhere from about 20 to 30$ they are considered to be work tools. But they would serve a purpose in the zombie apocalypse or in self defense.

Ever heard of the company called “Zombie Tools”? They use 5160 Spring steel to make their old fashioned ancient weapons. I’m talking knives, axes, swords, cleavers etc etc. just check their .com and see for yourself.

Is this what you eat your dinner with? I can respect a man who would. I personally like to use an odachi but each to their own. Roman weaponry is incredibly effective and extremely lethal when used by the right man whilst cutting up his chicken or carrots. I usually prepare my veg with a great Scottish claymore.

Cold Steel is hands down better and tougher but the United Cutlery version is pretty good alternative and alternative are important.

Been debating between the two for a little bit now but i think this video put to rest which of the two i should go for - the Cold Steel based off of the sound alone gives off the impression that it is far more durable than the United Cuterly. However, one thing I noticed that was absent in the comments below in discussion between the two is the CS handle, the metal runs all the way through while the UC version, it stops above the hole. I've seen photos of the UC hilt bent at that O. However, I do think that the UC looks a lot nicer but you do need to have some weight to the weapon and at 0.6g it just doesnt seem like enough for either protecting yourself or doing outdoors yard work.

@@shawnctx thanks for the reply, now im torn between the cold steel gladius and the Cold Steel 97TKMS Tactical Katana Machete (was looking this morning) - similiar price points with the gladius being 10 bucks cheaper but the machete has that extra range and intimidation factor. Decisions decisions lol.

also the 420 steel of the Reaper would be a downgrade in quality - at least that's how im looking at it.

I have both and the cold steel is well tested. Took a 9mm no problem and like the top comment the black finish came off but its still going strong. Didn't like the handle though and made it thicker with an old belt
